Edelwina & Steven Leschinsky Tortured 3 Adopted Girls With Excruciating Punishment

To the outside world, Edelwina and Steven Leschinsky were a nice, church-going couple who opened their home by adopting three sisters from Russia. But if you asked the girls, they might prefer to be living in an orphanage during Stalinist times...

The first inkling that all was not right in their Larimer County, Colorado home came in January.
One of the girls -- who are ages 12, 13 and 14 -- showed up for school with a black eye. The girl told a deputy that her mom had chucked a snow boot at her over the Christmas vacation, hitting her in the face.

Steven Leschinsky watched his wife torture his three girls and did nothing to stop it

The deputy went to visit Edelwina, who confessed to doing it during a fit of anger. She was arrested, but the charge was eventually dropped. It seems, however, that neither deputies nor child welfare workers were through with the couple.

During further questioning of the girls, they discovered the Leschinskys were sadistic bastards who did their best to demolish their children's spirits.

Beginning in 2006, they kids had been tortured for any sin -- real or imagined -- with excruciating punishment. They were spanked with a belt and a piece of wood. One was forced to run 45 miles over three days for chewing her food too much. And they were often made to do pushups. Just to make sure their legs didn't touch the ground, Edelwina would place a board underneath their thighs that was embedded with nails, which punctured their legs when they came too close to the floor. .

The pushups were called "fisties," since they were forced to do them with their fists closed to make them more difficult. Sometimes they were forced to do them for 40 straight minutes. One of the girl's hands is now deformed from doing them so long on hardwood floors.

The oldest girl had to do 100 daily. During one punishment, she was sentenced to 3,600 fisties.

At other times the girls were forced to stand on their heads for more than an hour at a time and shower outside in the cold and rain. The couple also threatened to send the oldest girl back to Russia if she didn't behave.

Most of the punishment was administered by Edelwina, with Steven merely watching and occasionally supervising.

The shitbags are now charged with felony child abuse causing serious bodily injury, in addition to contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The kids, meanwhile, have thankfully been taken from the home.

Actually, I can see how Timothy Masters was so easily put into prison. We now live in a world that you are guilty until proven innocent. Trained professionals, FBI profilers, law enforcement officers and the local justice system is always right. Never mind, that the case workers selected for the forensic interviews are all contracted to the city as well, or that the first DHS case worker was immediately reassigned when she questioned the allegation, and that the first defense attorney resigned and said that he did not want to be "part of a witch hunt". It's ironic that the actual Salem Witch hunt also involved three girls of about the same age. I suppose the Leschinsky case is a bit different because you don't normally have a police officer who is a family member collecting evidence and making all the allegations. It's unfortunate that the actual DVD of the interview could not be posted online so the public can see how one of the kids actually said "Michelle told me to say..." in which the interview was quickly ended. There's really no substitute for being in the court so it's quite shocking to see how quickly people on this forum can come to a conclusion so quickly. If you sat in the family unification meeting, you'll would have known that Michelle's entire family had a serious issue with having a non-white parent raising white children. If you sat in court, you would have heard the Judge strike the statement by DHS that asian family's do not make good homes for foster children as a reason for not placing the children in the care of the Edelwina's family. At least they left out "white children". Child Abuse is serious, but, when someone abuses the law the way Michelle Leschinsky and her family has done, that hurts everyone in the community. It's a sad day when an icon such as Captain America who was known to stand up to bullies would now defend them...
Was justice served with a GUILTY PLEA AGREEMENT???? Absolutely NOT... Edelwina deserves to be in jail for a loooonnnggg time and suffer just like the 3 girls didsince being adopted.
They're really sweet children, and would only add a ton of happiness and enrichment to any family willing and able to open their doors to them. I don't see them ending up back in foster care...there are a ton of people who simply adore these children.

Joey, Sorry, buddy, but you're wrong. My Mother was "friends" with Winnie until she was witness to her verbally abusing the girls one day, and called her out on it. Everyone who knows this couple thinks they are so very sweet and nice (don't worry, my folks were once fooled too). Winnie is a MASTERMIND at manipulation, isolation, etc. There is soooooo much more on the police report than what the news stations are reporting. It's not ironic or by coincidence that the girls were questioned seperately by police, and all three magically came up with the same story. It's simple logic. I don't know if you are one of her victims from church or what, but it's very apparent that you have been fooled. Here is a link to a pdf file, from a reputable source (i.e. not a family member or friend who claims to be in the court hearing the truth), of the affidavit of probable cause regarding these three girls. If you read, you will see that three different children talked to five different people (a teacher, two police officers, a child protective worker, and a physician, all at different times and not all together) and told consistent stories. Furthermore, the parents admitted their actions, and the doctor swore that the child in question sustained serious bodily injuries. I am in no way saying the parents are the victims. And the facts that I am hearing are straight from the court hearing I was at on Monday, April 11, 2011. You should sit in one and you would agree with the statements I have made.

I never stated that the parents were angels. It just sucks reading articles like this that are blown WAY out of proportion and even the courts recognize that. I am not here to argue, I was just hoping to bring truth to those of you who do not sit in the court hearings. Like I said before, I hope and pray that justice is served to those who deserve it through this trial, weather its the parents or the officer that took the girls and I hope that the girls will heal from this whole situation.

If what the friend of the family knows is from personal experience/knowledge and/or what he/she gleaned in court, there is absolutely no reason that he/she cannot state what he/she knows on this or any other forum. Even if there is a gag order, he/she is not a party, and therefore cannot be bound by the judge to refrain from speaking. So, come on, sd1720, spit out some facts.
Some evil person who has the ability to con the police and social workers, I'm sure. Probably some evil person with some type of "undeserved clout or political power". This person obviously has it in for the parents and is just making up a bunch of lies. Because that's how things work. Without any proof at all, the cops can just come up and arrest you and hold you in jail forever without reason.

Of course I don't believe everything I read, but I can take it with a grain of salt. If new information is available, and you submit it, the article would be updated. If you cared about facts so much. If they are proved not guilty in trial, that will end up in the update, too. Yes, there are mistakes in media reports. That's why there are such things as corrections and retractions. You just coming here saying "I know that's wrong" doesn't do anything.

This is SO false. I am a close friend of the family and I would like to know where they got their facts for this article. It's rediculous to see how stories change from article to article. If you would like to know the TRUTH; These girls were taken illiagally and now the Larimer County police are being investigated. The officer that took these girls (illiaglly) was their second cousin who has never gotten along with the family. The girls are even more messed up now that they having been bouncing from house to house for the past year and a half. This specific officer has been in trouble previously for taking children from their parents without going through the proper steps of removing them from the home and she is also not allowed at some specific schools in the district because of certain incidents she has been involved with. Please don't jump into believing what these articles say. They are way over dramatic and I can't believe how much false information is presented in this article. PS. What is so wrong with kids getting excerise these days? They were never forced to do these things and they are all very athletic girls who enjoy training. Honestly i know these people and i believe that they would never do such things. Who knows if the girls just didn't like their new parents and when they got the chance they tried to get out of the house. Its a whole bunch of bull that all of you are talking like that when you don't even have a clue of what really happened and are just going off by what you read. By the way those pictures that are posted are the worst pictures they could have found of them, and it makes them look crazy but if you looked at them in person they look nothing like that.

Most of this is an outright fabrication. The parents did not do this. This is another example of Child Protective Services run amok. The people who really know what happened aren't being allowed to speak up. Hopefully with a new lawyer, the truth will come out. All of us who are parents should be greatly concerned about false accusations of child abuse. It can happen to any of us, and this case proves it.
I am saddened that you all believe everything that is written here just because someone said it was true. Things are not always what they seem and the truth is somewhere in the middle. The parents are not abusers as this article makes them out to be. If you knew these girls you would know that they have not been psychologically tortured or abused. The fact that they were adopted from Russia says volumes about the issues they have, especially attachment disorder. There is a lot more to this than what the press got a hold of.
wow im so sorry for these three girls i know what situaton they went through i feel so bad...i just wanted to tell th three girls they need to be strong they survived this so they can sty strong!
I also have became close to these girls and they are VERY sweet girls!!! I believe them 100% ..and yes these girls have been to the DR and they have all said there is damage two of the girls wrists..they tortured those girls..but i am thankful that they are in a safe place now with family and i hope the parents get what they deserve.
No offense, Joey, but it sounds like you're getting your info from the parents, who I'm not inclined to trust. It seems to me the police believe the girls are truly scared of their parents, so I'm inclined to believe both the girls and the cops on this one until proven otherwise. It's not just the hand that's the problem. It's the appearance that they were raining psychological torture on three little girls. That's the major sin we're talking about here.
Well J, The girls have had x-rays by other physicians and all of them haven't seen a thing, the only one who didn't take x-rays was coincidentally the same one who noted that the "hand is now deformed" And actually the kids were removed because of mere accusations and before anything was actually investigated. And so far much that has been said hasn't had any credibility to it just here-say not actual evidence. Larimer county is known for having credibility issues with child abuse cases, which is why, just so everyone knows, they have been under federal investigation.
Well Joey, we can be certain that X-rays will be submitted as evidence if the prosecution has a case. Kids don't get taken out of homes for non-sexual abuse because of mere accusations. The get removed because of clear marks on their bodies that aren't explained by credible stories.
For all you guys making assumptions without knowing this couple, I for one, am actually familiar with the family and their situation. Much of what is said in this article is a gross exaggeration of the reality. In truth, they are a loving, caring, and generous family, while somewhat strict in discipline they are nowhere near the abusers that they have been unjustly accused of being. I would find it odd that the girl with the alleged deformed hand has no x-rays of the supposed injury or the fact she can easily play volleyball for the school team. Also take into consideration that it would be near impossible for a teenage girl to do 3600 fisties if not even some Olympic body builder to accomplish. I mean think about it, for her to be doing 3600 fisties she would have to be one built 14 year old. Just take that into consideration
Intersting question, Pete, since my experience with it was immediately after finishing my degree. And, I wasn't technically a social work major, or even a social worker. The title was Child Care Worker, and it included some in- house training to get certified that probably wasn't entirely state mandated, I don't think. It was a lot of conflict resolution (i.e. how to restraint a violent kid on the floor with a partner) and the nuts and bolts of dos and don'ts in that environment, but also CPR and first aid stuff. For me, it would have been an easy burn-out, and I got out of it before I felt that was what was happening to me, but essentially, that may have been the same thing. So, my heart really does go out to anyone who stays in social work for the long term. Those people, most of them care a LOT. They don't always use the best judgment, but there are so many areas where you're confronted with making judgment calls you never expected. It's a really strange dynamic and environment. So, to more specifically answer you, I think it is actually more the bureaucracy and the lesser-of-two evils types of balance that has to be struck than the newbies working in the field. Because the newbies are constantly looking up to and taking mentoring from some 60 year old tough ass black woman who has been there for 20 years, for example. She and her veteren peers don't really let the novices get away with too many stupid mistakes. On the other hand, that's the person more in the trenches perhaps, than making policy, but often there's a good mix of that experience/personality types/demographics in both camps, seems to me. I'm really not as qualified to be making any assumptions as this might suggest, though. If any legit social workers are on here, would love to hear their comments.

I'm not certain, Man Down Under, but I think when you adopt from Russia, it's Russia that makes sure the parents aren't weirdos. And since Russia is basically a Third World country with nukes, it's doubtful they looked too hard at anything but the check the family was writing.
Man, that's terrible, J. When I think of these Russian girls, it's not so much the physical pain as it is the psychological terror that will leave them perma screwed for life. But I suppose all bureaucracies behave the same way: At some point they lose sight of what they're supposed to be doing and evolve into a giant entity that solely works to maintain the bureaucracy, which is what it sounds like you're describing. And the followers of the Mean Jesus would be less threatening to that bureaucracy than a crack head would. Another question: Do you think a lot of the problem comes from hiring kids fresh out of college as social workers, since they have no experience as parents?

OH yeah, Pete, I would be incensed if they didn't. But I did see where there were a lot of horribly abusive parents who were walking free as long as they were complying with whatever the mandated therapy was, or whatever. It's like there is an agenda to downplay it knowing there will be more fatherless/motherless children if they're really held accountable to the full letter of the law. You would see these really low-brow people who probably had the bare minimum of appreciation for therapy going along with it and sort of seeming to flaunt that they could game the system to get around having to do the time. Especially child molesting parents. In this case, the bodily injury is that missing link of proof which prevents a lot of prosecutions. I'm thinking in particular of one kid whose foster parents would stick lit matches between his toes and make him pray and repent whenever he would do the slightest normal adolescent stuff. It hurt and terrorized him, but didn't leave enough permanent marks that they could ever completely nail her to the wall over it. And her husband was evidently just standing by watching, so for all anyone knew, he was pitching in too. I sensed a real reluctance to have charges brought against them, though, as long as the kid was removed from the home. And I think they were still wrangling over it, because she had more foster kids and their own kids, and this was the only one willing to rat them out so far. So, the assumption maybe was you know, in some cases, they will just pick on one kid. It's strange, it's like she got some respect somehow that her status in the community had earned her that the typical crack addict mother who couldn't keep her children surely wasn't getting. I think it took so long in the woman's case I am thinking of for anyone to take it seriously, so when they finally did, it was as if they were still in denial about it, or that whole out-of-sight, out-of-mind thing.
Whattha...? I'm aghast,and pardon my ignorance for a moment, why isn't there mandatory background checks conducted on prospective adoptive parents in the US? It would seem bleeding obvious, surely. I'm pretty certain, in Australia the checks cover health, psychological and maybe even financial backgrounds of both prospective parents. The lack of systemic control, facilitating the despicable exploitation of innocent children. As a parent, I feel so much sorrow, when I hear shit like this. Maybe shrug off this veneer of compassion and empathy and put a serious hurtin' on people like this ! Just a thought... A sip beckons. Cheers.

You obviously know more about this subject than I do, J, but don't you think they're surely get time when the punishment was so severe they actually deformed a little girl's hand? I can't see them escaping vengeance for that.
I realize the racial aspects I'm projecting don't apply here, but I'm thinking in particular of some of the worst cases I had to hear about firsthand. It's insanely creepy to sit across a table at some therapy "intervention" for some lousy parents who only had the kid a few formative years of their life, but still want to exert some claim as having a say in their life. There's a fine line between making the situation worse for the kid if they don't continue to have some contact with their caretaker, but it's so unjust when they do. What's even crazier to me is how social services stepping in often seems to prevent the fullest extent of the law being exercised to punish the perps for what they did. Often they'll get probation or something, with restrictions on any further fostering. They rarely seem to go to prison. I guess because they usually are still raising some of their own, or others, if the state/county hasn't gotten on the ball to completely push it to the wall and remove all the kids besides just the one where abuse was proven. Unfortunately, child abuse is a depressingly low priority in our society as a whole.
Having worked in a group home for kids with severe behavorial problems, I knew of several adoptees who were subjected to this type of thing and had to be removed from the home. The part you don't see is that many of them can never function in society after. They might manage to get a GED, or if it wasn't too severe, actually graduate, etc. But when it's this bad, in a lot of cases, they're a total danger to society. They live a nightmare, and the terror doesn't just go away when they are removed from the home. It has infected their minds by that point. Again, they could adjust and be normal, but especially boys, it makes them meaner and more sadistic a lot of the time. So, where they COULD hold a job if they set their mind to it, they would often rather take their revenge on the world and are prone to commiting crime, because their whole existance has been one of a victim of crime. It often revolves around religious zealotry. The parents have convinced themselves that they are these extremely morally upright people and impose their level of puritanism on their foster kids. By all appearances, they get patted on the back for being a good samaritan and adopting the underprivileged black baby, only to end up just as bad as the reason they had to end up a ward of the state to begin with!
See what I was saying about the lesser of two evils when it comes to adoption? Leah's right, the orphanage people probably showed them more love. Some social workers do more parenting than parents ever do! Not to be such a pessimist, but I think there are a lot of sick fucks going out of their way to appear normal in order to adopt.
I am just assuming that the abuse has been going on for that long because it said in '2006' and besides, they would have had child services visiting for a while until adopting became final. So they wouldn't have done anything that would be seen as abuse until that was settled. Due to these girls ages, I don't believe they will be kept together and maybe the older one will go somewhere and the younger ones will stay together. I don't honestly know. Here in MA, if they are young children, they try to keep them together. If they are school age or a little older, it's harder. and with the abuse these kids have endured, they will be hard to place anyways. Together or by themselves. They may end up in a state run home for older kids. They already have had enough trama and then this on top, these kids need some major help. Or they will never make it in the 'real' world. crap like this should be strung and quartered. I wish i lived there, i would take all three of them into my home. They need a major amount of love and perfessional help.
