Afshan Azad had never acted before, but she went to the Harry Potter auditions on a lark with her friends because she thought it would be fun. She ended up in four Potter films playing the role of Padma Patil, a classmate of Harry. But her good fortune doesn't extend to her family...

It seems that if Afshan won't date a nice Muslim guy, her dad and her brother would prefer her dead

Like most 22-year-olds, she's not particular concerned about dating across religious lines. So she took up with a Hindu guy. This did not please her Muslim family.

Her dad and brother ordered her to stop seeing the man. She refused. That's when police say say Afshan was beaten by her brother Ashraf, 28, at their Manchester, England home.

They also say Ashraf and the kids' father, 54-year-old Abdul, threatened to kill her for her dating transgressions. If she won't date a nice Muslim guy, it seems, they'd prefer to see her dead.

Both have been charged with threatening to kill Afshan, and Ashraf face additional charges of assault. They currently out on bail, but they've been banned from traveling to London, where Afshan is staying with friends.

Alright. The main point of this article is that honour killings... as one is suspected to have just happened in my country... being a small country not Britain or england... is not acceptable any where by any race or religion. Thankyou @ XenophobeAlert. I'm glad that I've roughly got my point across. A key lesson in life is to willing to be able to hear people out and trying to understand where they are coming from no matter how alien they are to you. That is why we are born with two ears and one mouth- so that we listen twice the amount we speak.

So getting to the point. It's actually not permissable for a Muslim man to marry a non-Muslim woman unless she is one of the the 'People of the book'. Please look this up...this means either christians or Jews. The reason why Muslim women are not allowed to marry non-Muslim is because her husband might not let her practise her religion.If you think practically their will be clashes on their belief of God .Christians believe in trinity and Jesus being the sin of God while Muslims believe that he is a Prophet and being a Muslim means submitting to the fact that there is only one God . Also think about it..what religion will the children be...the girls Muslim and the boys christian or vice versa. Hi I'm a muslim girl living in a western society. To be honest it's the hardest thing ever. Maybe it's a bit easier to be a British Muslim than living in America. I was born in Britain and I Brtain is my home. when I get comfortable being a normal teenager...my bubble bursts.Something bad happens...muslims. Like every other person out there and on this page...i'm outraged, upset, and shaken. But I still feel more upset than all of the others on this page...I still have to face more...the constant taunting...mockery...swearing abuse...and things such as:GO BACK HOME. It's like everything scatters...so who am I again? Where do I belong? Ok, a whole whopping two subsets of Muslim populations, easily in the minority, have male veils. The vast, vast majority of Muslim women are who wear veils and in some Islamic regimes are beaten if they appear in public without them on. I doubt the men wearing male veils would suffer the same approbation. What exactly is the point you are trying to make? That because a few men wear a veil, suddenly all the oppression Muslim women endure is not all that?
actually alexa, you forget the Berber, mainly the Tuaregs of that group. . the males start about when they are in their teens. and by the time they are adults. they have been wearing it for years. they are dyed normally with indigo. and it gets into their skin at times. . it as I said. the women who tend to go barefaced and or bareheaded if they wish to.
@Sangelia, the vast, vast majority of Muslims wearing veils are women. There is only one group of tribesmen who wear a male veil, called a Cheche to ward off evil spirits and it comes in awful handy when committing beheadings anonymously.

I know this may not be the proper place for this, but i couldn't find anything else to post it to. As someone who has lost a brother in 9/11 in the trade center, i'm very upset at what is going on in NYC right now. and wonder what others think as well. they are building a Muslim Mosque 600 feet from Ground Zero and are planning on opening it up on 9/11/2010. How can anyone be so unkind or cruel to do something like this? This is a slap in the face of every person who lost their lives on 9/11/2001, not to mention a slap in the face of family and friends of those people. I don't understand why the polictico in NYC would see this as "good". To me it is a dishonor to all of our lost people. and a dishonor to our firefighters and medical people and the cops that lost good people as well. there is to be a rally of protest at Ground Zero on 9/10. I have not decided if i'm going or not. This is so not right no matter what anyone says. the Mosque can be built elsewhere. Why build it near where Muslims killed 1000's of innocent people? Far and away, Islam is suffering an inordinately high number of fundamentalist fanatical violent practitioners and has been increasingly so since Abu Nidal and before. If Muslims as a single voice would denounce the terrorists who claim their religion as justification, and would help the world find and prosecute them rather than hiding them, then what you have said would become moot.

Sangelia, can you post any other christian religions besides Muslim and various Eastern religions that have Honor killings that are practiced in the year 2010? We all know there is domestic abuse in all walks of life. From religious homes to Atheists homes That's why it's called domestic violence. @alexa kim it isnt just Muslim males that kill their womenfolk. there are males of all religions, including Christianity that do it too. with out us realizing it. everyone of us knows at least one gal who is abused by either her birth family, friend, and or mate. if not more gals. bet a good portion of those women who are murdered by their husbands. the ones that get on here, are church going Chrisitans. the ones not reported as being Muslim.... A faster, but more difficult way to disabuse Muslim men of mistreating their women and girls is for Muslim women (in Iran, etc.) to hook arms and refuse to live with their husbands until their husbands make the political changes to secure their equal protection. That would, sadly, cost many women their lives. But even Muslim men would find the death toll too horrific to bear at some point. Muslim women hope that women of their new countries will help them escape the sheer oppression of their fundamentalist Muslim men and to live a life free of free of dying. There is a personal security expert by the name of Gavin DeBecker who wrote a wonderful book every woman should own: "The Gift of Fear." In it he wrote that whenever he would ask men what they were most afraid of from women, they answered of being laughed at. When women were asked what they most feared of men, they answered being killed. And that was asked in America. We can only imagine what the terror is for Muslim women who dare to dream of realizing their individual rights.
I appreciate those of you that know how offense the word cunt is to women. Back to the issue at hand. This beautiful young women was abused in the name of religion and it goes on everyday. No, we can't stop the violence everywhere in the world, but there is no way anyone of us have to put up with it here in the US. The Muslim people do and will continue to practice their barbaric treatment of women as long as Countries like the US closes a blind eye. Even if just one female that is murdered is one two many. I have to add that for the most part I have been a bit quiet on here lately because it seems that no one can say a freaking word without being called a dickhead, stupid or whatever. Anyone in general: I'm actually thinking it's really silly that we all have to preface our opinions with explanations about how we're not trying to offend anyone just because our opinions are different and we disagree with each other. I really think that we, as adults, should be able to disagree with each other- even strongly disagree- without being offensive or having people take offense to us. If someone is being offensive to you it is because they are trying to get under your skin. So don't let 'em. Now about how Muslims & how they treat women: In college, before I decided what my passion was, I took A LOT of womens studies classes. I thought I'd minor in it, at the time. Womens studies classes cover religion, other countries, cultures, and practices. And I grew up with plenty of Muslims who weren't on some lifetime plan to deceive their friends from the days they first started playing kick-ball together. I know the good and the bad, so yeah, I think I can deliver an informed opinion on the subject. Don't expect you to agree or disagree. I'm just putting my thoughts out there. yeah i guess it is "just a word". use to work with a guy named Dick Dickerson! some of the jokes that were passed around were pretty funny. (best one: you got a pencil D***?) yeah me to CCCCC. But it still offends me. it's a really nasty word and i can't understand the use of it. it's sooooo degrading. It's up there in my list of NO NO words. Which are racist words. I like thrift stores. I'm not really picky, but i can find some good buys on jeans and tops. and with kids who outgrown shoes every 3 months, it's a god send. We have 3. Goodwill, Salvation Army and Savers. They all support the community. Savers is ran by Big Brothers/Big Sisters. I donate a lot to them monthly. so i get 20% off monthly shoping there. My daughter and her husband have a hard enought time paying bills and uniforms for school then buying shoes and under clothes and socks all the time. so i help as much as i can. My son is a little different, and i refuse to go to Old Navy or Target for those boys. so i give money to daughter in law, and she addes whatever to what i give her and she does the shopping.
Alexa, I wear sneakers and sandals in summer and fake fur clogs in winter. I do have a pair of winter boots for snowy days. But that's it. I think i have 3 or 4 pairs of different colored heels for work but that's it. I have to dress professional at work. so when i get home, i laze about. Use to have a fondness for shoes, but got out of that years ago. I go for comfort not pain. Age has a way of sneaking up on you. Even thought i'm NOT that old! lol As for kids working... ha ha not if all the rest of the jobs in Ma go to other countries!! College is expensive and i'm not sure if any of them will actually want to go. And there isn't enought in them except about half year worth. Put a little in them weekly. still got at least 5 or 6 years for the 1st ones to decide to go or not. And then once they are in, i will then divvy up my weekly deposit between those not in yet and then so on. The youngest is now going on 20 months. So figure by time he gets there college will be a 1/4 million! so it isn't a lot, but every little bit counts. so yes, I"M CHEEP!!!!

Hopefully with all of the money that the Harry Potter movies made, she has enough saved up to stay away from her crazy family. Islam needs some growing pains that do not further subjugate and discount women, trash gays and demonize non-Muslims, particularly Jews. CCCCC-- Same here (i fixed the washer to keep from having to buy a new one!!!! and it's 19 yrs old!) But the makeup is for special occasions or if i'm going somewhere special. And i have no girlie stuff that i'm fond of. Very down to earth and prefer capris and tanks to dresses. And if i pay over $15 bucks for shoes or boots it might send me to the hospital!!!! I also think it's really silly for feminists to forget that some Muslim women WANT to fully participate in what we westerners view as barbaric aspects of SOME Muslim ideals. If a woman really does want to cover any part of her body for religious purposes, it is her prerogative to practice her religious views as she sees fit. That is NOT to say that women, oppressed against their will, should not be fully defended- because they should be. But women never helped other women by telling them what they should or should not do (for example, "you shouldn't wear a chador").

Well, i came back to comment on this story because if i remember correctly, this wasn't the 1st time this had happened to this actress. I vagely remember a report back in the beginning of HP, she was seen and photographed at gala with a american and then it came out a few weeks later the father and brother beat her up then. or maybe another Indian girl from the movie. Either way, i just remembered it and when i came to comment that i remembered, i saw the comment from Randy Fold which included me in his rant. Not cool. So everyone i got my "goat up". Our schools are now made to offer these languages as 1st and English as a 2nd. our children can't learn French, italian, irish or Spanish anymore. Even thought we have double digits of Hispanics as well. Anyways. We should help our own nation and not open our arms and let anyone come in and our government gives them everything. But then we have New Oleans distroyed and we can't even help these people. But we will have people come here and we give them aid, housing, food stamps and medical. And then if they play nice enough they give them money to start a business and buy homes. anyways. Sorry again to branching out.
