• My boyfriend's sister had the pleasure of fostering the toddler daughter of the Labbertons for almost two years. She is such a wonderful and special little girl. Even though we knew she had been through some very tough times before we met her, she has a sweet and beautiful personality that shines through it all. She has now been reunited with her younger sister and they have been adopted. I can only hope that their new sibling will be able to be adopted by the same family.

• We are always so quick to throw stones....My only hope is that "The Children" receive the help they need. It is way too late for the parents. They did not get the help they needed when they were children, therefore the problem runs full circle. There is alot more to it than finding these children a good home. They will have years of difficulties in all aspects of their lives, as I am sure the parents in this situation did. I agree, you must protect the children. If only the "State" recognized that once you take the step to remove, you also have the responsibility to make sure all the child's needs are met until they are adults. In adopting and raising two children from a similar background, I know how hard it is to get help for these kids. With the uprising of child placement, the system needs realize that if you keep getting the same results with these kids we are doing something wrong. There needs to be more support and education for the people who are out there taking on challenges these children face on a daily basis.

• I get Kristin's original point, trash breeding trash. You do see it and it does cross the economic/ethnic barriers. People with no skills at parenting, having babies and raising them to do the same. On the issue of welfare, I have no problem with families receiving aid, none whatsoever, if they take this job of parenting seriously and do a good job at it. As I see it, we're paying people to raise their kids, feed their kid somewhat nutritious meals and take care of them. You never know of ones situation and if they are abusing the system or really need help for a minute. so you shouldn't judge and jump to conclusions. I'm a Court Appointed Special Advocate, also called CASA or Guardian Ad Litem, depending on which state you live in. I went through an intense training of more than 26 hours to learn to monitor the progress of a child in need of assistance. Its a volunteer position I don't get paid for, not in money anyway.

• It was harsh, maybe I'm just cranky. Sorry - I didn't mean to come off quite so irritable. My point was that federal statutes are the final call to how states handle CPS and its irritating when states that seem to need the federal funding most because their workers are, well, overworked, the funding is cut because the state can't keep up to fed standards. OK, so maybe that's why I'm cranky. I work with kids in foster care and used to be a foster mom before I adopted my son and I really wish people became more knowledgeable of the system so instead of the loud outcry of WHYWHYWHY!!! people would do more, give more, not just money, but effort and time.

• Leah, a paralegal doesn't make you a lawyer, nor an expert on federal statutes. Try Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act. Keeping Children Safe Act. and the Adoption and Safe Families Act and the many amendments of each. Federal law sets the standard for Child Protective Services and states are required to use it as the minimum guideline in direct relationship with the funding each state receives. Spend some time researching before you become a lawyer online. Federal statute: Within 12 months of being removed from the parent's custody, a permanency hearing must be held. If he child has been in foster care for 15 of the most recent 22 months, the petition to terminate parental rights must be filed. Iowa law shortens that timeline to 12 months, or 6 months if the child is under age 3. No state can have a more liberal guideline. The ONLY exception to this is if the child is a member of an Indian tribe. (Indian Child Welfare Act) The judge must follow the law, and you cannot make an order for an unborn child.

• I'm no expert in family law in that state, but federal statutes are pretty tough, and states are required to be tougher when it comes to children in foster care. The parents have 12 months to show significant progress toward permanent reunification with the children before the termination proceedings begin. That timeline is even shorter for the baby. Once parental rights for one child have been terminated (and it looks like thats a distinct possibility here) the courts then do not have to prove anything to remove parental rights for the other children. The judge can't make a removal order for a fetus, he's saving it for the birth and by then the termination process will be in full swing. There is some comfort in knowing that if they have rights terminated, the courts can then remove without just cause any future children they have.

When you are on top of the world, making excellent money, doing anything you want because you got the cash to do so, it is much easier to look askance at those who don't appear to share your work ethic and values. And once that happens, you will not "appear", superficially, any different to the remorseless machine, or the drones driving it, than those who are genuinely slackers, moochers, leeches and all around lousy humans. Sad, but true. I have no confidence that any of this will be different when I reach the point of being completely unable to support myself because of health issues. I anticipate with great dread having to fight, when my resolve and stamina is at its lowest, for every inch of help from my government--which is the same as saying from my fellow citizens--so that I am not lumped in with the slackers and moochers. I fully agree with you about doing everything you can while you can to pull your own weight and not rely on anyone else to do it for you. I was raised the same way. That ethic, however, makes it impossible for persons to ask for help when they genuinely, sincerely, honestly, need it. And so, they wait until their predicament reaches crisis levels. And by then, it is much more expensive, paperwork intensive and sympathy deficient. Unless the crisis is visible, such as having to use a wheel-chair. It is part of the reason I fear for some of our veterans. They are raised to be especially self-sufficient, especially improvisational. Which works great in combat. Not so great in ho-hum, go to work daily life. And so, many of them end up on the bowery or living in homeless camps under freeways, or out in the woods. That breaks my heart. I resented it too, a lot, when I was healthy, working hard, making good money, and I would see our news media sensationalize the moochers and slackers living on my dime and it would make me hate them. Of course, not all of them, but many. Now what I resent is knowing that I will need the benefits of my mandatory Social Security deductions and Medicare and so on, but they may not be around for me. Right now there's talk of raising the age of retirement to 70 of all things. It's incompetent, cruel mismanagement, greedy and lunatic. All that said (dang), I still agree with you for the most part. When people have demonstrated in such graphic and unequivocal terms their unsuitability for parenthood, then they have to agree to give up their fertility. Make it a choice. Go to jail for 20 years or go for just 10 and agree to have your tubes tied (men and women). I bet many would agree without hesitation. And that is a plea bargain I would see justice in.

These parents need not just prison sentences which they have duly earned, but psychiatric counseling while they are in singh-singh. I was willing to cut the girl some slack and scratch her behavior up as yet another example of severe Post-Partum Depression, but considering the escapades she has committed a year later while the children were in foster care shows a deeper long-term mental illness, somewhere between projecting her own insecurities about Body Image unto her children, and Munchausen By Proxy Syndrome (MBPS). I'm not going to even speculate what the deal is with Samuel Labberton, other than being a Grade A Douche. As far as the arguments towards these being prime examples of parents sucking at the Welfare Teat, or being P.W.T. (Poor White Trash), these accusations may or may not be false, but the making of such on insufficient data is entirely baseless. Unless I missed something, we have no idea if they are Upper, Middle, or Lower Class or whether or not they are on Welfare. All we know for sure from the article is that they are horrible excuses for parents and have some seriously f-d up psychological issues.

But I think we've more than paid for the powdered milk and government cheese with our contributions since then.

• My parents had six kids. There were times that I would say that they could not afford us. My mother even had to use food stamps for a short window of time. It's easy for all of us to make fun - I'm am one of the biggest offenders on here - of others but categorizing women who have large families as trash because at some point it may be hard for them financially isn't a fair assessment. My oldest sister works in cancer research at NIH, my brother hold the highest security clearance that you can hold in the US - he does something that he can't even talk about. I hold 2 degrees and I am the head of HR for a large insurance group based in DC. My sister is a pre-school teacher, my other sister is the Director of PR for a national aviation group. Last but not least, my youngest brother is a techie nerd working for the government too. My parents may not have been able to "afford us" but I think we turned out to be a pretty fucking good bunch of white trash.

• Does your generalization include: family of 6, who's father has been unemployed for 2 yrs and mom who is only able to find part time work? If so, then i hate to do this, but your generalization is wrong. In our state, where unemployment is at a record high of 11.2% it's very hard to find a job. And what jobs are out there, you can only get thru temp services. she doesn't qualify for welfare, but does get food stamps and medical for the kids only. and they shop at walmarts, only because we have no other "department" stores around us. This doesn't make her/them trash nor "Wal-Mart types" I normally understand the reasoning behind a statement such as yours, as i have made my feelings known as well regarding "welfare moms" and deadbeats. but to generalize most people under your statement is wrong and offensive to people who are trying and is unable to do anything (except move to another state)to try and improve their lot in life.

I describe "trash" as anyone who has children that they cannot afford and who use any type of government handouts that I have to pay for, due to their own inability to assume responsibility for themselves, their lives and their dependents. People who don't properly raise, take care of, and impart basic social values and norms to their children. Trash are people who expect others to row their oar in this thing we call life. People who assume no responsibility or accountability for their plight in life and force others (taxpayers) to assume that burden. Others' rights should stop at the point mine become infringed upon; trash, however, doesn't understand this, or in most cases simply doesn't care. When the government "rewards" idiots for breeding MORE children instead of fewer, you have a big, big problem. The two things I am happy to put my tax dollars toward are free contraceptives and free or low cost abortions - anything to stem the tide of more idiots breeding children... Being poor doesn't make a person trash. Having six kids while working at 7-11 makes you irresponsible trash. Only have kids YOU can AFFORD to have. The vast majority of "poor" people are where they are due to poor choices. You may not like that truth, but it is the truth. Anyone can succeed in this country, but you've got to make wise choices. Wise choices require discipline and sacrifice, two things most people are unwilling to accept, thus the massive "entitlement" mentality this country is stuck with today. Hope this helps. • Kristin: Obviously these people are messed up. But I am curious, how do you define "trash" in general? I ask because you mentioned the "Wal-Mart types" and welfare moms yesterday. The thing that scares me is that there are plenty of poor, well-meaning, uneducated people who could be mistaken by the judgmental as "trashy." They would make great parents. Unfortunately, if there ever is a committee or person who determines who gets to be parents, they might disallow certain people based upon their income, intelligence, appearance, etc.

• Why not just take the child away right at birth? She's already proved with 2 kids that she can't be a fit mother and the father sure as hell isn't helping. I honestly think that the government should have population control for people who are either on government support and shouldn't let people have kids if they've already lost their children. Once they get their kids back then ya, if they prove to be a good parent then let them have more. But there are already so many kids in the foster system, the last thing we need is more. And babies are supposed to be fat. I think the mother has some serious mental problems about weight. And as for her sneaking stuff into the kids' food during visits, sadly it happens ALOT. One of the foster kids that was in the house visited his parents and was supervised and his mom had snuck in chocolate (even though he was highly allergic to chocolate). She fed him chocolate during the visit and later he went to the hospital. Just a fun little story about how even if parents are supervised they still sneak things into their kids if they really want to.
