The 36-year old Ledbetter was on the run after violating probation -- the gentle, no-jail-time, slap on the wrist he received for having sex with a 16-year old while an assistant football coach at Alvarado High School in 2005.
One of the conditions of his probation was not to drink, but after his then-pregnant girlfriend threw him out last summer for cheating on her, Ledbetter tied one on Texas style, and found himself in front of a judge who was ready to revoke his probation.
According to Garry Lewellen, the Stephenville, Texas attorney who represented Ledbetter, "We had his problem worked out where he got deferred adjudication. It's one of those things where it makes no sense for him to abscond and not take care of business."
But Ledbetter had other ideas. He still had some friends up in Ottawa from his days as a backup quarterback with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and he talked his baby's momma into joining him on the lam. She says she didn't want to go, but he made her feel guilty, telling her she'd be a bad parent for not letting his 11-month old daughter be near her daddy.
Surprisingly, the relationship didn't work out, and the pair split four months ago. Still, they maintained an arrangement where Ledbetter would care for his daughter while she was away at work. On July 30, they got into an altercation after Ledbetter demanded her truck. When she refused, he handled it in the only way a petulant, narcissistic pussy knows how -- he kicked her ass.
Oh, and did we mention she was pregnant again, presumably with his kid? (I hate to call her learning-impaired, but shouldn't she have at least considered birth control?) When cops showed up they found her face beaten and one eye swollen shut. Ledbetter had already left -- in the truck, naturally.
Ledbetter, who's not a Canadian resident, will likely be extradited to Texas, where he will face 5 to 99 years of prison time for each count of probation violation.
On the positive side, he'll be a prized recruit in the next The Longest Yard-style convicts/guard football game.
