Mexican Smugglers Threaten Off-Duty Nogales Cops Who Made 400-Pound Weed Bust

We're not fans of Arizona's new immigration law, since it's an open invitation to racial profiling. But you can understand why residents are so worried -- and pissed -- about violence spreading across the Mexican border...

Earlier this month, two off-duty cops from the border town of Nogales were out horseback riding in the desert. The armed officers came across smugglers from Mexico and stopped them.

The bad guys abandoned their truck -- with 400 pounds of weed in it -- and took off on foot back over the border. The cops guarded the truck until backup arrived.

It would seem to be just another day in the life of an Arizona lawman, except this case turned out different. Informants told police that the smugglers were pretty pissed about losing their abandoned load. And they were threatening retaliation against the two cops in question.

The city's police chief is taking the threats seriously, since the informant was able to provide the specific names of the cops involved in the bust.

Nogales hasn't seen the violence that other border towns have witnessed, and the chief says this is the first threat against one of his officers. But the Border Patrol has moved extra agents to where the bust was made, and the chief is telling his officers to stay armed at all times, avoid that part of the desert, and remain in constant communication.
