Harvey Gales Jr., two 15-year-olds and a 10-year-old were walking past a house in Greensboro, North Carolina when they noticed a puppy tied up in the yard. But they didn't have the normal kid reaction, like wanting to play with it...

No, they thought it would be much more fun to set it on fire.

According to police, Gales, 17, and his companions -- police aren't releasing the younger kids' names -- soaked some kind of cloth in lighter fluid. Then they attached to to the dog, probably through his collar. And then they set the four-month-old pitbull-lab mix on fire.

The family that owned the dog was out of town at the time. So it wasn't until a few days later that relatives caring for the animal brought the dog to a vet. It had tried to chew through its collar.

The dog suffered severe burns over 50 percent of its body, but is expected to survive.

"I think this was pure teen meanness," police Captain Janice Rogers told the News-Record. "It's a heinous crime against a defenseless animal for grins and giggles."

But the kids don't have much penance over their act. When caught, they told police "this was just a dog," says Rogers.
