A personnel carrier of the British Royal Marines was blown up by an IED in Afghanistan in 2008. Marine Rob Deering rushed to help. But just then a second bomb blew up, killing Deering and those who were running to offer assistance...

For his heroism, Rob was awarded four medals, which is sister Elaine inherited when he left all his possessions to her in his will.

But Elaine, a single, 37-year-old mother, didn't treat the medals with much sentimental value. She had placed some stuffed birds up for sale on eBay. She was hoping to earn enough to take a cruise of the Mediterranean. When collector John Langley showed up to buy them, Elaine and her mother offered to sell Langley Rob's medals, uniform and a memorial shell casing given to them by the military.

In collectors' circles, it was a handsome score, says Langley, since it's rare to come across a complete collection of a recently killed soldier's personal items.

Langley bought the stuff and was soon offered a 400 percent profit to resell them to another  collector. But that's when Langley's guilt kicked in. It seems he finally realized that these aren't the things that should be traded for cruises and profit.

After two weeks of not sleeping, he decided to track down Rob Deering's former fiancee, Gemma Polino, and give the medals to her for free. Deering and Polino had planned to get married after Rob returned from Afghanistan last year. (Special thanks to Mesa Bureau Chief Joe for the tip.)
