Nerd Alert: When Nefarious Geeks Turn to Crime

You know them as those lovable, unassuming guys who are strangely into comic books and action figures while simultaneously being way smarter than the rest of us. But when geeks turn to crime, it all becomes very, very weird. TruTV has the story.

*sighs* The sad thing is is that the glorification of these psychos' will make the rest of us gamers look like much of the same. There are few who step back and realize that every group has people like this. There were a few funny ones' though, the first just gave me a what the and the one about the police arresting the two gamers playing Rainbow Six was classic, then, that game HAS been touted as having some of the most realistic sound-effects(no actual joke, its' been praised for how real the bullets sound). Poor blokes, this is why Surround Sound is not always the best. As for Online Communities, there is nothing inherently *wrong* with them but just like anywhere there are always going to be creeps, if you start virtual relationships fine but don't get heavy and serious with it, don't invest so much of yourself into a relationship that is obviously fake, realize its' just another aspect of role-playing and though I can't say I've done it personally I CAN see how it can easily get out of hand. With Online Gaming you *do* have to be careful about what information you put out there, just like anyone else. The fact is, if you don't *know* the person then you can't really ever afford to give out personal information, and, as I said above, role-play and remember that while you're doing so, you shouldn't be expected to give out actual info because REAL role-players wouldn't want to give it out themselves if their in the midst of things. If, on the other hand, you DO get to know someone fairly well you should be careful about how and when and with what you contact a person with, especially if you're under the age or are otherwise unable to take care of yourself, there ARE relationships, healthy ones, that have come from online gaming(not just sexual or bf/gf but friendships) and there's nothing wrong with wanting to meet someone but always do so carefully and with other friends and family at your side and in public places, at least until you really get to know that person. On a personal level, i've made plenty of real life friendships over online gaming, some of them still flourishing today, despite the fears they really aren't cesspools of creeps and wannabe criminals.
