Nicholas Pinto, Beaten Into Coma, Shows What Life Is Like for a Child Pornographer Behind Bars

In 2008, Nicolas Pinto was arrested on federal charges of taking explicit photos and videos of children. He subsequently pleaded guilty, and was supposed to be sentenced in October. But due to the glacial wheels of justice, he's spent the last two years in jail...

And while everyone knows that child porn offenders aren't treated well by fellow inmates, his case shows exactly how brutal life behind bars can be.

He was incarcerated at the Lackawanna County Prison in Scranton, Pennsylvania. From the beginning, he began keeping a diary on his treatment. Fellow inmates and a prison priest back up his tales of vicious abuse.

In his diary, Pinto wrote that guards would make him stand naked in his cell for days on end and chant "kill yourself" over the prison PA system. A fellow inmate says guards would stomp on Pinto's bare toes, parade him naked around common areas, smack him in the head and throw his food in the garbage. The inmate also said that Pinto would be released from his cell with other inmates, then guards would announce over the PA system, "Go get 'em, boys."

Pinto's diary says he was routinely raped by another inmate he called "the silverback."

"First night is bleeding but no penetration," he wrote. "The next night is full-on jailhouse Bubba."

He reported the rapes to guards, but no one would investigate, says Father William Pickard, the prison chaplain. That led to further rapes, after which the guards refused Pinto medical treatment.

But after Father Pickard complained, he too was banned from the prison after allegedly pushing a guard who refused to let him see Pinto. The priest says the pushing incident never happened.

Without an investigation or any help from guards, Pinto was a marked man. On August 8, he was ambushed by a violent inmate who was supposed to be on lockdown. The man jumped Pinto from behind and stomped on his head with all his strength an estimated 15 times. Then the man returned to his cell to clean the blood off his shoes.

Pinto's face was shattered and he suffered severe brain injuries that left him in a coma.

It's unclear how much of the abuse was officially sanctioned by prison guards. But since we often like to talk about abusing sex offenders in the comments section, it's interesting to see how people view it now after being provided with the grisly details.

So we ask you, dear reader: Did Nicholas Pinto get the treatment he deserved? Or should we still be looking out for the safety of sex offenders, regardless of their crimes?

I thought Cook County Jail in Chicago was BAD. Pennsylvania jails guards should be fired and sued for brutality. I as a female on a minor conviction would most likeley be raped by a corrupt guard. This facility should be CLOSED!!!!
When authority does not enforce justice They fall victim to criminals . we are either civil human beings or we are animals no in between. the difference is thinking it wanting it but not doing it. the guards are clearly wrong and need counseling and retraining .they are not judges but hired to upheld the laws they swore to obey?

Its really hard to feel for someone who has admitted guilt-not been falsely convicted-I can't believe how many people in the comments have used the "what if he was innocent" strawman argument with this guy. read the damn articles about the guy. HE DID IT-and he went to jail-a place where they HATE pedophiles and he got his head kicked in. Prison is its own world-its not bound by the same rules we live with out in mainstream society. therapy doesn't work for pedophiles-locking them up seems to be the only way to contain them.

I believe the problem here is our society's acceptance of fags and fag sex. Men aren't good enough anymore, and now the fags are targeting young boys instead. It doesn't help that our president is a world-famous fag pimp, so this problem will only get worse. I don't understand how people can accept them, they take it up the ass! When you take a defenseless child's innocsense in the sick ways he did. I know it isnt homocide, but he did kill something inside those children. For the rest of their lives they will be affected by this. They've been brutally traumatized. with all the mental damage that he did, those girls have a slim chance of having the lives they had always hoped for. He's a sick man. If there is a chance of him being released one day, I would feel alot better knowing what it is like to be the helpless man. I hope he had the same fear in his heart that those children did when he was abusing them. Without extreme punishments like this, child molestation cases will never drop.
@Caty.....in most cases, the FBI have been following parasites like Pinto here. . like my ex. I found out after I found out and turned him in. that the FBI had been keeping a eye on him for several months before that.
Thank you Di. <3 It's a tough thing to deal with when you find out your friend has done something like this. I do not condone his behaviour in any way, shape, or form, but no one wants something like this for a friend. I think it's pretty sad that there are so many people out there who are so thirsty for blood. What if this was your childhood friend? Would you be so quick to say all the nasty, mean-spirited things and wish more negativity on an already negative situation? I'm sure someone somewhere can understand that the family is going through enough at the moment and doesn't need to hear/read people saying these awful things. In addition to many, I was also a victim of child abuse and I understand where the hostility comes from, but the universe will take care of whatever needs to be taken care of. I may not agree with what happened, but my heart still breaks for his family who are some of the best people I've had the privilege to know.
I know Nick Pinto...Grew up w/ him in Stratford...Was even in my home a week or so before he was jailed...we were friends...while he was the awkward geek that no one really interacted w/ in high school...i would write him notes, talk on the phone, shared interests...that said...i'm also a survivor of child abuse...the is as personal as it gets...so my opinion...there is true karma in this world...if only so many other victims could get justice equivalent to the crime...abuse of this nature takes away more than just that moment...life has a way of playing out...but physics teaches us that to every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction...any joy he got, he now has in pain...i just pray for his parents...God knows, I know, they did not do anything to have florished this hell on earth...
@rose and @steve: I am not defending the actions of this man. I am also not justifying the actions of those guards. As I said, I am more acquainted than anyone should ever have to be with the effects of abuse upon a child or adult. I also know that when *any* person is allowed to get away with criminal behavior it is easy for them to repeat that behavior again and again. Maybe this person "deserved" a beating. What bothers me is that if allowed to continue eventually a person who is unjustly accused may fall victim to the same punishment. Pete Kotz posted an article about a teacher accused of molestation by a pupil who later admitted she made up the whole thing for revenge. Three kids in Maryland did the same to one of their male teachers when I was living in the area. I would say most abused kids DON'T tell, and most allegations are true. I don't want anyone to get away with abuse. At one time I would have dearly loved to exact some vengeance upon people in my past. Honestly, I probably wouldn't have cared if a couple of innocent people were harmed while trying to get to the people I really wanted. I was just that angry, bitter and vengeful. After many years of struggle and heartbreak I know that the only thing it got me was health problems and years of an unfulfilled life. Punish the abusers, sentence them *appropriately* (to me that means life sentences, they are not fit for society). After that we should focus our attention upon helping the victims and preventing future acts. I keep in mind that these correctional officers and other prisoners will likely get out of jail one day, and I don't want them to be in a (continued) mindset of thinking they can beat, maim and kill when they have judged it necessary. What stops them from doing the same to other people who make them feel aggravated or disrespected? Nothing at all. @rose: I don't want to slap you, despite your propensity for violence. A heart warming account of justice - yet it should not take violent criminals to show the way - society and authority need to grow a pair and child muderers and rapists should be executed once found guilty beyond reasonable doubt (with forensics these days not hard to do) ps The raping in jails that occurs I suspect is mainly for the gratuity of other sickfucks instead of justice and as for the fact they do it to a child abuser is just some pathetic excuse to practice man love ha ha
If you want the death penalty for child pornography, go get that through the legislature. I don't really care much either way. But having a prison system that condones rape, violence, and murder based on the opinions and views of criminals is not acceptable. The same people that rape and beat up this guy may do the same to someone else simply because they don't like their accent, religion, or ethnicity. And when they come out of prison (and many of them do), the same people that practice vigilanti justice there will think it's OK to do it outside too. We do not want criminals or guards to decide who lives or dies. It is morally and legally unacceptable, and it is dangerous.

The chances of these people being innocent is zero. If wanting justice for children is being a monster so be it. Around noon on August 7, 1996, Christopher had asked his mother if he could go for a bicycle ride to the city park. Mika Moulton told Christopher he could go, but he had to be back by 4:30 pm. Christopher said he would be home on time and rode off. That was the last time his mother saw him alive. Searches for the boy failed. Many thought he might have fallen into the river and had been swept downstream in the fast moving currant and drowned. Each day, the searchers found pieces of the boy's clothing. First, pieces of his shirt, then pieces of his pants, his underwear and then finally his bicycle was found across the river. By now law enforcement officers, his family and everyone searching knew something terrible had happened to Christopher. The boy's body was found a week later. Within days a suspect was rounded up. It was Timothy Buss. A man who had grown up in the area but had been gone for a long time. He had been in prison for murdering five-year old Tara Sue Huffman in Bradley, Illinois in 1981. Buss was 14 years old at the time and was tried as an adult. He had been found guilty and sentenced to 25 years in prison. In 1993, Buss had been paroled after serving 12 years of the 25-year sentence. He had been living in Florida but had moved back to Aroma Park in May of 1995. He had been back in the area for three months and no one, not even the police knew he was in town. Buss was found guilty of killing young Christopher Meyer and this time sentenced to death.
Yes Steve, and some of those men were convicted of rapes, including those of children, and later they were found innocent. Based upon information found later, but at the time, the proof was there to condemn them. Using your logic, those men, found guilty of heinous murder would have met the same fate as this man. I am not prepared to take that risk and I am not prepared to sacrifice my humanity to satisfy some primal urge. I will not sanction officers who are sworn to uphold the law to participate in torture. I can't expect better of prisoners, perhaps, but those officers I do expect more of. This is a horrible despicable crime, and I know better than you can imagine what harm these monsters cause. This is more a case of the mentall illnesses of the guards than treatment pedophiles get. Obviously these guards belong behind bars more so than this person. If he were to get "an for an eye" then his punishment for photographing children naked should have been to be photographed naked by senior citizen pedophiles. As for the guards, we must really lower our expectations of the sub group "males" in our population. They are responsible for torturing, killing and raping not just other people, but also animals, on a daily basis (frogs & horsies seem to be popular this week) since the beginning of time until today, starting with Cain & Able & ending with whatever is on the news tonight. Are you willing to look the family of a wrongfully accused person who is stomped to death while in jail and say: Well, we thought he was guilty, so we let the guards torture him and it was play time for the inmates but...sorry, my bad. Are you really willing to take responsibility for that? Would you have been willing to say that to the family of the teacher who was wrongfully accused, then the girl later admitted she made the whole thing up?? That was on this site justt in the past week. His career and finances are devastated. If his life and health had been taken that would have been worse. If you are seriously willing to do that, then I guess what happened in this story is okay to you. I understand most people making these wild claims of "what I would do" are simply venting. If you are SERIOUSLY able to consider allowing this behavior in corrections officers, wardens and prisoners, or if you SERIOUSLY think you can do this yourself in order to get to someone you believe is guilty and are willing to take the risk of possibly harming someone who isn't you are probably a person who has criminal tendencies and people should be afraid of you too. There is a reason for courts and investigators. They are fallible, but I trust them and their skills to find and punish the perpetrators of these crimes a heck of a lot more than vigilantes with a crazy axe to grind.
In 99.??% of cases, when the person is found guilty, their guilty. This shit-bag was guilty. Should he have been beaten? Who knows? If it wasn't meant to be he, won't have had his head stomped in. @Sangelia: I am sure that most of these guys are very well investigated before they go to jail. But I am just saying that the guards getting in on this and promoting it is just not right. Just recently there was a man on this site who was exonerated after a girl admitted she lied about accusing him of assaulting him. He lost his job, his home...what if her lie had cost his life while he was in jail? Not acceptable. I just don't believe that if what is portrayed in that diary and witness accounts is true it should have been allowed to happen or promoted by the corrections officers. Not that I think these creatures should have any mercy from the justice system, but it is not justice for the guards to assist in torture. This is not part of our system of punishment and people cannot be allowed to make up this crap as they go along. If the death penalty was a choice for child molestation/pornography, then try convict and sentence them to that. Letting violent criminals toy with other prisoners is just plain wrong. Having guards join in is doubly wrong.

@Caty at least in my ex's case. the FBI had been tracking him for some time before I found out about my ex. they do this to make as solid as possible of the case. one mistake and all that time going after the pedophile ends up going to waste. therefore they have to make sure they are after the correct one. since then, I've found out how they do it. also, if there is someone else in the parasite's life. they too get investigated. to make sure that they are not part of the filth. as in when after I turned in my ex. my ex made the claim that I supposedly did it. not only to his family. but from what I remember, to the FBI as well. thing is, the FBI investigated my work place as in what days did I work. what days did I not work. as well as what hours too. as well as several other things. and compared that against the growing case against my ex. during the trial. I found out the main times that my ex did most of his stuff on the computer.

As bad as this creature is, this story makes me nauseated. Just to play the devil's advocate, what if he was falsely accused, or if he had made a false confession. This could be someone innocent. People can and do admit to crimes they did not commit. For that reason ONLY I cannot condone what happened. Prison for life, yes. Isolation from others, yes. Not one tiny sliver of comfort or pleasure for the rest of his life, yes. Systematic torture, no. For nothing else than the fact that this gave people way too much "fun" and for that reason, when these creatures do get out of jail...they are USED TO THIS BEHAVIOR. They know that they derive pleasure from the agony of another living creature.. They will enjoy this. People in prison do not have the best reason or impulse control. So how about they think they have been done wrong and have the identity incorrect. They may come across one of us, and if they are "in the mood" or "feel like" you deserve it, who knows what may happen. That scares me very much.

Ok, I am one of the parents of the children he did this to. It happened at my home, in my basement while i and my husband were sleeping. I grew up with nick, we were very best friends for fourteen years. this has broken my home, my heart, i lost my apt, i was run out of town because everyone blamed me for letting him stay there. i just didn't know, as i had NEVER seen him with children before. I lost my foster son, i loved him more than my own life. I haveing personally been through this, the cops in my home, the fbi in my home, having to go to court, having to explain to the families.. to know that if i hadn't been his friend, this never would have happened to the people i love. I still, think that what he got, was excessive. Too excessive. I know in my heart of hearts, he didn't deserve all that, and i know that his sister, his mother and his father are all hurting, deeply... and they too didnt need this. they are good people. i am the one who told his mother what he did, she was in so much pain i cant describe... and then to get a call that he is in a coma?? that poor woman, my heart goes out to her. and to his sister. they are all, despite this, in my prayers.
you know, being in prison itself is not much of a punishment for the types of crimes people do like rape and murder so I think it's awesome he got special treatment from everyone for being a pedo, now that's punishment
@ Someone who actually knew him.: I was repeatedly assaulted as a child by a man in my neighborhood. I never told anyone, he said he would kill my mother and baby brother if I did. It went on for a long time. For years I have carried the burden and the consequences led to me having a seriously messed up life for a long time. I eventually decided that I would only get even if I lived a good life DESPITE the trauma I experienced. If you expect me to feel sorry for your friend's "illness" you are out of luck. I did not feel one bit sorry for him. He had the choice to do right and wrong, and by your own words he KNEW that he was committing vile acts. If he did not know the difference between right and wrong, he would be mentally ill. He knew the difference, he is not ill, he is a cowardly predator. That being said, I cannot condone any law enforcement official standing idly by and allowing that to happen. If your friend had been in there on false charges, set up, someone lied about the circumstances, the same thing could have happened and an innocent person could be lying in a coma right now. For that reason ONLY, I do not agree with what happened. Innocent people end up in jail all the time. I would be very upset if this kind of treatment were given to a person with false charges, and since we can never be 100% certain, anyone in jail should be protected from corrupt guards and outright prisoner on prisoner assault. I do feel bad for his parents if they did not play an active part of whatever sad tale you say is part of his past.
I actually knew Nick. In person. Not like you people. Yes, he was a supercreep. Yes, he was sick in the head. But he did not deserve this. He tried every single thing he could to deny his attraction to kids and avoid ending up like this (I have known Nick for about as long as I've been alive), and here he is, sad to say. As a person, Nick was a very kind individual, and the good things he did in his life he will always be regarded fondly for. But he had some pretty massive demons, and this was by far the worst. It's the saddest thing that it overcame him in the end - everyone back here who knew him heard and was sorry that he ended up this way. And now, everyone will only remember him for the bad stuff he did. It's utterly terrible that he has been reduced to such a narrow profile of 'that fucking sick child molester'. Tell me, where in this does it actually say that he raped any kid? Clearly, many of the people writing in this comments section have no reading comprehension. Please go back to third grade. What I'm trying to say is don't pass judgement unless you know every single damn detail of WHO the person is. All you people know is that he's a child pornographer. It never said he molested kids (although allegedly he did. Was charged on it when he was back in CT, but the case resulted in three hung juries and he was never convicted and the evidence was completely nonexistant on one of the cases) As for his "POS" family, his family is one of the nicest and kind families in the world, exhausted everything they could to keep him out of trouble and did a shit ton for him when he ended up in it. There is ABSOLUTELY no circumstance when rape, torture, and attempted murder is acceptable NONE THE LESS promotable. These acts violate numerous domestic and international laws, and not to mention the most basic moral principles of society. Condemning one's acts and then encouraging for those acts to be committed on that individual is primitive and juvenile, and at the end of the day does not make the world a better place. It instead contributes to these acts reoccurring in the future. Stop focusing on the perpetrator and think about what IS BEST FOR THE VICTIM. The victim is not going to be able to work through his pain because his perpetrator was raped, tortured and nearly killed in prison. What will help the victim is what we call restorative justice. Kristin, you're right on. The Guards were out of line but as a past victim of sexual abuse as a child I have absolutely no compassion for anything that happens to these sick fucks. People like him dont deserve the protections that our legal system provides, their victims surely didn't get that protection. I have multiple close friends who are child molestation victims and without any shadow of a doubt I can say that this man deserved every ounce of what he was given and more. While a man who murders another man, or one who steals, or one who destroys must often be proven in motive, that luxury is fortunately denied in the eyes of the public to rapists in general. These kind of cases are generally easy to prove and my guess is (but I don't know for a fact) as he plead guilty, he probably took a plea bargain (right?). Our prisons hold many, many inmates who have been wrongfully convicted. Prosecutors force witnesses to perjure themselves, eye witness identification is not reliable, many plead guilty to crimes they did not commit to avoid longer sentences should they be found guilty. I could go on, but I won't. What was done to this man was wrong by any measure. Anyone who applauds the torture of another human or an animal might well deserve to be imprisoned. What he did was evil and wrong. What was done to him was evil and wrong.
We are still supposed to be a nation of laws. This is a travesty of justice. Our system is designed to punish this type of perverts, it is not the privilege of the inmates nor the job of the COs to do so. The inmates involved should be prosecuted. The COs should be fired and prosecuted. Spending years and years in prison should have been his punishment. How can we condone this and yet decry his crime? I gotta think that a large percentage of people in prison got there, in part, because at some point in their past, someone they trusted, abused them. In prison, anyone involved with harming a child, is a target for this reason. They are usually kept away from the general population. And I question why the 'victim' was keeping a diary to tell us "his story." Was he going to publish a book? Maybe this was 'a set up' and he taunted the other inmate to assault him, so he could get out of that hell hole and away from being butt raped every night? I mean think about this... I am sure he is glad he is in the infirmary and not being butt raped every night. Even if it means a coma for a while. Seriously. Think about it. What would you do to stop that kind of nightmare he was living in? And would you do it, if it include getting the every living shit stomped out of you? Maybe.

hey Dylan-yes that's so, and furthermore these individuals with whom I no longer associate would go so far as to get arrested at precisely the exact time of year so as not to be on the outside of the wall when the cold weather hit. They came from good families, were not admitting to any abuse as children but wanted simply to "run wild" and then head back behind the wall to live "the easy life" I am not kidding you in the least. These weren't violent offenders, nothing like that. Nothing to do with children, just auto theft, residential burglary that kind of stuff. I do not have a distorted couple of "friends" these guys were part of a very large group of men that chose to live their lives this way.

Beyond this, Sexual offenders' are very touchy cases as too often such things become an impulse and without proper care and understanding the repitition can skyrocket. I think it is incredibly ignorant to condone this behavior and be of the mind that they "get what's coming to them". Most people in prison, not just sex offenders, are going to get out at some point--beating and humiliating inmates isn't doing us on the outside any favors when their time for parole comes. When ex-convicts come back out into the community and re-offend, everyone is all shocked and surprised and angry that prison didn't rehabilitate them. Well, go figure! Torturing an inmate only teaches them that society doesn't give two cents about them and creates resentment. By the time the inmate gets out of prison, he has no respect for society as a whole and no reason to abide by society's laws. By condoning or encouraging these actions by other inmates and especially guards, you're basically giving the middle finger to any future victims of the tortured inmate, who is no doubt more violent and less likely to be deterred by empathy for others. Yes, sex offenders will re-offend once they're out of prison and there is no rehabilitation for them, but use your brain; if a sex offender goes to prison and is beaten, raped, and tortured, don't you think that he's going to come back out of prison worse than when he originally went in. By worse, I mean more violent and angry. In turn, don't you think this more violent sex-offender is going to take out his anger on his new victims? Sometimes what you want for these people isn't what's best for everyone else.
It's true that he pleaded guilty and so we an assume he was, but the law tells us not to make that assumption. I'm not saying I have any doubt in a case where someone is caught in possession of child pornography, especially if their voice or face can be heard/seen, in which case they were obviously producing it (I missed that fact that someone else pointed out). In other cases, though, like child molestation, someone can end up pleading guilty as part of a plea bargain, and that's where it becomes problematic to make any assumptions. But ultimately, it sounds like he still hadn't day in court. At the very least, I could feel the slightest bit better if the beat down occurred after he'd had some actual government sanctioned justice resolved. It's a little easier to swallow if he's had his due process. The only other thing I want to say is, contrary to what some are suggesting here, denouncing the barbarism of the guards possibly being complicit, and beating a guy into a coma when he's already living in hell, it isn't really the same to me as showing compassion as much as not supporting the mob mentality and vigilantism. Those things are far too dangerous to me. That's how innocent people end up lynched, or people with the wrong skin color whose crimes are less severe than his. And as a society, I hope we are moving away from that. That is why we have courts and prosecutions to include prison time, but he never got his sentence, and the system isn't supposed to operate like that. If it was, we might as well stone people do death without a trial. At some point, we ought to be able to leave it up to jurisprudence to make the decision about what punishment is appropriate, and again, being beaten into a coma isn't part of it, it's the worst case scenario that we don't need to go out our way to ensure is going to happen, nor do we need to celebrate it. I don't want to be the executioner any more than I want to be the warden. I respect someone else's hard, stressful work in having to do those things, but they ought to be doing them above board to the greatest degree possible while keeping the peace in their positions.

@ Dave the Slave: I highly doubt he would have gotten off scot free... if anything he would have been given what he deserves and what he did get was not what he deserved. It's great to see that the people who are cheering for this guys ass-kicking are most likely the same people that are complaining that we have to pay for this guys care. I guess thats Karma in the best way possible! @ Richard I can name a good few that were charged and forced to plea guilty of the same crime even though they had full proof that they did nothing of the sort, what about those people? do they deserve the same treatment?
None of the other assailants will probably be identified or punished. They'll be out in a few years and free to inflict the same kind of destruction in society, having had those destructive impulses reinforced in prison. The other thing I'd be concerned about is the very likely possibility that corrupt prison guards are using these kinds of tactics to abuse other prisoners for their own purposes, perhaps to coerce them into providing favors for not being turned over to the mobs. Who's to say that they won't intentionally flag other prisoners who aren't pedophiles or rapists just so they can control them.
If he ever recovers he should received the same fate again and again. That's still too good for a child molester.
It's terrible to think that this poor guy got blood on his shoes! Haha! He got exactly what he desereved. Maybe not enough in my opinion. All sex offenders should be put to death by inmates! Name one child molester especially who came out of prison never to do it again. They are a waste of life. What do we normally due to damaged goods? Throw them away right? So screw them... Why do we waste our tax dollars feeding and housing them. They get less time than some drug offenders. Absolutely rediculous! I have no pity what so ever. They should give the guy responsible a medal! I have 3 kids of my own and no cop in the world would be able to stop me from getting to any waste of life that ever layed eyes on one of my kids! Kids are pure and innocent! It should be kept that way! I give the attacker props!
I think he got off easy compared to what I would have unleashed on him, If it were up to me! Children are so pure and innocent and that should be held sacred to all. I have 3 kids and you can bet, there would be no cop in the world that could keep me from getting vengeance on a scumbag who ever layed eyes on my kids. I have no remorse or feeling except pure hate towards anyone who would hurt a child. I dont think they should be given anything less than the death penalty. Show me one pervert that committed a sex crime and came out of prison never to due it again. Damaged goods are usually destroyed aren't they?

I really wanted to work since 11 (cotton field/cotten mill and babysitting) until i am way pass retirement so that i can't enjoy any freedom of my life! Much appreciated. Wont be any Social Security for me or anyone else my age for retirement. We will be paying for the expensive medical treatments this scum gets. Oh and BTW... asshole wasn't even sentenced yet! So know one knows how long he would have gotten in jail. Except the 2 years he has already served waiting to be sentenced. Great justice system we have.
