The two children left behind were Alberto's adopted niece and nephew, and both showed signs of abuse. Three-year-old Serenity Julia Gandara exhibited obvious signs of trauma, according to police. But they have yet to reveal a manner of death.
Her 4-year-old brother was found sleeping in a bedroom. He too showed signs of physical abuse, but he's apparently okay. The couple also left behind six dogs and a cat.
Police discovered the kids after Carla called her sister Sunday, telling her to go to the Garcia home. But detectives believe the family was already in Mexico at the time of the call. They're thought to be traveling in a 2007 white Ford Expedition. At the time of their disappearance, Carla ran a house cleaning business and Alberto was an unemployed mechanic.
Now police are worried that they might harm the three kids they took with them. 5-year-old Crystal Garcia and 4-year-old Alberto Jr. are both from the couple's marriage. 10-year-old Carlos Sobalvarro Jr. is Carla's son from a previous marriage. And that has Carlos Sobalvarro Sr. very worried.
Sobalvarro claims Alberto Garcia is an abusive man who likes to pick on those smaller than him. He adds that both Garcias have hot tempers, which may have prompted the abuse.
Before the couple fled, Sobalvarro says he argued with Alberto Garcia over the $1,200 a month he owed in court-ordered child support. He'd told Alberto he couldn't afford that much. But he says Carla later threatened him, saying that Alberto was fully capable of killing Sobalvarro.
