Shane Byerly Lured Cats with Pot Roast, Then Shot, Beat and Poisoned Them to Death

• I knew Shane, and believe me, he's one of the worst people I've ever met in my life. Me and my boyfriend unfortunately went camping with him once, before we knew him well, and during the trip, I told my boyfriend that I was pretty sure he was a sociopath. He's one of the most disturbed/disturbing people I've encountered. I was not at all surprised to find out what he did. I can't even describe his level of shittiness.

• I don't believe in Spay'ing or Neutering my own animals. I'm not chauvinistic enough to believe "their balls=my balls". I'm not selfish in hating adoption or even skipping adoption, every Cat and Dog or otherwise I've ever owned has come from the streets or through adoptions. I don't believe in it because I wouldn't want someone else deciding for ME whether or not I was allowed to breed. I realize other people think animals can't 'Think' or that they don't 'think that way about sex' I get that and I respect others for that opinion but I believe my own should be respected as well. I also believe in personal responsibility for my own animals and street cats, I also believe there IS a problem with people buying the "Cute" factor and then throwing them out to die or turn into strays. I strongly disagree with such practices and would readily join in the fight of putting this kind of cruelty as felonious in nature. I realize there are "expert" opinions and others who would say "Now let me tell YOU what YOU don't know" and give me the third degree but it is my own belief and it has worked for me. There are those who would tell me that fixing Cats and Dogs fixes their behavior, bull-shit(french), my Mother Fixed a Malamute we took in off the streets believing his violent behavior towards other dogs would be curbed easier when she started training. He's thus sinced stopped going to the Dog park after an Incident with another, aggressive and fixed Dog, Fixing your animals does not suddenly make them more timid, some Animals will just be violent and need heavy and thorough training. My particular breed of Cat(her dominant mix) is said to be extremely violent and I was told fixing her would fix the issue, I trained her personally and though she always tends to work her way into getting whatever she wants(through whatever means necessary) she isn't nearly as violent or aggressive as she was when we first held her close. I believe in personal responsibility. Fortunately when my Cat escaped her one and only time she'd only had a Single Kitten, we did not do this on purpose but we did not throw the kitten out and we've taken care of him since. We didn't fix him but we know our house well enough to know the nuances, we do not let him outside un-supervised and we are very careful to make sure he understands where his aggression is needed. We've also put bells on them(as others always should) to curb dead bird desires and know where they generally are. The result of training and patience has resulted in two very loving kitties(though with prince/princess attitudes as all Cats have). We believe heavily in adoption, almost every animal we've EVER owned we've taken in from the streets, further, any we can not we have thusly taken care of and found homes for, I've also respected the decisions of others' in that if they wanted to fix the cat it was THEIR right to do so, even if I disagree. I realize and accept that others' disagree with my philosophy but I have never turned away love or care from an abandoned/fostered cat and have NEVER made preference to Breeding over adoption, I still rightly believe that whatever you believe you should ALWAYS adopt your pet, there are enough on the streets and that you should take RESPONSIBILITY for your pet if you don't fix them, you have to watch over them, train them properly as they WILL have more aggression in the long run and be patient with them. Then, that's just my long two cents.

We, as humans, have a moral obligation to use science and medicine for the highest good. Better to spay/neuter one than to euthanize momma and kittens.

• Nursing mother cats CAN BE FIXED before the babies are weaned. Momma will still produce milk and the nursing will not interfer with her recovery and incision. • Alecto: I'm sorry i blew up at you. I realized AFTER you posted the just of the story and not just the punch line (no pun intended) Your story freaked me out. As far as the chemicals in Anitfreeze: Yes they removed the chemicals that mess up the enviroment. Not the chemicals that poison animals/kids. I checked with poison control. And the tiny amount needed to kill a poor pet is still small, but with it's water base, that's why they drink it. I don't know the reason anyone had pets (legal or otherwise)that were numbering over 13! I haven't heard that. But as a cat shelter, I have had ton's dropped off to me. Left in boxes and bags. I have had at one time, 73 cats (including my own 3) in my house. Hence, i redid the garage as a safe shelter for them! Mom cats with litters, litters being born with me, newborns without mommies, and single cats. I was able to get foster homes and full time homes for these kitties. And to those that had mommies but couldn't spay them (nursing cats have to wait for at least 6 weeks) i gave "coupon" and they called me back to have them fixed. Has anyone every had to nursing a newborn kitten? it's heartbreaking. they have to be feed EVERY 1 hour. I have had newborns die in my hands because i couldn't feed them all! Talk about sad. I vowed never to lose another one! And i haven't. Whenever i have newborns, my kids and grandchildren help feed so none die! (have 8 right now. About 4-5 days old. Just got them friday night) I am at work with the 8 kittles with me. And i have 4 bottles with milk with me. Thank God i have a private office!!!! Anyways, i agree with most on here. If you have a pet (no matter what it is) it is the owners responisblity to have the animal fixed (unless you are showing it) Even if it's an indoor animal, it's the responsible thing to do. Male cats spray unless they are fixed. Females can drive you crazy if not fixed. It isn't worth it. God, now i sound like Bob Barker!!!!

• I am certainly not trying to defend what this guy did, but when does the "pet" owner have to take some responsibility? I've read about this story on a number of different websites now and there are so many discrepancies in these stories it really makes me wonder how truthful any of them are. The pictures you posted on your facebook show that you surely don't have room in your trailer for 13 cats. It looks as though it's ready to fall apart, so if you can't afford to fix it, how can you afford to support 13 cats? Did they all have their shots? How were you going to afford to have all the new kittens spayed/neutered if you didn't even get the mother cats fixed? How were you going to afford to feed all of them? If he had never talked to you once before about these cats being a problem, how did you know it was him? One story suggests that he went around the neighborhood talking about taking matters into his own hands, and that's how you knew to confront him. As a responsible pet owner, you either don't let the cats outside or you take them to the SPCA yourself for fear of their safety. Why would the vet give you daily updates on the cat which needed amputation, yet not tell you that your pets litter was going to be euthanized? If this litter of kittens were your pets, how did the vets get them? Why weren't they safe inside? If these cats were your "pets", why do you only show one picture of one of them on your facebook? Responsible pet owners tend to have more pictures of their animals than one would ever want to see. If one was a "neighbors pet" why isn't this neighbor speaking out? Granted these questions come from reading about this story on a many different websites as well as your facebook. It just seems more probable to me that these cats were feral strays that you decided to unoffically adopt. That doesn't make them your "pets" and there are city ordinances which make it illegal because when they are not properly cared for, they are peSts, not pets. Had you done the responsible thing, i.e. officially adopt them, spay/neuter, deworm, give them shots, etc., this probably would have never happened. Again, I'm not defending this idiot, but it's like the real truth and laws only seem to apply when they're in your favor. So I ask, do you Ms. Morris take any responsbility for your actions?

• For those who don't know the cats did have collars and were inside they had a window open and the POS lured them out it with the meat. I know the family and all the cats were mostly indoor only went out for a little while each day. He is a monster and he deserves everything that happens to him, He never once though about the fact that they were pets. This boy also use to sit on his porch and shot birds with a bb gun so what did they do pooped on his car. Just fface it there are some mean people in this world he just got caught.

• These were MY cats not feral and 2 of 4 of them were spayed and neutered this sicko could knock on my door and ask to use my internet or my water hose but never said ANYTHING about my pets and just so ya know he also STARVED his own pitbull Buster to death and when many neighbors called animal control about the dog he simply refused to come to the door.. This is a BAD person in general tried to act like the neighborhood bully ... these were babied pampered pets who lived indoors but enjoyed being outside sometimes this sicko bragged about it to his friends and neighbors after he committed this horrendous crime and he not only killed my pets but 2 other families lost theirs in this killing spree just I have stood up to become the voice of these poor innocent babies

• I have one outdoor cat. He wears a collar with 3 bells, because not only do I love kitties I love birds. In fact my outdoor kitty and parrot are best friends. Every year my neighborhood has a feral cat problem. At that time Jethro is confined to the house. If you aren't going to spay/neuter your cat, be responsible in minding where they are roaming, and just leaving them on their own I don't feel sorry for you. Though I don't want any kitty to be inhumanely desposed of, I also do not want my heart to break seeing tons of feral hungry kittens around my block.

• We don't have a feral cat or stray cat problem where I live (the coyotes, big cats, bears, and foxes make it dangerous for ANY cats outdoors) so I can't really comment on how difficult it would be to deal with. What I DO know is that nothing about shooting an animal five times in the face with a pellet gun is reasonable or humane. That's just someone who likes to inflict pain on small creatures that can't "tell" on him, and I doubt he would care if this was someone's pet or not.

• There are lots of ways to deal with them humanely and effectively. Try calling your local humane societies, they will either offer to help trap them all, or help round them up for free neuter-release. First try cat repellent sprays and pellets that won't kill them but will make them stay away. Try the Home Depot or such.

• hey i have no problem with folks that love and own cats. i do have a problem with all the cats i have in my yard destroying my personal property and making my yard stink. if i wanted cats i would have got cats on my own. maybe this guy felt the same way.

• i hate cats. they're dirty disease carrying rodents and they climb all over my house and my vehicles and kill the birds that come to the birdhouses my son built. i wish this guy could come to my house and thin out the cat population that the rental neighbors brought with them. yesterday the lady through out a cardboard box that she must have kept some of them in; it smelled so bad of cat piss that it stunk up my whole yard until i sprayed it down with a hose.

• So for those of you who don't know it I work at an SPCA. But it became a no kill shelter some years back so there is a seperate animal control facilty in our area. Here as well as anywhere else the stray cat population is staggering. BUT this can also be looked at from a different side. If you domesticate a cat and keep it outside for ffs have it spayed or nuetered. DON'T keep letting it reproduce than using the Animal Control facilities as birth control. Most areas offer spay/nueter programs for a fraction of the cost, and if you still can't afford it than you just don't need a pet! A similiar story to this one happened where a couple people from a town trapped all the "dumpster cats' and their kittens to be spayed or nuetered and then re-released them. 2 days later all 10 were shot. Why? At least someone was doing something about it. It is about responsibility as a pet owner as much as anything else. As far as this guy goes I might no piss on him were he on fire. And I am a dog person more so than cats. But WE domesticated them. Took away some of there fine tuned hunting skills. And so believe it or not it is up to us to control the poputlation as best we can.

• Precisely because no one else in the community would do it, I have taken care of a cat who just showed up one night. He arrived already neutered, with some ticks and fleas, and pretty darn hungry. I'm the only one who's invested in de-worming him, putting flea drops on him, that prevent ticks, mites and worms too, feeding and caring for him. I really don't have the money to do so. But, I can't just ignore the little guy. He has such a great personality and he is so smart and mature, I just know that whoever had him neutered either lost him, or they didn't appreciate him. Because he insists on going out at night, and he'd only holler and dig to get out if I didn't let him out, I always fear that someone will do what Alecto's mean granny does to innocent creatures.

• CCCCC, I do understand the reasoning behind having to have an outdoor cat/dog. and dont fight that. I had one as well that had behavior problem after it got out and was missing for 4 weeks at the tender age of (6 months old) I was actually able to re home him with a single woman who had him fixed and declawed (which i do not agree with- different story on that!) and he has been with her for 3 years now. Not a problem since. Only, if your pet has to stay outside, then be a responisble owner and spay/neuter them so the won't over populate the area, spray urine all over, Make sure they have regular feedings (so they don't wander in search of food)Maybe have a "safe" area where cat can go to sleep out of weather. Many things people can do. Just hate those that throw the animal out and could care less.

• Alecto: You do understand what happens when an animal (any animal) licks anitfreeze? if causes their stomacks, intestants and bowels to swell and explode. Its posion that takes hours of unhuman pain to kill these animals. Not to mention that it is a arrestible offense for cruelty to animals and the enviroment to be putting anitfreeze out. that's is beyond understanding. And you condone this? Unfreaking real. Just think what would happen if your child (if you had one) would be like if it got into antifreeze. THERE IS NO CURE FOR INGESTING ANTIFREEZE, you die! Plain and simple. Unfreaking believible!

• What a punk a$$!! How manly do you have to be to shoot or otherwise hurt a 7 lb. animal. I hope he gets to be somebody's girlfriend in jail. Maybe some kind inmate will show him how it feels to be on the receiving end of some abuse...

• One last thing, I do think that some cats are outside for a reason- their owners have no other choice. I have 2 cats and 2 dogs. I believe that owners need to take responsibility for their pets, which is why I have a fenced yard. However, one of my cats must live outside. She began life as an inside cat but was later determined to have severe behavioral issues- she pees all over the place. I had her checked by 2 vets. I bought multiple litter boxes and cleaned them daily. It isn't a physical malady; she is just one bad kitty. The shelter doesn't want her, nor does anyone else, due to her issue. So she lives outside. None of my neighbors seem to have a problem with this. I would hope that they would talk to me about it if they did. And yes, she does have bells on her collar.

• Hey - my husband never had his malamute dog neutered and unfortunately he's too old now, not a nuisance however because we keep him kenneled whilst outside but my husband thought it was cruel to neuter male dogs or animals in general. So after I cleaned the cobwebs from his pointed little head I got our female dog spayed. My cat has been spayed since about 9 months. I think it's necessary.

• If you're so concerned about 'feral' cats, you can trap them yourself and hand them over to your local animal control. Of course if you're a sadistic bastard, you'd be more inclined to torture them yourself first.

• I hear everyone. And i do agree there is a major problem with feral cats and dogs. And if as Pete says these were someones pets (Hello, collars and bells please and maybe id tags?) I still say the owners are responsible for allowing them outside unprotected. I am not condoning the murder of them, but take ownership of any problem that your pet is causing! And Alexdarc, Sorry about your room mate. I understand that it is expensive and hurts like hell. Never happened to me, but someone i know. And thank you for being a responsible person and attempt to crub whatever you could. If your neighbor is being such a crab, give him the vet bill for the neutering (yet i know you said it was a free clinic) but charge him for your time, gas, and any other expense. Also include a copy of a letter to the ASPCA advising them of his lack of responisblity for his pet that he allows to roam at will and how you had the cat fixed assuming it was a "throw away" cat or a feral one. Boy that will jump his blood pressure. here in MA, if i had done this, i would have been able to claim ownership of this cat. dude would have to take me to court to get it back, but he wouldn't because of his lack of attention to the pet. We just started registering (like a dog) our cats the last couple of months. I dont mind paying the $10 per cat once a year. Mine also have chips inthem in case they do get out and run off. Even thoguh mine are indoor cats, they do go outside with me into my yard. But they are never allowed outside alone or without their leashes or inside the cat run i built.

• I love animals - and this guy definately has problems. He was exterminating with extreme vengeance, but the stray cat problem is a real issue. In my old neighborhood the things used to live under our front porch, one of my roommates got bit and had to have a round of rabies shots. (Which are expensive of you don't have insurance.) So we decided to round up as many as we could into cat carriers and we took them to a free spay/neuter & rabies clinic. We did this for 5 years, and had nearly 35 cats spayed/neutered. Then the last year a neighbor freaked out when he found out that we were the ones who neutered his cat. We had no idea it was his cat, no tags, and we'd never even seen the act on his property. I've never seen anyone so upset about a pair of cat's balls.

• Ok, i'm on vac day and still on here! 1st of all: I'm a cat lover! I like all animals just more prefer to have cats, which i have 5 of them. all are nuetered/spayed and all are indoor kitties. 2nd: Most states have an ASPCA and yes they will kill them if brought to them due to over population and diseases. Ours will actually take the feral cat/kitten(s) but will charge a fee for it. We also have a few No-kill shelters/foster homes for feral kitties. If you know someone. We do not adviretisse (and yes i said we) because of anyone and their brother just dropping them off in boxes and such. Everyone knows they are not cute anymore after 6 months old or so! anyways, my garage was converted 9 yrs ago as a cat shelter. I am registered with the city and board of health. And have a prefect record with them. I live trap feral cats and take them to a vet who works with me. I am charged a very low fee per animal for spaying/nuetering and shots. Of course this is for the cats that are adoptible. For the ones that are not, they are tested for any cat disease first. If none, we attempt to place them with foster families. After shots. If after 3 months, there is no problem with foster family, i will then have them fixed. And then they are adopted out. If the poor animal is badly injured or sick and are unable to be helped, then we have to put them down. it's the only humane thing to do. I do this with 5 other women. We have run this program for 22 yrs now. My garage became the "center" due to it's size and that it's heated and vented. It is equiped to comfortable hold 150 cats and even has a "play zone" so they can socialize. anyways, we do all this out of our own pockets. we get no tax breaks, no nothing. We have a donation drive 4 times a year depending on how many we have been able to help and place with a loving family. And that's for food, cat litter, blankets ect. Never for money. and of course the Vet is awesome! You are all correct. owners are responsible for a pet. ANY pet. You don't get a pet and think it is a throw away. That is so sad to be driving and see dead animals side of the road. And most are cats. But outright killing them is cruel and non humane. They do not ask to be out on the street. The owners are at fault. I know not everyone likes animals. And i can respect that. And yes, bells on collars if you allow your pet to be an outdoor pet (bad owner!) to protect the birds! Ever see a blue jay attack a cat? I have. I joke that i need to put bells on them to protect my "cats"! they are nasty and can cause grave danger to a cat. Feral cats are more populated then say feral dogs, because a cat will hide. A dog doesn't. And the pregnacy rate for a cat is, 97 days and then 4 weeks later, they are futile again. Most ferals have 3-5 litters a yr. So if any ferals are fixed, the males are the ones to be fixed! The feral males are worst with spraying urine everywhere, Besides if the males a fixed less litters and then get them males at 3 months before they can produce and slowly the ferals will "die" out on their own. But again, someone needs to take a interest in this (spca or a animal group) for it to work. I, with my group, in 22 yrs we have "cleared 3 areas in my town doing this service. • I don't know for sure, Nick, but I think these were domesticated cats who simply spent most of their time outside.

• Imafan: When there is a case of overpopulation, I can understand, though not agree, with a proper form of euthanasia. The horrendous pain & terrible death dealt by this douche bag, shit head was the worst choice he could make. As CCCC said, I too have had this issue with my property, trash rummaged through & tossed around my driveway, flowers & plants uprooted, bird bath knocked over, even crap in both my driveways. These issues are from cats & dogs. We also have a terrible, almost, infestation of raccoons, opossum, foxes & other furry nuisances. As well as some very mean, aggressive & destructive Golden Eagles, two ganged up on & tried to carry off my Lab, they would stand on & slowly crush to death starlings which, until that point had been the most annoying feathered invader I had dealt with & they tore out chunks of wood from the decks. I do not live in the country or in a small town, I live in a metropolitan area. When the subdivision was built, the committee voted to remove as few trees as possible. Even with all that, the thought of killing any of these animals had never & still does not cross my mind. I am not some bleeding heart liberal who has a bleeding heart, close minded soap box I feel the need to perch on & preach from. I just think he could have found a less than weeny headed option.

• First, this guy is a POS. There is no doubt about that. However, I live a few houses down from a family that collects cats. On a hot day, you can smell the urine coming from that home. Its fking sick how they chose to live. Tons of cats are all around that house making it worse. The lady will not let anyone take her kitties, and nobody seems to want to help her. There are times where I have wanted to trap all those damn cats and just put them somewhere. The come into my backyard and sleep on my expensive outdoor furniture. They leave paw tracks all over my new truck overnight. I even have scratch marks where one didn't make it all the way to the hood, and tried to claw its way back up. I'm fed up and frustrated, I feel helpless, but I never once thought of hurting them.

• Cats are huge pests when not controlled. Somebody has to kill them like any other invasive species. If no organization will take the responsibility of eliminating them in a "humane" manner then the crazy nuts are going to take matters into their own hands.

• It is indeed the owners responsiblity to properly take care of their animals, but I do in a strange way agree with I'm a fan's attitude. Feral cats are seriously a danger. And believe it or not, feral kittens are worse then adults. Adults will usually run off if you try to get next to them (thus the luring in with food) while the kittens will cower and hiss. Thus making it easy for a young child or any one who likes cats to pick it up thinking to themselves "oh look, it is a kitten" and then POW....scratches and bites all over. Think of the many health probs/ diseases these poor animals have. And even IF animal control/ASPCA could take the cats, they are unadoptable due to lack of "social skills" I guess you could call it. Not right in anyway to kill them but I can truely understand the want/need to.

• I would like to add that if no such programs exist in your area, you can often find a sympathetic vet who will spay or neuter at a very low cost, especially in cases where you are dealing with multiple strays.

• i'm a fan: I have the same problem in my neighborhood. I have several bird feeders too, and get a little sick of finding bird carcasses everywhere. In addition, I garden, and when I plant seedlings I often lose several plants to cats using this space a a giant litter box. However, it has never occurred to me to kill the cats. I called several animal shelters and rescue organizations and managed to find a program that traps and spays stray cats. They then release them back into the neighborhood. Other programs offer low-cost spaying for strays. (The reason why they release the cats back into the neighborhood is based on scientific studies that indicate that displacing feral cats is useless. Another population will only move in to replace the displaced population.) Yeah, I still have to contend with garden and bird issues. So what? That is the cost of living on planet populated with creatures other than humans. It's my responsibility to work around it. The reason why this guy should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law is because studies have confirmed that those who are abusive to animals, are abusive in general. People who have established any pattern of cruelty should be regarded as dangerous. For anyone else with a cat and/or issues with dead birds, I recommend collars fitted with bells.

• what a piece of shit-I agree that people are irresponsible with their pets, I can't let my own dog out into my yard due to neighbor dogs running loose and being the proud owner of a Staffordshire Terrier my dog would eat the neighbor dogs. But I would NEVER harm those neighbor dogs because it isn't their fault, it's their owner's fault. Take it up with the animal's owner.

• "Who gets pissed about roaming cats? A tight-ass, that's who." Uh, have you ever lived in a neighborhood where there are tons of cats roaming around? I do. First of all, they are disgusting animals. They urniate and crap all over the place, hang around my yard, on my doorstep, and in the late spring, were using my lawn as a breeding ground. Animal Control in NYS does not handle cats. The local shelters don't take them because they are over-run with them already. I am also to the point where killing these annoying, nasty pests is sounding better and better every day. Bottom line: people are irresponsible with their cats; if you're going to have them, get them fixed, or the whole neighborhood suffers. It would also be nice if they prosecuted people as harshly for real crimes as they do these "animal cruelty" cases. What has this country come to?

• I read about this enema nozzle suckler over at Dreamin' Demon last night, too. Really, isn't it time that we change the laws sufficiently so that the penalties are much scarier? I hope and pray the citizens of his town melt the phone of the prosecutor's office and demand his pelt on a pike.
