Weird Teacher Watch: Charles Plummer's Tough Love Leaves Children Battered & Bruised

In February, L.C. Swain Middle School assistant principal Charles Plummer decided to educate his kids with the end of his belt. While beatings have a long tradition in child-rearing -- my own father was made to find a switch to smack him with (and God forbid it not be thick enough) -- one had hopes we'd learned our lesson that sparing the rod only spoils a child's chances of a long rap sheet.
Numerous studies have shown that corporal punishment increases the likelihood of criminal aggression and anti-social behavior later in life. Hitting a child only teaches them to act out their emotional impulses, reinforcing violent outbursts and the unbroken circle of abuse. Of course, in Plummer's case, we aren't talking about a garden variety spanking.
Perhaps sensitive from his job to the teasing that goes on in school, Plummer disciplined his 15-year old daughter for making fun of another student with around 15 lashes from his belt across her wrist, and additional strikes on her legs. She alleges that when she stepped back, he told her to stand still and struck her harder.
The next day it was his 14-year old son's turn. He'd gotten in trouble for bad grades and talking back to a teacher. His father asked his son, "How old am I?" and when his son answered correctly, "42," Plummer told him that was how many times he was going to be whipped.
Plummer struck him 8 times across his open palm when the boy pulled his hand back. (So maybe the daughter's a little tougher.) His father asked, "Are you going to fight me?" to which the boy brashly replied in the affirmative. Plummer then punched the teen several times in the face, threw him to the ground and kicked him several times while he lay curled up.
According to the boy, Plummer then asked, "Are you ready for round two?" The boy declined and Plummer left him alone.
When Plummer's apparently estranged wife picked up the kids at the conclusion of his three days of custody, she saw her son's black eye. Thereafter she wouldn't let her children go to his house or allow Plummer into hers. This is apparently when Florida Department of Children and Families became involved and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Department was contacted.
Plummer's charged with two counts of child abuse, and has been placed in a school district position that doesn't involve contact with students. Let's just hope he doesn't own a dog.
