Using the compelling scent of a pot roast to lure them, he decided to go psycho on the felines. A mother cat was found shot to death with five wounds from a pellet gun in the face. Three others were found bludgeoned to death. Another two were also injured, one of which had to have its paw amputated.
And to top it all off, seven kittens had to be euthanized because their mother was killed and they could not longer be fed.
Neighbor Peggy Morris found three of the dead cats underneath her trailer. Another was left in the street. Since she knew Byerly had made previous threats against the animals, police knew exactly where to turn.
He's been charged with four counts of animal cruelty. In an unusual twist, a Charleston judge isn't about to go lightly on his ass. Byerly's bond has been set at a whopping $100,000, which might be some kind of record for an animal cruelty case. He faces up to 20 years in the slam if convicted and given the max on all counts.
