On August 31, Jennifer Nibbe frantically called 911 to say a masked intruder had broken into her home, grabbed the family’s rifle, and shot husband James Nibbe in the head as he lay in bed. The gun had been left by the door to shoot small animals, she claimed…
After the bad guy whacked her husband, Jennifer says she emerged from the bathroom to find the gun pointed at her. The intruder pulled the trigger, but the gun wouldn’t fire. So he grabbed her by the hair and dragged her to the living room, where he wrapped a rope around her neck. “You’re lucky you’re not dead,” he said before running out the back door of their Lake Crystal, Minnesota home.
To back her story, Jennifer showed police blood from the attack, as well as cuts on her inner thighs. But almost from the start, her story didn’t add up.
There were no signs of a struggle in the living room. And though the bad guy seemed intent on killing James, he’d left Jennifer basically without a scratch, hadn’t stolen anything, nor had he bothered to deal with her 16-year-old son, who was home at the time.
There were no signs of fresh tire tracks around the home, and Jennifer’s thigh injuries weren’t suggestive of defensive wounds.
In essence, detectives determined the bad guy would have had to have intimate knowledge of everything in the home. In complete darkness, they were supposed to believe that he broke into the house, found the shotgun and shells, then inexplicably decided to kill James Nibbe without bothering to steal anything. And that’s when Jennifer’s story began to fall apart.
Though she claimed she and James had a fine marriage, her cousin told detectives otherwise. They also discovered that the 33-year-old woman had been sending nude photos and sexting another man. Moreover, her own diary was quite clear about her thoughts on her boyfriend and marriage. Read one entry:
just sent (boyfriend) a naughty picture of me, and he wants to fuck me
tomorrow. Can I control myself and say no? I don’t think I can. I want
him. I’ve always had feelings for him. I can’t stop thinking about him
and I together. I am very sad today. I do love my husband, but you can
only give for so long before it wears on a person. I give and give and
he takes and takes and takes. He can be very selfish…”
From there, the evidence just kept on building. She’d been spending nearly $1,000 a month to fraudulently obtain pain medicine. She was also thousands of dollars in debt. And on June 25, she’d taken out a $250,000 life insurance policy on her husband.
Last week, she was arrested at the surgery center where she worked as a nurse, charged with second-degree murder. She faces up to 40 years in the slam if convicted. (Special thanks to reader Amanda for the tip.)
