Video: Rolando Mendoza, Fired Police Captain, Shoots it Out With Police; 9 Hostages Killed

He took over a tourist bus with 25 hostages in the Philippines. By the time it was all over, nine hostages were dead with another eight in the hospital. Mendozo was killed when police stormed the bus with tear gas and flash grenades...

They did have a few chances Tim thats true, but they were trying to resolve matters peacefully. He didn't really start going off until he saw his brother being led away in handcuffs, and by then it was too late because he was back inside the bus.(and the bus had covered windows.) Shooting from the front or back of it could have potentially killed a civilian, so they likely didn't want to chance that. It's hard to judge situations like this, and everyone involved had a mixture of adrenaline, and fear running through them that amplified their already strained nerves. I've heard others criticize that the hostage negotiators involved screwed up, but the thing is, whenever something like a hostage situation occurs, all sides of the equation instantly start in with blame games, and that does nothing to bring the victims back. (nothing brings them back.) The only Villain in all of this is the Gunman who took innocent lives because he couldn't handle the rejection of being fired from his job. (and he was fired a year ago, so that tells me the man had a very long time to stew and brew before the inevitable attack.)People should be more understanding, and realize the unpredictable Nature of Hostage situations, while also realizing that those men on video were acting out of a Heroes Desperation to save the Innocent. I'm sure if those men had their choice in the matter, all victims would have went home. SO for better or worse they did their job.
This was handled VERY VERY badly, no one but the shooter needed to die. The cops had LOTS of opportunity to snipe him, but instead chose to perform a utterly inept storming of the bus.
Though some of the hostages perished, many of them were rescued. It is always a difficult call when a hostage situation presents with such complex logistics and circumstances. The ex-policeman clearly thought it out how to frustrate the usual police tactics so he could keep control for as long as possible. While there should always be a review of the events to see how to improve police procedures, unless they do something wreckless that needlessly (needlessly) risks innocent lives in order to save innocent lives, the police are on the front lines trying to protect us. That is an enormously difficult job that too few of us openly appreciate. My heart goes out to the families who lost loved ones there, and I hope the wounded will achieve full recovery.
Thank you for adding this Pete, I was talking to a friend of mine in the Philippines who lives in Manila right after this happened, and she was very devastated. There are some who speculate the police didn't handle it right, but I don't have enough info to make an opinion myself. Usually when something like this goes down suicide, or death by Cop is an end game strategy for the gunmen. This particular gunner was demanding his reinstatement to the police force, but unless he's completely deluded he should have known it wasn't going to end that way. Other news reports indicate that the man went off after he saw his brother (grigorio mendoza) another officer, being led away in handcuffs. Apparently he was arrested because the police say he was instigating his brother instead of trying to calm him down. (both the brother and his family deny the allegations though.)
