Yet another reason why we need universal health care: Kathy Myers was playing with her dogs at her home in Niles, Michigan when her 80-pound lab yanked on his leash, ripping her rotator cuff. It's a nasty injury that causes damn near unbearable pain...

But she couldn't afford to see a doctor. She was recently laid off from her job at a hazardous waste removal company, and was now among the 1.2 million people in Michigan without health coverage.

She endured the injury for a month. But when she couldn't go on, she decided scam her way into getting medical care. Knowing that emergency rooms can't refuse patients, she placed ice packs and pillows around her neck and head, then shot herself in her injured shoulder.

Alas, it wasn't the best plan. While emergency rooms will treat gunshot wounds, they're not equipped to handle rotator cuff surgery. That's a scheduled operation. So the doctor merely gave her anti-inflammatories and sent her home.

Now she still suffers excruciating pain, and still has no health care. She's hoping to find a doctor who will take a payment plan.

In the meantime, she may also face charges of firing a gun within city limits. But since this is Michigan, where people have an intimate understanding of hardship, we're guessing police and prosecutors will find a way to make this disappear.
