• There is no excuse on this earth for that mother to not have gotten her ass off that couch and beat the hell outta that boy for disrespecting his grandmother. If she can't control her child, she shouldn't be raising him. I personally have 2 boys and if they so much as smirked at my Mom in a bad way, I would have gotten up off that couch and tore their asses up.

• There is clearly something wrong with this child, it makes me wonder where he "learned" this behavior, it seems too specific for a 5 year old to lash out in such violent ways. This is more a case of what exactly this child has seen or what exactly is going on in his head. He needs counseling, yes, but I don't think a child with this much violent behavior should be staying with a parent who clearly does nothing about it(besides probably encouraging it in some way). A FIVE year old does not learn by him/her self to attack people in such a manner, they just don't, period and any healthy minded individual can see that this kid has LEARNED it from someone, a can of aerosol? Beating her with her walker? There's so much more to this story and I'm willing to bet the "Grandma" isn't as innocent as this, if not directly involved in whatever is causing this boy to act out he see's her as a target of his oustings, isn't it entirely possible this is a cry for help? He's reaching out to this grandmother in the hopes that she'll HELP him? 5 year olds don't act violent for the same reasons adults do, they just aren't capable, they mimic and they reach out and I'm willing to bet this is the only form of expression that garners attention. There is no such thing as a "problem" child. Only "problem" parents. Counseling. And take this kid away from this mother who obviously seems not to give two shits what happens to him.

Sounds like you'll make a great parent some day. As to all those who agree that an old fashioned whooping is a good thing, despite what CPS may say or do... One thing I found being a parent, is that the most primitive of responses work best for a developing child. Before a child becomes fully sentient at age 7 or so, attempting to use Reason is either going to be an exercise in futility, or have limited success. Trying to rationalize with an out of control 5 year old, rather than use discipline is just begging for 13+ more years of Hell. (It's one thing to respectfully treat your 5 year old like a young adult, but another thing to assume they innately possess at birth the critical thinking required to understand Platonic Informal Logic or are able to comprehend the inference of Aristotelian Formal Logic!) However, an "Eye for an Eye" Pavlovian training works remarkably well for a developing child. This may sound vicious, cruel or abusive, but if a young child has a problem with slapping or hitting, for instance, then slapping or hitting them back provides a young child with an immediate understanding on a most intimate level as to why slapping or hitting is wrong. They cannot yet grasp necessarily the concept of physical pain unless they are experiencing it first-hand themselves. It's not like you have to backhand them full force...but just enough to make them realize that what they are doing to others is not pleasant nor welcomed. Besides, unlike other animals that have to undergo repeated applications of pain to relate Causation (cause and effect), children are able to make that relation immediately, generally not requiring repeated attempts to reinforce the lesson. Now, of course, if you are abusive and hit them for everything they do, rather than to only hit them when they hit others, then you are undoing such lessons and teaching them instead that violence is an acceptable form of expression...which is why it Corporeal Punishment is generally frowned upon. However, used sparingly, fitting the punishment to the crime (or "Tit-for-Tat") is a highly effective way to use the disciplinary application of pain to teach a child experiential understanding as why they should never act out in violence towards others.

• Yes. The way to teach this violent angry little boy to respect his elders and not smack other people around is obviously to belt him a few times. I'm sure calling him an inconsiderate idiot then locking him in his room should help as well.

• My kids, if I have any, will receive corporal punishment right out of the gate. Slam a door? Start doing pushups. Backtalk an elder, be it myself or a random stranger? Flutterkicks, go! Hit another child? Get in the plank position. Achieve an academic grade that is substandard? Run one mile every day until it meets the standard (in addition to massive studying, of course). And if you're confused, I mean, if you get three Cs, you're gonna run 3 miles a day every day til the next report card comes out (and ya better hope the Cs are gone). Manners will be enforced and standards will be met. The penalty for failing to meet the standard will be massive amounts of PT. You'll want to succeed under my rule, but the consequences for not doing so will lead to self-improvement.

• 1st off this story makes me feel much better about the tantrums my twin 4yr boys had today while we were shopping. 2nd, my sister works for CPS, the general rule is that a spanking is an acceptable form of punishment (if the child is age appropriate) as long as it is not over the line- hard enough to leave a bruise or severe welt. Lastly, I knew when I seen the story was from WV there would be some of the same, trite old jokes. I don't know any inbred people/families, nor is it the "norm" for "15 year olds to have babies", or whatever the poster said. • @alexa_kim Thx for the link to that discussion. That story incensed me so much I couldn't bear to read the discussions originally and had skipped over it. The discussion there was indeed a surprisingly intelligent and coherent read. My guess is as good as anyone's as to why the role of the father is so important when it comes to discipline and a child's development from 2-3 years of age onward. Maybe it's hardwired into our biology, maybe it's because our society has been so male-centric for a long enough time that integration into that society has fallen upon the father, or maybe it is because they aren't as generally emotionally attached to the child as the mother is, maybe it is because mothers by nature coddle while fathers nurture. Who knows. All I know is that ever since I can remember, my daughter has looked to me with trust to define boundaries, enforce those boundaries, and encourage her to explore the limits of those boundaries as she sees fit. Just like all children she has craved discipline and structure, having a clearly defined set of rules and expectations that are explained to her. (If I had to mark a beginning to this, I would say it was when she was old enough to start reaching towards the stove-top. Her mother would shoo her away, and I would explain "Don't touch! Hot! You will get hurt!". After the third attempt, her mother seemed content to continue trying to shoo her away, and I shrugged my shoulders and let her go ahead and touch the hot stove. As she got burned, she didn't look to me with a look of betrayal or abuse, but rather a look that screamed "Holy shit! You were right! For now on, I'm going to listen to what you say and take it as Gospel!") Although I'm not against Corporeal Punishment, I personally chose never to use it towards my own daughter. However, that is only because I found that I never needed to. It's not to say that she was a perfect child. She had her "Hell-Spawn of Satan" moments too where she would try to push the limits of the boundaries that were set for her. I just found that I could deal with them more creatively than with force. When she would fall to the floor in public throwing an epic tantrum, I would shrug my shoulders and tell her "Good luck with that" and walk away. I wouldn't get three steps out the door before she would come running crying "Daddy, don't leave me!" (Hey, I'm not so proud to say that I'd gladly trade abandonment issues for a well-behaved child any day!) As I had always let her know what was expected of her, I never had to remind her when she misbehaved with anything more than just a stern glance which would instantly modify her behavior. When things got too much to where I wanted to spank her, I would tell her I was taking a "Time Out" whereupon she would beg me not to punish myself and that she was the one who deserved to be punished (if Guilt is good enough for the Catholics, then it's good enough for me!). If ever she copped an attitude all I had to do is to say loudly "Oh no you didn't!" followed by counting down (she ran and put her nose on the wall faster than I could count to 3). The only time I ever raised a hand to my daughter, my hand didn't even need to come in contact with her behind before she recanted and cried like a baby. Then again, I never had to resort to actually spanking her because I've been there for her since Day 1 and have remained her steady rock that she can count on. Thankfully, having been there, my opinion means more to her than anything else in the world, and she wouldn't do anything to gain my disapproval. If she hadn't had that luxury of a father to enforce discipline and structure from the beginning, she may have needed a heavier hand in the form of a good spanking. So, I don't judge people who chose to spank as a form of discipline, even if I choose not to. I was even spanked as a child...but not overly so and not abusively so (I didn't face anything tantamount to physical abuse until I got much older and my dad felt the need to "toughen" me up as he feared I was too "sensitive" and "intellectual" and would be torn apart by society. Twisted logic to beat a child, but that was long before the Geeks inherited the Earth so he didn't know any better at the time). ;) Looking back though, I'm sure probably deserved far more spankings than ever I got. Although crime in the past decade has actually been decreasing, the nature of the crimes today are markedly different than in decades past. They are more violent, sadistic, cruel, and sociopathic. There are some that would rather blame these crimes on Movies, Television, Video Games, or the decline of Religion. However, undeniably you can see the same disproportionate rise in single-parent households. Although I have an amazing amount of respect for any woman who is able to go to school/work and raise a family all by herself, the lack of a father, or father-figure, that dispenses discipline and sets and explains the rules and expectations to the child, ultimately causes children to grow up without a clear understanding of how to acclimate themselves within society. Although the extremity of the actions of this child stand out the most upon first read, looking deeper into the story the most prominent absence in this child's life is a fatherly figure who provides discipline which this child is clearly lacking. And before any Femi-nazis jump on my train, let me clarify that a Fatherly figure doesn't have to mean the father. Of course, the biological father has certain advantages that others don't (we have emotional and biological attachment, our child unconsciously recognizes our pheromones and therefore sees us as an extension of themselves, our pheromones scare off other predators, et cetera), however if the biological father is a sorry excuse for a human being, let alone a parent, then there is no need to keep them around. A grandfather or uncle can suffice. A god-father will do in a pinch. Even a female husband will suffice. So long as the person is a positive role-model and stern enough to not cave in to their child's every demand as if they are a Hostage Negotiator every time their child misbehaves, as mothers are prone to do. If they are a strong Alpha willing to take the scrappy child by the nape of the neck and show them some discipline when they get out of line, then that's all you really need. Since Grandma is unable to physically dominate this unruly five year old child, and Mom is either inept, disassociated, or whipped and dominated by her own 5 year old, then what this family truly needs to keep this child from turning into Beelzebub or Asmodeus Incarnate, is to find a fatherly figure or "big brother" who can be there for the long-haul to come in and dispense some tough love, even if it is a heavy handed spank to the tookus.

• Kids learn things from the society. Their up bringing contributes in their behavior in addition to their in born qualities that were inherited from their parents. This is why the kids in Asian countries, where there is a good family unit is still prevailing, behave in a more cultured manner. • @Alexa- Yeah I don't remember being traumatized by the occasional ass kicking either except maybe once when I felt they went too far. I didnt even really think that any of it might even be traumatic until psychologists started suggesting it was traumatizing. I look at my sister's kids who suffer no form of correction like that and quite honestly they are disrepsectful, lazy, un disciplined, and simply do not listen to anyone. I fear for her when they hit their teens if they are like this at 6 and 7. It's like they are afraid to discipline these kids. I remember when my parents went too far with corporal punishment, but I really don't remember when they applied it correctly. And by don't remember I mean, I don't recall it being traumatizing or wrong. At all. Parents are only human and when they went too far, which wasn't often, those were traumatic and did inspire me to think it twice, three times, four times over before spanking my child. However, once I decided a butt popping was called for, it got done. Children are born wild. It is the job of the parents to gentle them. When they decide they just can't bring themselves to dispense physical correction or they'd prefer to influence them politically (using manipulation, kissing their asses, etc.), they and the world ends up later really regretting it. Remember back when your dad would tell you what you could and couldn't do, and when you did what you were told you couldn't do anyways he would tear off his belt and give you an old fashioned whoopin' that you'd never forget? Yeah, well although CPS might frown on that kind of Corporeal Punishment, Child Psychologists tell us that is the precise kind of response children need in order to become well-adjusted members of society. Mothers and Grandmothers can try to fulfill that role sans a Daddy, but sometimes being bigger and badder is necessary when doling out the Tough Love. If ever there were a poster child for why children need their fathers (or a surrogate father) to take an active roll in their life, this child would be it! Question: Why didn't the police arrest the child? A night or two in Juvenile Hall might have scared some sense into this young and aspiring Prince of Darkness.

• Holy shish. Mother needs her bum polished by a hundred boot pops. Little boy needs an immediate attitude adjustment and I mean pronto. First, grandma needs to have the entire house all to herself. Regular at home visits by a nurse and meals on wheels. Yeah, she probably was overly tolerant with her daughter and that mistake is biting her in the ass now. But, she is now elderly and in poor health. That is a very precarious place to be even in America. Daughter must have little boy taken away from her permanently and have her fertility suspended. Little boy must be put into a military boarding school forthwith. He must be assigned to visit nursing homes as a part of his upbringing. He needs an epiphany and the sooner the better. Otherwise, I agree. A future career criminal is in the making and he will very likely start with his own family.

• I wouldn't be surprised if the 5 year old has an undiagnosed medical condition, or at least a condition that's going untreated: autism springs to mind. That said, I don't think Grandma can complain too much about her daughter's parenting skills, afterall, a little math tells us that if you're 21 with a 5 year old kid you have to have been 16 when the kid was born, and maybe 15 when it was conceived. May be this is the norm in W. Virginia, but to the rest of the civilized world it doesn't speak well of Grandma's own parenting skills.

• OMFG! She "can't do anything with him" the hell she can't! Beat his ass with a damn belt! That's one of the things I got when I misbehaved (I would have never even thought of doing what that little turd did). What the hell is wrong with parents these days? Like I've said time and time again, people who have kids either 1)want to be their kids' friends or 2)they don't care about the kids. She had her first kid at 20 (she had been pregnant multiple times before but to her abortion is a type of birth control to use when you don't get what you want), and she wasn't raising him. We gave him the nickname Damien, that wasn't even close to his nickname, but he'd do whatever he pleased. And the first few months that we say him continously he'd leave a path of distruction where ever he went. We asked her why she didn't disipline him, her response "I don't know what to do? He's just so out of control, I can't handle him." So we all told her, if she didn't handle him then we would. The final straw was when he was over at my parent's house and he grabbed one of the table stands and threw it on the ground and started to smash it. We smacked his hand and told him no. He then decided to take our 12 year old chiuaua and throw him against the wall and then stomp on him, so my mom spanked him until his butt was raw and then made him apologize to Milo (the chiuaua) and to my parents for breaking their things and hurting the dog. When my cousin came to pick him up she was mortified when we told her what he did and what we did. She wasn't mad about him doing those things, she was mad that we punished him. But you know what? He never did those things again, he showed actually showed respect after that incident when he was around my parents and do the same with our other relatives. His mom finally started being an actual parent after her third kid, but the point is, someone needs to beat some sense into this woman and then do the same to her kid.

But this 5 yr old didn't just learn to do this crap. Grandmother must of have been a wrong role model for the daughter and now the daughter is a bad role model. this child needs to be removed and placed in a home where he can be properly taught the proper behavior of a growing child. I still think he needs his ass tanned. But he can be taught if he has the right people training him. The mother is useless and will never aspire higher then her couch, tv, computer, food stamps and such. And it has nothing to do with where they live. close your eyes and point out a town/city/state on the US map and there will be another one just like her. she has no self esteem and won't do anything to better herself. and if the grandmother isn't able to correct the situtation in her own home, at 58, then she is just as much responisble for the actions as well. hate to blame any victim. But somewhere down the line, something got a little out of wack. And i actually feel sorry for people like this. people who are unable to pull themselves out of whatever hell they have put themselves into. As a grandmother, it's hard to not be a parent when the parents are not doing their jobs. and most kids (no matter the age) sees this. And if the mother thinks everything is a ok, but then grandma decides it's not a ok. then there is a problem. I dare one of my grandchildren or my children to EVERY raise a hand to me! They will regret it. None was raised to do that. And the 5 yr old spoiled brat we have, will do just that! but won't dare do it to a adult. But i have seen him slap my daughter. And she just sits there going " now now. that wasn't nice. you are not to hit". BS! You hit me, i hit back! plain and simple. To read this story and "see" in my mind a woman (not much older then me) in a wheelchair being hit with canes and cans and ect. And the daughter not doing anything? Not right. Wonder if daughter hit or hits mom as well? wouldn't surprise me.

Also I do agree that the child instead of being considered a fungus and disposed of, should be removed from whatever influences him and placed around positives people before it is too late. At 5, he can still be taught otherwise. As for responsabilities, if it is true that the mother should be held responsible for her child behavior, how was she raised herself to have grown into such an altruistic angel? And by whom? Was she raised by the grand ma? They seem to be living all together. Doesn't the grand ma share some of the responsabilities to raise him too as long as they're under the same roof? Seems like responsabilities go around all the way but no matter what, very complicated...

• Yes being a mother is hard work. Yes kids can be a handfull. I have 2 children of my own and I know they aren't always easy to take care of. However, your job as a mother is too BE A MOTHER! Teach them right from wrong. Teach them compassion. Teach them not to beat and pee on their grandma (or anyone). Some people really shouldn't be allowed to have children. I don't think you should beat the child but if he or she is acting like a little demon, you, as a mother, need to take control and give the child a good spanking or some form of discipline. If one of my son's did that, they wouldn't be able to sit for a week! Fortunatly, I've never had to discipline either of them like that because I've taught them how to behave.
