Police arrested him on the railroad tracks near the University of Louisville trying to steal copper wiring to sell as scrap. He was caught with wire cutters after he attempted to flee officers.
It would seem a petty crime, if not for the damage Cucue could have caused had his caper been successful. Police say he "cut and stole communication lines, affecting train traffic across a multi-state area," according to WDRB-TV. Had the damage gone unnoticed, they believe it may have caused a derailment, creating untold loss of life among both train workers and passengers and nearby residents.
Cucue's been charged with interference with railway communications, wanton endangerment, theft by unlawful taking, possession of burglary tools, fleeing police and criminal trespassing. A judge refused to grant him bond.
But when petty theft has the potential to turn into mass murder, shouldn't there be some sort of statute the addresses the magnitude of the fallout?
