| Police have been unable to find Roy Elwell, who's wanted for violating his sex offender status |
According to mother Laurie Kustes, the two had a history. She says Brittney was kidnapped by Elwell for a few days a year ago, and Brittney returned home from that ordeal addicted to meth. She was scheduled to testify in Elwell's upcoming trial when she disappeared this time. (See our original story here.)
Elwell was able to lure Brittney away from her grandmother's home on July 17 by sending a woman to get her. Brittney reportedly felt safe leaving with the woman, but she ended up being delivered to Elwell's grasp.
They'd been spotted around Greater Louisville for the past two weeks. During much of that time, Brittney was kept in a wooded area, where she was once again fed meth and offered little to eat. Laurie says that Elwell also smashed her daughter's cell phone so she couldn't call for help or be tracked. Brittney was also choked at one point.
Laurie says her daughter was "brutally, mentally tortured" during captivity, though few details have been released. Lt. Scotty McGaha would only say "They're horror stories. They're sickening. Frightening."
But Brittney managed to find her freedom last Friday, when she was driven to a drop-off by a friend of Elwell. She then called her boyfriend who called police. Brittney was taken to a hospital, according to her mom, and will once again have to go to rehab for meth addiction.

The trailer home is in an area known as Midgetville, which seems a fitting locale for a meth case like this. Police say he spoke briefly to detectives, then promptly lawyered up.
According to Brittney, she at first went willingly with Elwell and two others to party. But at some point, she wasn't allowed to leave. She says she was locked in a bedroom and beaten and sexually and mentally abused while they were all doing meth and Xanax.
"Everybody stayed pretty high and I did it with everyone else," she told the Courier-Journal.
So far, Elwell's only been charged with being noncompliant as a registered sex offender and failing to show up for a hearing. But he'll likely face additional charges if police believe Brittney's story.
Elwell is also being investigated in connection with another death, where someone was found hanging at a home where Elwell and Kustes were seen during their two-week disappearance.
