The DEA is looking to hire nine Ebonics translators to work in the Southeastern part of the country. It seems that the language changes so fast, existing agents sometimes have a difficult time translating wire taps, so they need those who speak Ebonics as their native tongue to help with translations.
The agency is already getting criticism from English snobs who believe Ebonics shouldn't be considered an official language. But just as agents in Minnesota must know Swedish slang to decipher the flow of contraband lutefisk, police in the Southeast must get pristine translations of Ebonics so they don't mistakenly arrest people for discussing the costume jewelry trade.
