Before making the two-hour drive, they stopped at a Love's truck stop. That's where they ran into Gary Don Carner.
Only 10 minutes earlier, he tried to kidnap another woman from a convenience store a half-mile away. But the woman escaped. Still, Carner was set on grabbing any female that day, so this time he decided pick someone he presumed would be easier, 11 year-old Cassidy.

That's when Sharrel jumped into the fray, telling Carner to let her granddaughter go. Carner pointed the gun at Sharrel, threatening to shoot her. But grandma wasn't about to back off the shitbag, armed or not.
She went at Carner, trying to pull her daughter free. Cassidy managed to escape his grasp. but Sharrel was shot in the lung.
Cassidy was able to run to her 16-year-old brother Dylan, who pulled her into the store. Foiled once again, Carner took off.
But he seemed possessed by the idea of kidnapping someone that day. Only 10 minutes later, he grabbed another 11-year-old girl who was walking along a road with her friend. He forced the girl into his truck and began driving away. But by this time, a police alert had been sent out for Carner.
The girl saw deputies following the truck and jumped out. Carner opened fire on the cops. The cops shot back, and they had better aim. Carner was dead after three kidnapping attempts in less than a half-hour.
So, tragically, was Sharrel Blankenbaker, who died from her wounds while saving Cassidy. (Special thanks to reader Moet for the tip.)
