• My daddy used to tell me all the time "never start a fight with someone with nothing left to lose". I used to think that my father was infinitely wise until I discovered he was just paraphrasing Sun-Tzu ("If you go after your enemy so strongly that they have no choice but to fight to the death, they will be the toughest enemy to defeat. Such an enemy will fight to the death as they have nothing to lose."). When someone is at the end of their life, can't afford the rising cost of health-care on their fixed Social Security income, and their children have forsaken them to a retirement home in Tampa, then they really have nothing left to lose. Anyone with half a brain recognizes they seriously better sound a retreat if they know what is good for them! Besides, criminals by their nature tend to be big bullies (which the word "bully" can be interchanged with the word "pussy"). All it takes is standing up to one without fear to make them back down. They can dish it out but rare are the criminals who can take it. If they weren't such cowards they wouldn't be committing crimes. Kudos to the old geezer with balls of steel! Take no gruff from any one, old man! Kudos even go to the cowardly criminal for knowing his Sun-Tzu.

• @cw then get a walking staff right now. and get used to it. as well, if you do not know how to fight with a staff, learn. it is easy. but do remember, bruising is part of learning. both the giving and the getting. ...remembers the dinner plate sized one from the end of a staff placed rather hard one sparring session year ago...

• nice thing about needing a cane to walk with. at least if you know how defend yourself. it is one good weapon to have. same thing with the broom. most folks do not recognize that they can be dangerous in the right hands and with the correct knowledge on how to use them as a staff weapon. one gal did not think that a broom was dangerous. till she had me show her as a demostration. I pulled/stopped the broom just short of hitting her on the neck, about 3 inches away. in a spot that would have done serious damage. . @cw best to be wanting to be a healthy person that does NOT need a handicapped device when you are older. many who are with canes. tend to be in pain alot due to the body is no longer healthy.

I have an elderly neighbor and anytime I come out of my office and am anywhere near the property line of our lawns -- doesn't matter the time she comes out and pretends to be working - once she swept her walk in the dark. God help the fool who attempts to be on her lawn - she'd be all over them with her broom. I stay on my side of the lawn. I know better.

• Couldn't tell if robber actually displayed a weapon but generally not a good idea to challenge any robber with a gun.
