Maybe it's been the season's merciless heat. Perhaps it's the residual funk of a recession that won't away. Or maybe, just maybe, it's that some Americans are just that uncool toward Hispanic immigrants...

Whatever the explanation(s), the reality is: Mexicans are getting the beat down in Port Richmond, a working class neighborhood on New York's Staten Island.

The first attack happened in April. Twenty-six-year Rodulfo Olmedo, a baker by trade, was exiting a nightclub. He was just steps from his apartment when four men descended upon him.

According to video shot from a nearby security camera, the quartet initially spread out as they approached their chosen spot of attack. One man had a chain draped over his shoulder. Others carried baseball bats and a chunk of wood.

The foursome hid behind a building, waiting to pounce. When Olmedo emerged, they charged him, beat and robbed him of his wallet and cell phone, all while yelling racial slurs.

In the immediate wake of the attack, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn joined a fellow councilwoman at a press conference. They condemned the attack and also implored the citizenry to work with authorities to stave off the possibility of more potential hate crimes.

It appears the bad guys weren't listening.

In the ensuing four months, ten more attacks on Mexican immigrants would follow. In each incident, the victims were pummeled as their attackers hollered anti-Hispanic slurs. Some of those beaten were robbed as well.

The latest attack happened early this past Saturday morning. Christian Vazquez, 18, was heading back to his home in Port Richmond after finishing his shift as a busboy at a Manhattan restaurant. It was around two in the morning.

As the teen was distracted by another Hispanic male, two black men attacked Vazquez from behind, according to law enforcement officials. The attackers repeatedly punched the victim and yelled, "Go home you f---- Mexican!" They also robbed Vazquez of the $10 he had on him.

A 15-year-old of Liberian birth -- who is a naturalized American citizen -- has been charged as a juvenile with felony counts of second-degree robbery, aggravated harassment and third-degree assault.

Days after the incident, Vazquez told news outlets: "If they were after my money, they would have asked for it. They were after me because I was Mexican."

The spate of pre-meditated beatings has brought a boatload of media attention. It has also attracted the attention of Mexico's consul general. Currently, the bustling commercial strip that is Port Richmond Avenue feels more like a locale where marshall law has been issued as legions of police patrol by foot, car and in the sky. Moreover, a pair of collapsible NYPD towers are on location.

Including Vazquez's alleged assailant, a total of seven young men have been arrested in connection with the beatings. Two have pleaded guilty to robbery in two of the assaults while a third case is pending. However, a grand jury failed to indict any of those arrested on hate-crime charges.

According to interviews with residents, a bunker mentality has set in. They worry about what will happen after the headlines stop and the cops en masse are no longer deployed in the area.

Whatever forces are driving the rash of what appear to be racially-motivated attacks -- could it just be stupid people? -- the Reverend Dr. Tony Baker, pastor of St. Philip's Baptist Church, told The New York Times: "I think we've gone to sleep on the conditions we find ourselves in. And we woke up in the midst of a racial war."
