• a few years ago i watched a man come into walmart grab a tv off the shelf put it in the cart and walk right out the front door and noone said anything. a per the police in my area as long as the store gets the item back theres no reson to arrest them because they will get time served and court cost and nothing eles so many stores just tresspass them.

• So the shoplifter isn't a petty criminal, he's a violent criminal? See, the thief should have stopped, reconsidered his life of crime, gone back to the store, and turned himself in. I know, we don't expect criminals to stop themselves, but we should. Now we need to prosecute someone who harmed another when he could have stopped himself at any moment from committing either crime. Every time we just stare at crime rather than get pissed off at the criminal for reducing our quality of life, we allow another tear in the fabric of our society.

• Having worked retail, they tell us not to leave the store or try playing hero when you encounter shoplifters. You're obviously not getting paid enough and its not they are stealing your personal belongings. So he should've just gotten the plate number and kept it moving. That's his own dumbass fault. Is he gonna get paid time off? Is he going to receive any type of hero payments from Wal-Mart? If not, then lol. Nice hit.

• Insurance for theft ALWAYS costs more than what you get back for claims. I don't care if you're Walmart or Nordstrom's you pay more for insurance. And there's that little matter of deductible...that's out of pocket. No shoplifting doesn't much affect profits...what it affects is prices...prices paid by shopper; you know...people like you and me. What I find baffling is the people that think the store should just allow shoplifting as a cost of doing business. It's the same mentality that tells people that if they hear a burglar they should just let him take what he wants. Higher tolerance for crime begets more crime. Stores don't want their employees fighting shoplifters (generally) but they do want them to check suspicious people. The store employee simply walked outside...he didn't start trying to wrestle with the thieves.

• Yet the problem here is not necessarily the shoplifting but the Danger that Wal-Mart places on its' employees by "suggesting" they put a handle on shoplifting themselves, the encourage Security(note, Private, not Security Officers) to do much of the same. Yes, Wal-Mart see's losses just as any other store does but this is why they have INSURANCE for those products, all they show us is the actual loss of the item. Case in point on insurance with a leading story. Have any of you ever gone to Defcon? Hackers' convention that even the FBI/CIA/Secret Service attends filled to the brim with all kinds of hackers and geeks and other various lovely bunches. They have a bit of a..."Good" time when they are there, I should say, they almost completely TRASH the hotel (I forget the one they used to go to now that I think about it) and the Hotel staff shows almost utter disdain to them, YET every single year because of their insurance(and the high prices they charge the DefCon go'ers) they manage to have all new EVERYTHING, its' kind of a win/win situation. Though this does not excuse the crime of Shop-Lifting to say that Walmart is somehow a victim is naive at best, in fact, they can actually gain back more, if not equal, in what they have lost because of the bulk they buy in, they get premium returns on it and THEN further, see damages from that person who was accosted with shop-lifting, in truth they go after shoplifters so vehemently because they see more profit than normal, its' almost like selling a product twice at twice the cost. They do not raise their prices(Walmart and other big chains) because of this loss, this loss is MORE than covered by insurance(of which the cost of can be cut in half because of on-site security, shitty as it is) and prosecution. Going past this, as an S/O, I would state that the PRIMARY reason for us, even actual Security OFFICERS' is not necessarily Loss Prevention but for the heavy discounts for the cost of insurance, this often makes having security extremely valuable as the price of having us and insurance still tends to be a lot less than the insurance by itself. SO, in essence, Loss Prevention is not in fact a reason for making higher mark-ups(at least at Walmarts/Chain stores) but is only an excuse for higher profit, no more and no less. For smaller stores however I agree 100%, for walmart, who further always buys in bulk and thus cuts products to even so much as a tenth of their price in some cases, no. Add that to Walmart owning most of their own factories they get shipments from...

• I agree Dylan. As we have a police scanner at home, and at leat twice a day, the cops are called to Walmart for shop lifting. Dont people understand the results of shop lifting? Arrest. prices are raised. possible injuries? I know some people (not on here) express the wrong idea that shop lifting isn't a crime that is charged for. They think that if they get caught, they will give back the items and get arrested and then get a slap on the wrist by the judge. When in fact, most stores (walmart included) will proscute to the fullest on shop lifters. I have had a couple of brushes regarding shoplifting. When my son was 7 or 8, he took a pack of gum and walked out of the drug store we were in. I wasn't aware of what he did until i walked outside to find him. He was sitting outside putting gum in his mouth. I asked him where he got it. and he told me. I marched him inside, asked for manager, and made him explain to manager what he did. I then made him take his money out of his pocket, and made him pay for the gum. Then i took gum and threw in garbage. The manager told him he wasn't allowed back in store. He was so embarrassed and upset. I got him home and he got punished for 2 weeks of no tv, no playing, no going outside. he got to go to school and home and that was it. he had to sit at kitchen table writing "I will not steal anything ever again" 5000 times. To this day, (he's 32) he refuses to take anything. Even if it's on the side of the road and says 'Free'. I lucked out with him. Daughter wasn't as lucky. And i allowed them to 'arrest' her. and she got the punishment of 100 hours community service from a judge. She was 12. Not to mention what she got from me. Just because these items are there doesn't give any person the right to just take it. And when items are stolen, the stores have to compensate for the losses. So they raise the prices of eveything in the store. No matter if it's a mom and pop store or a huge store. Stealing is stealing. And all thieves need to be proscuted to the fullest by law. It isn't little kids stealing anymore. It's grown adults and this isn't their first time doing it either. Once a thief always a thief.

• Actually, shoplifting does take a huge bite out of Walmart's profits, IconYu -- even though they remain enormously profitable. But the company's viewpoint is that shoplifting losses are cheaper than paying people to prevent those losses. I'd bet that it suffers more losses per capita than any chain in America due to its lack of security.

• @Matt Have even seen Walmart's profits? There is no way enough shop lifting could happen to make a dent.

• The problem here is that if the employee HADN'T chased them the employee would have gotten in trouble for it, despite it being extremely dangerous, thus, the very very many issues Wal-Mart has. And, to those who tend not to understand, I have personally seen Employees' chasing shop-lifters', I'd thought it was just a matter of personal pride or honor but in truth its' actually more or less a requirement, despite, you know, you're kinda protected under law, the goods aren't worth the possible loss of life. This is actually just really lucky, I'm glad this person only got hit instead of far far worse.

• Scumbags like this are the reason certain things (even at walmart) are grossly overpriced. I hope they go to prison, in fact I wish they would be forced to freely (or prison pay at like .02 an hour or whatever) make the products that they stole. Cheapshotting pussies.
