Weird Teacher Watch: Carlos Ortega Serves Up the Sleaze at Prestigious Hill School

• What's funny is that they never talk about the girl and HER part in this. It's not just 45 year old male teachers who are horny. A shame that the real "scum" was never brought to light.

• I graduated from the Hill school last year with the victim and knew her personally. Mr. Ortega was also a former dorm parent of mine and my advanced Spanish four teacher.I was shocked by the indecent because I had always respected Mr. Ortega and even considered him a friend. While i cannot verify most of the facts of the entire story, I can say that Mr. Ortega would never commit this crime unless he was seduced.I can attest that the under aged victim was spoiled, shallow, and enjoyed playing love games with her male peers. Her run in with Mr. Ortega was just her latest and greatest game. She reveled in drama and loved the attention it produced. That being said, what Mr. Ortega did was highly inappropriate and he should be punished as the law dictates. Regarding The Hill School, I am sad to report that in the same year another teacher had relations with a student. Fortunately, for physics teacher Jesse Levvit the student had already turned 18.The school knew about the inappropriate relationship and failed to act for fear of the school's reputation being tarnished. The outburst of student teacher relationships at Hill is ironic because the school's student sexual intimacy policy is extremely severe. I received a five day suspension for being caught kissing. All of our clothes were on and we did not lie about the situation. However, the deans felt it necessary to threaten expulsion and comment on how lucky I was to have received such a light punishment. I am only bringing one hypocrisy to light that festers inside The Hill School. Hill is a bastion for the nonsensical and all reason is stamped out by outdated ideologies. Send ur kids anywhere else!

• Literally none of that happened. He got in trouble for sending her inappropriate emails. Whoever wrote this story has too much time on his hands and an overactive imagination. I went to the school when this happened, so I know. Nothing even close to the events depicted above occurred. The Hill School is a fine institution and handled the problem thoughtfully and professionally. It's not the school's fault a normal guy (whose dorm I lived in my freshman year) decided to perv out randomly.

• Everyone is focused on him. Of course he deserves the humiliation. But there are at least 500+ other people implicated in this who do not. I commented initially on this article because I wanted to address factual inaccuracies about this case and boarding schools in general. I am not trying to force anyone to tiptoe around people's feelings, especially in a public forum. If you want to judge, fine. At this point he deserves to be judged. But don't judge ignorantly, whether you think or care that you could hurt people or not. There's no reason to.

• @Kristin: I am with you on this one. He had a duty as a representative of the school to behave appropriately, regardless of what the student may or may not have been asking him to do. As far as his family, if his wife was truly unaware I am sure she is devastated, as well as afraid and ashamed. His actions show how truly selfish he is, because obviously he did not give to flips as to how his sexual improprieties would affect her and the children.

• Issn't people publicly shaming you when you cross that line and betray your family sort of par for the course as part of your punishment? He dealt them the humiliation, and that there will be plenty more of it as time goes on, with or without us.

• Just because he disregarded their feelings doesn't give everyone else that right. Also, the criminal proceedings indicate that the charges are obviously not completely spurious, but that does not mean that they or the reports of them are not embellished. As for what I expected from online comments, the answer is not much, but I wanted to remind people to try and think in general before they speak. This may be just a news story to you but it was an extremely painful time for a very tight-knit community, of which all the people involved were well-known members. If something like this ever occurs in your community, you will not dismiss it so easily. No one is of course trying to deny the right of free speech or the right to read and comment what you like. Common courtesy is applicable wherever you are, online or not, and if you think that that is idealistic, that is sad.

• No, they are not guilty by association but the duty to protect them and the family name lies with Mr. Ortega. He, apparently, didn't deem them worthy to worrry about as he engaged in inappropriate (if not outright criminal) activity with a teenager. Once the story makes the news, it's fair game. What do you expect? Do you seriously expect the entire country not to comment on public stories? What world are you living in? If you find this so reprehensible, I'd advise you not to read comments in public forums. His resignation immediately following the acts leads me to believe the charges are not spurious.

• It is not Mr. Ortega's family's fault that he acted without reference to them. If anything, it makes their pain worse. They are not guilty by association; they are also victims of his inappropriate actions. The point is not to excuse any aspect of Mr. Ortega's conduct. He is being held accountable for it and will be for the rest of his life. The point is that ignorant and judgmental statements about an as yet nebulous and unverified set of events do not help anyone, they instead hurt EVERYONE affected by the case, including the victim.

• Perhaps the perv should have thought about his family before hitting on and trying to seduce a teenage student. That's his fault. He brought the shame upon himself and his family. People once again blaming the victim. It never stops. You can't hold people equally responsible in a situation where there is disparate authority/responsibility. What part about that don't you get? It doesn't matter what she *allegedly* did, according to you. He was a teacher at the school, the onus/legal obligation is COMPLETELY on him to act appropriately. Why don't you expect the MEN who are in POSITIONS of AUTHORITY to act responsibly? Stop making excuses for behavior that is boorish/inappropriate (and worthy of termination) at best, and criminal at worst.

• Please don't take everything in this article at face value. Much of it is embellished and doesn't even make sense. For instance, if he started coming on to her in January, they would not have been in a hotel together for a tennis match later that month (girls' tennis is a fall sport). Also, don't make ignorant comments about boarding schools based on their depictions in Hollywood- except for isolated incidents like this, they are great institutions filled with caring and devoted faculty that provide a wonderful education. And also remember that this guy, however sleazy (although he has plead not guilty to the charges and has not yet been convicted) has a wife and two children who are really hurting from this, and flippant and ignorant comments make it worse.

• This event occurred a few years after I graduated from the Hill. The reason the school kept this quiet for so long is because there was overwhelming evidence that completely falsified the girl's claims. Hundreds of e-mails between Mr. Ortega and the student were found that revealed that this was much more than some scene of "sexual abuse", but that the girl indeed was allowing this to happen. The girl also was 18 years old at the time. Although what he did was wrong and very scummy, the article displays the Hill School as acting poorly which is actually the complete opposite. The school was mainly interested in protecting the girl's reputation.
