But he christened their relationship after her 12th birthday party, raping her after the other children had left.
It wasn't his first time. He began raping his stepchildren -- a boy and a girl who are twins -- beginning in 1987. The incest would continue until just last year. By that time they were both 28.
Over the years, he fathered eight children with his stepdaughter, one of whom died. He not only faces a whopping 350 counts of sexual abuse, but he also faces another 35 counts for forcing the two girls to have sex with other men in exchange for money. He's further suspected of molesting one of the daughters he had with his stepdaughter.
It's unclear how he kept the kids quiet until late into their 20s. German law makes trials fairly secretive compared to ours. When the stepdaughter testified, a judge cleared the courtroom of spectators. But it seems like all three kids are willing witnesses against him.
