• in the first place Bcolletta noone care what you are going through. he is an animal that needs to be punished unfortunately they are not seeking the death penalty, like he deserves. Mary was a very sweet girl and even if she had not been she did not deserve the abuse that he put her through, noone does.  He OBVIOUSLY was not taught what love is. because if he ever loved her he would not have wanted to harm her. I feel sorry for your family in that you all need to learn what love really is,  by your post I can tell that you are also not aware of what love really is.

• I have tried very hard to refrain from commenting but it just became too much. I understand that you are trying to protect your cousin from the onslaught of comments on how he should pay for what he did with his life and I know that must be hard for you to hear but honestly.. what do you expect to hear? That people will say he only made a “mistake” and let him off scott free? That people will say he should get a lighter sentence because he was “just jealous”?? I do not care what sentence he gets as long as he pays for what he did to her. The courts will decide how Chris should pay for what he did but ultimately he will have to answer to God for what he did and the last time that I checked it is a major sin to take someones life. At least your family has an opportunity to see Chris in jail and hear his voice and have a conversation with him.. Marys family only has a grave site to visit because he took her away. Try asking Marys beautiful wonderful kids how they feel about it especially on days like tomorrow.. Mothers day.. I can guarantee that they don’t see it as just a mistake.. they see it as a horrible monstrous thing that he did just like the rest of Marys family sees it. You do NOT stab someone repeatedly and leave them in a parking garage on the hottest day of the summer when you “Love” them.. unconditional love means that you would rather die than to see any harm come to someone you love. What he did was cowardly.

• Yes, Briahna, he's going to be judged by society for choosing to beat, terrorize and murder his wife. He may have shown you a different side -- a side he likely at one point showed to this poor woman, which is undoubtedly why she fell in love with and married him. However, the cruelties that people commit must outweigh the 'good' actions they demonstrate (or the intent to act 'good'). His actions weren't bad choices; they were repeated demonstrations of his abusive, controlling personality. He refused to allow her the choice to be out of his life. The murder of Ms. Colletta was his way of 'having the last word'. One of the few times I endorse people to become practiced in the use of firearms, and be prepared to use lethal force -- protective orders don't work with O.J. Simpson type mindsets, and you must kill your abuser/stalker if he accosts you and disregards the piece of paper. He was intent on destroying her.

• Clearly a restraining order or protective order is really only worth the paper it is written on. A truly dangerous person who has already committed extraordinary behavior prior to the order will only be enraged by an outside entity "telling him/her what to do". This creature had no self-control and no respect for the life or happiness of the person he vowed to love and honor for life. He has forfeited his right to be among decent people the moment he raised his hand to her in violence. Now that he has taken her life, he has forfeited that right for good. Too bad his punishment will not be very harsh. For centuries the courts have "dumbed down" sentences against abusive husbands/fathers. If he gets the maximum penalty allowed I will be very surprised!

• It's not that restraining orders are bad or are useless it's the Police who don't take them seriously that are useless. The fact is, if you have a restraining order that is legally binding its' SUPPOSED to show a police officer that if this guy is breaking it that he should be "locked away" as the person who filed it is obviously in fear of their life and/or property. What its' SUPPOSED to do is make Divorce/Seperation/Criminal proceedings go that much smoother and make it easier for COPS to realize when they have someone potentially dangerous in their hands. Unfortunately, cops are generally lazy(generally, not always) and don't give two rats ass over Protective order, they can know EXACTLY where a perp is, be told down to the last beat of step they make and do NOTHING about it. Don't blame the restraining order for this mans' violence, blame him and the Justice System that failed to hold him liable.

• Actually, the August 2 arrest was in 2009, not the day before. Hardly makes a difference, the mother of two small children is now dead, but the facts of this story were inaccurate. This was the most selfish thing he could have done. He was angry because she was already dating other men and he couldn't handle it. So he and to render her two children motherless, his own son fatherless and devastate the lives of others because of this jealousy. Its disgusting.

• I truly agree with J White. Mary was always a very warm and loving person. Such a great mom to her two children! I will always remember the evening that we first met Mary and her daughter. Mary was worried that her daughter would not be accepted at the new dance class because every one had been in class for a while. That was Mary always worried about her children. I will remember that day that she told us that she was expecting her 4 year old. God Bless Mary hope that you didn't suffer a lot. You are loved and will be missed. • The system failed this beautiful, caring, loving women. Mary was a good person. She worked, took care of her family and never hurt anyone. This man who claimed to love her when he married her, does nto deserve to see the light of day. He stalked her, harrassed her, and then waited for her and murdered her. I believe that the punishment needs to fit the crime. He needs to suffer like she did. He needs to have his life taken from him, and not for the TAX PAYERS to pay for. If he sits in jail then her family and friends will pay for him to have his life. That should not be allowed.

• I just wanted to say something about Mary Daniels. A deceased mother of 2 beautiful children. I didn't know Mary very well. I met her a few times when she came into the office & talked to her quite a few times on the phone. There is one thing that I will always remember about Mary. She was always wearing a smile on her face and I could here the smile in her voice when I answered the phone and it was her on the other line. I don't understand how someone could take Mary away from her family and friends. She will be missed greatly. God Bless Mary's family and friends and pray they all get thru this.

If other commenters have been ugly to you at other posts here, then that is most unfortunate and does not speak well of those commenters who did not give you the benefit of the doubt. Be that as it may, new Sandy, until Pete said so, we had no way of knowing for sure. To your larger point, it is something like the point I've been making around here as well: until the victims are given parity with the accused, then we are still Sisyphus. So long as just the accused is given every possible protection and given at least the institutional and largely accepted benefit of being officially considered innocent until proven guilty, then the victims, by default, are treated as if they are the opposite. It is an artificial and callous tension of our own fashion. An Unintended Consequence that no one is fixing.

Interesting how this is a thread for an article on abuse where the woman was not believed even though she continually tried to tell them what was happening, and yet, it was her fault. Had she been believed, they would have done more...I know. It used to be in our society that you were innocent until proven guilty, but that is not the case anymore. • Hey @saint_dismas, I'm wrong. My attack happened nearly ten years ago and so I nearly forgot the name of the hero who came to my rescue that day: Officer Craig Scott. He and his entire crew of fellow officers, the hospital staff who were all so nice to me, and even the prosecutor and the judge. Everyone was absolutely great. Surprise, surprise, my attacker had a history of abusing women that he so conveniently forgot to tell me. Huh, imagine that. We need a lot more people like them. We need a lot more heroes like Officer Scott.

What Alexa suggests for the most severe cases is more than efficient, and one would be better off doing that than relying on legal officials who have proven time and time again that they will do nothing until after the corpse is discovered. This monster killed her out of an obsessive compulsive need to control the object of his desire, who she was as a person meant little, it was the simple fact that she "denied" him that set him off in a rage. (mingled with anger because she put him in jail and likely made him look like a douche in the eyes of family and friends...RIGHTLY SO.) IT's also agreeable that he should Die, and while SOME falsely confess to crimes (as mentioned by one commenter) He was not one of them. Those who falsely confess are either attention seeking morons who want the status of Social Infamy, or guys who are forced into it by eager to convict policemen. (this man was neither, and apparently confessed willingly after turning himself in...no coercion there so...off with his head!) In some crimes of passion where husbands kill wives, or wives kill husbands, the killing is detestable but more understandable on a human level than a crime like this. Cases where there are no indications of prior abuse, in which the guy, or woman walk in on a lover with another lover and shoot/stab them...spontaneous homicides etc. For them I wouldn't be so quick to pass the kill judgement because Sometimes even relatively decent human beings can be pushed (by passion) to commit monstrous acts. There is a difference between a Monster, and someone who does a monstrous thing.....A monster repeatedly does things that senselessly harms, destroys, or kills, with no regard for the lives or life they destroy.(and no guilt or pity for anyone but themselves) I was filled with a certain sorrow ALEXA...whenever I read what you said about No Heroes existing in Real Life. Maybe thats true, or maybe the ones you would consider Heroes are considered vigilantistic nuts by the bleeding heart types? I certainly would'nt condemn a good citizen for doing what the law fails to do. (or is legally restricted to do.) Women are more apt to jump the fence, for a sense of "love", the same love they had early in their marriage, men jump for sex, it too will pass, this new love, if that is what you want, butterflies every few years, jump the fence. Your'e son will learn that women are to be used and you're daughter to use men. You will have completed the circle.

• I would have to put this down to another case of man views women as property. and if it leaves. it is supposedly his right to dispose of it as he sees fit. at least the court order will have on records that he is a danger to her and those she cares about. . @alexa kim I agreee with what to do. but make sure that none of his friends and family know what you are up to. if you have family. make sure they are on your side. some, tend to side with the son-in-law due to religious reasons. that you married him and are supposedly under his thumb now as his property. if there are kids from the marriage. make sure that in the divorce papers that he NEVER harms the kids in any form, including death. be it by his hands, words. as well as he never sets them up to be harmed by someone else either. we have seen too many cases where the ex kills the kids to "get revenge" at the ex for the divorce. even if he was the one who walked out on her.

• Hmmm, I've seen a couple of posts commenting on the victim's looks, as if that is a precursor to being stalked. In reality, people of all walks of life are stalked and this is just another sad example of how the justice system is failing our nation. Both men and women should be aware of their rights and take steps to protect themselves. Get a concealed handgun license and buy a gun. Be proactive in protecting yourself, because the law is often too little, too late.

• this always happens. my little sister had an ex who stalked and threatened her. thank god he never did anything because he knew i would take care of him if i even saw him, but the police were pretty ho hum about it. only one officer pointed out that situations as such turn deadly, but as far as getting them to enforce restraint laws it's like they could care less. This Guy was calling 100 times a day leaving messages, following her and sitting outside her friend's houses, driving by our home at night and she was 17 and he was 22. i think this also comes from dramatic system abusing wolf criers who get a restraining order everytime they have a break up. they system is so effed sometimes.

• Restraining orders only work when there is an actual consiquence to follow breaking it. This is the second story today of a guy breaking a restraining order and getting set free within hours. Unless the justice system shows people that if they break the restraining order there will be harsh punishment then people are just going to laugh at it and it's going to be nothing more then a piece of paper. I was thankful enough that when I got my restraining order he stayed away. I say screw having to make him wait for the death penalty, after all, he's already shown that he doesn't give a damn about paper or court, so let's just skip the appeal process that he'll probably file once convicted and in jail, or we can just skip the trail all together and hang him where he stands. Our justice system needs to actually punish people who break the law because obviously rehabilitation isn't working. If people fear the consequences of breaking the law then they won't do it.

I would change the order around. First, if you do not have a history of pressing charges against him when you've had to call the police to stop him from hurting you more, then now may be the wrong time to start. It could be too dangerous. Don't tell your "man" what you're going to do at all. Telegraph nothing, do not betray yourself to him. Hide money away, make duplicate keys, hide a suitcase with your most important and cherished items, arrange for a place to stay without notice ahead of time, known only to you, keep your cellphone on you at all times. Get a small revolver and keep it loaded with two blanks in the first two chambers, with live ammo in the rest. Tape the holster to your waist under an empire blouse. If I were you, I would not get a CCL. That's just my personal opinion. Why? Because your license is now part of public record. Along with your address. If you do not live in a state where you can carry a gun without a license, such as Arizona, move there. When he is at work, or passed out drunk, or has taken his usual sleeping pill, GET OUT. Don't leave a note, don't say anything to him at all. Leave and never look back. Now, go to a lawyer and ask him to file for a protection order that does not divulge where you now live. Or go to a free law service. Make sure it is not for a short period of time. Make sure you stress how terrified you are of him, how you fear for your life, because you do fear that he will kill you and/or the children to hurt you. If you have children, never, ever allow him to get the children from where you live. He must pick them up at the courthouse or the police department. Never let him have totally unsupervised access to them. Just don't. Because how many cases have we heard of a bitter, twisted man who proceeds to kill his own children in order to spite the wife. (Yes, yes, women have done it too, but the leader in the contest is still the men.) Have your name legally changed, entirely. If you have children, change their names entirely. If, that is, you care to live a life of some peace and tranquility. Otherwise... otherwise, I cannot say out loud what else to consider....

• well first off restraining orders are totally worthless. if somebody really wants to fuck with you, they're going to. how many times has this been seen before that somebody was murdered or attacked by somebody they had a restraining order against? it doesn't deter the crime from happening, it just makes the punishment for the perpetrator worse, and deterrent punishment doesn't decrease crime rates. If this woman, or anybody really, finds themself in a situation like this where they are fearful for their life from somebody then they need to take matters into their own hands to protect themselves. By all means, still file the restraining order so you have a record with the court. All it's going to do for you is possibly help you out in court to show why your self defense was justified. get a conceal and carry license, take a self defense class, surround yourself with friends and family willing to protect you. don't expect the courts to help you or the police to get there in time to save your life from a maniac.
