Westboro Baptist Church: That Beautiful Day in West Virginia When They Got Their Ass Kicked

• I know I come off as judgmental and harsh when it comes to my views on Christians, but the reason for my attitude stems from the treatment I got at the hands of these so called "Loving Christians". My brother was one of the first homosexual marriages in California, I went to his wedding to show my support, and somewhere along the lines I was photographed with him and labeled one of the Homosexuals that they had a problem with. I have a wife and two kids, but that didn't stop the Christians in my town from giving me a problem. At first it was annoying, people calling me and telling me I was going to go to hell, but after awhile it started to get pretty scary, I got hate mail form so called "Good Christians", in one of these letters a man claiming that God could cure my sinful ways said he was going to Rape and Murder my wife and kids. These people actually KNEW I was a straight man and I was still treated like a monster. I know that not everyone is like this, but I was treated like shit by simply supporting my brother, how is that truly, Christian?

• Sigh, well I am what you would title a "Christian" being a praticing Catholic. I also believe that gays should be able to get married - we are all people, while abortion is not for me personally, I do not feel that I have a right to tell another woman what to do - hell, I did IVF and according to a lot of "Christians I am wrong because I wasn't able to have kids for a reason and therefore went against God doing what I did. I could on and on - I guess what I am saying is that as with anything - there are always rogue factions to every group but lumping all of us in with the crazies isn't necessarily right either and holy shit - I'm Republican too - ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. • @Rando I'm not religious.. Probably really far from.. and I see your point but the way you word it, you come across to be the judgmental and intolerant one. While I don't agree with their religion, I have a lot of Christian friends and family and they are nothing like what you described.. Just sounds like the same old recycled paragraph..

• The point is most Christians want us to follow the rules they feel are important to them. They tell us we should get right with God, that Gay Marriage will destroy us all, you know just being an all around intolerant bunch, all the while preaching the word of their so called God. They use the Bible to justify things like racism, homophobia, and kill abortion doctors while claiming "it's wrong to kill". They force their religion into my life whenever they get a chance, so no I don't care if they have so called reformed!

• Rando, dude, ok. But seriously, what Christians do you know who are seriously following those "rules" in the Bible and feeling like it's legal in America? All of that is illegal. Most Christians readily agree with, and a minority of them at least begrudgingly obey, the law prohibiting child marriage, pedophilia, rape and polygamy (except in Utah and parts of north Arizona, where law enforcement is Mormon too, so, getting them to follow the rest of the nation is still impossible). The vast majority of Christians readily gave up all that truly horrible mistreatment of women a long, long, long time ago. Men in general still perpetuate milder forms of discrimination against women, and subjugation, even here in America. Remember, Christians are trying to reform themselves and how to interpret the Bible. Don't they get any credit from you for that?

• Actually the Bible is also okay with child marriage, King James, one of the BIG GUYS of the Bible had a wife who was only NINE years old. Mary was thirteen when she had Jesus, and Joe was twenty-three when he was married to Mary. Oh, and let's not forget how the Bible treats Rape, pay a small fine or marry the woman you raped, bare in mind these rules ONLY apply if someone sees you commit the rape. If NO ONE sees the rape, it's like it never happened. Pedophilia, Rape, and Polygamy, all fine in the Bible. There are literally few, if any passages in the Bible that say any of these activities are wrong in some form.

• those are not the only areas. there is the issue of Divorce as well. on how if you get divorced. that if you find yourself another spouse. that you are supposedly commiting adultry if you marry again while the ex is still alive..... also, in there is a section if a woman gets widowed. that if the late husband has a brother. she is supposed to marry him. by the way. alot of these thumpers are thumping against Polygamy. but yet, it is allowed in the bible. I am not against it. just as long as ALL spousal parties are CONSENTING ADULTS. and by Federal Law. you become a adult by the age of 18 for most things.

• My problem is they want us to take the Bible literally when it come to things like Creation, Gay Marriage, and Abortion, but when it comes to the rules that might personally inconvenience them or their way of life, they act like "well the Bible doesn't really mean that so we don't take that part of the Bible literally", but then make us live our lives by the rules they feel are most relevant. My point is they cherry pick rules they want us to live by, but if you use their tactics against them they just say, your going to hell, and walk away. It's bullshit, at the end of the day it's bullshit!

He swindled a retired Navy officer out of $500,000. He is also like the little darling of every church he is a member of. He uses the church to get both accomplices and victims. A church in Fredericksburg St. Matthews, actually had crosses built by Kappel with material known to be stolen from a client of his. Kappel was an unlicensed contractor, a really bad one at that. He was arrested for contracting without a license but there is belief that perhaps he shared the wealth to make an arrest never happen.

• Rando, you'll have to ask Christians. I was raised a Christian but am not a practicing one. Just from my experience, Christianity is trying to stay relevant and realistic about what it can expect practitioners to do as of this day. Laws of the land do over-rule certain religious practices, no matter what. Like those you listed, human sacrifices, I wish animal sacrifices were illegal, but not yet, Inquisition, and such. I'm not a believer in the approach that it is everything or it is nothing or whatever it is, is invalid. I'm ok with Christians cherry-picking out of the Bible what rules that were fine in ancient times are just not appropriate now. Isn't that a good thing? Now if other religions would do the same, how much farther along would be the women and gays of the world?

• Here's what I want to know, Rando: The Bible is clear about its displeasure with usury and the money traders. So why are bankers and Wall Street guys allowed to attend Mass? Are they not doing the work of Satan? And how do they hide their pointy tails? I've never figured that out.

• Well alexa, I think modern Christianity needs to explain that. How can they say their "Good Christians" when they won't explain why the Bible says one thing is okay while they themselves don't practice it. They want us to follow the rules of the Bible but just not all of them, how does that work out. If they can cherry pick what rules they don't want to follow then I can do that too. • They have restrictions on where they can speak, but yes, they do have the right no matter how vile most people find it. I'm read a fair amount about them, but have never understood how they connected sodiers' deaths to gay people. So, why picket the soldiers' funerals when they could picket gay activities/orgs instead?

• The Westboro Baptist Church is in Topeka KS (too close for comfort for me... only a good hour and a half drive across the Missouri border)... I don't know how they can actually consider themselves a REAL CHURCH. They basically consist of nothing but lawyers and make their money by suing people who assault them, or anything in that nature. They believe that the death of our troops are in result to Americas tolerance on homosexuality. Unfortunately they are too stupid to realize to be grateful that our troops still fight to this day to give them their freedom to protest. It's sickening. And with them being SO CLOSE to Kansas City.. I hear A LOT about them. Not to mention a local radio station gives them way too much publicity to egg them on. It's all very sickening. Someone needs to knock them out cold for a few days--with or without an assault charge.

• I'm sure if they thought it could be treated as legal, everything that used to be done back in the old days of Bible writing would suit them just fine. Modern Christianity mercifully does not advance or condone what you listed. But you know that.

Lying is not protected under the 1st Amendment, neither should be public abuse. SCOTUS has ruled in the past that certain public needs can curtail the scope of a Constitutional amendment, and I hope a particularly smart justice will make the legal argument that will once and for all muzzle the Westboro freaks from showing up at funerals.
