Last September, police were called to his home after he threatened to kill his wife, former Dane County Supervisor Dorothy Wheeler. He was planning on a murder-suicide, but he never pulled it off.
By February, Dorothy had filed for divorce. The couple separated, and Dorothy took up with another man from Montana -- or at least that's what Jansson believed.
So when he got the bright idea to blow the man up. Surely his wife would finally see that he was the superior catch when compared to an exploded guy.
With the help of his assisted living aide, Jansson assumed the identity of "Harold Smith," got himself a fake Craigslist account, and posted an ad seeking "a mechanic or technician to construct an anti-personnel explosive device (AEPD)." The bomb, Jansson specified, should be disguised as a tool or tackle box, filled with nuts and bolts for shrapnel, and rigged to go off as soon as it was opened. He was willing to pay $500 for the little gift he planned to mail his wife's beau in Montana.
But he was foiled by his assisted living aide, who turned out to be a traitor. As soon as she left his house, she called police. Unbeknownst to Jansson, the first person to respond to the ad was an undercover cop.
When they delivered a fake bomb, Jansson, who's blind and wheelchair bound, greeted them wearing latex gloves. He was promptly arrested.
He's now been charged with attempting to possess explosives, and will soon be hit with additional charges of attempted homicide.
