I agree that there are certain longstanding situations where you can buy into the abuse or Stockholm Syndrome type deal, but that is rare. This is the year 2010. I know how you've explained your upbringing, but I do not believe that to be the norm across the country. In certain religions, yes (that is definitely part of the story with these types of situations - brainwashing from birth). For the vast majority of people today, I believe they expect and want the same opportunities for their girls as boys. Abuse is really not an acceptable answer, sorry. • There is NO excuses for these woman to have allowed this abuse to continue,,whether they were abused or not...When I was 18 I had a son with an abuser, who was all sweetness and goodness up until after I had the baby..He was so violent he kicked my two front teeth out, and thank God they changed the laws around that time so i couldnt drop the charges, and he went back to jail..Years later, I let him have visits with my son,,and one day i saw him snatch an ice cream out of my son's hands and throw it out the window,,That was all I had to see,,,I picked up a Butcher knife and let him KNOW that he would never be putting his hands on my son..He ran off of course(thank God), I was abused as a child and I will never, ever, stand by while a child is abused..

• All three of them need to be charged with murder. They mother and grandmother are just as guilty for standing by watching it happen and not doing anything about it. This makes me sick. That baby was innocent, and couldn't even protect itself. It didn't have the choice to leave. As a mother, my first priority has always been my daughter, ever since the day I found out I was pregnant. Although I was raised that no man would ever lay a finger on me out of anger, if anyone ever hit my daughter, they would be out of our lives do fast their heads would spin. Parents need to start protecting their children, not some asshole who just donated the sperm/egg to make the child. Damn I am pissed now.

• To those asking why grandma and mom didn't do anything....it's possible he was also abusing one or even both of them. It's also possible that a) he was the only one making money so they'd have nowhere to go and no way to get there if they did leave, or b) the mother was the owner of the house and the only one making money (he is only 19, after all). If he was physically abusing his kid or wife, his mother might think twice about making him angry and throwing him out or calling the cops on him. Because sadly, what happens in cases like this is, more often than not, if they don't catch the parent beating the kid in the act, or the kid isn't practically dead already, the police don't do anything, or even better, get the person who called them for something minor (possession, outstanding warrants for court, whatever). If grandma has a bong in the bedroom, or is letting her 19 year old son and the presumably also underage mom have some beers, it's more likely that she'll get arrested and her son will get mad and take it out on the baby/the mom/her.

I was in a very controlling relationship too, the abuse was always verbal at first. After I gave birth to my first child his father hit me, once. I was scared, but that baby was more important to me than my own safety. I got out, immediately. It was not easy, but for my sons sake, I did it. The knowledge that he was capable of violence was a reason, in and of itself, for her to leave once she had that baby.

• the baby was only crying for attention for his mom, dad to feed him, to hold him, show him love. That is the way babies are. I injured my rib about four weeks ago and in the first week, I couldn't sleep on back, sit up, lay on my side, or cough without being in excrutiating pain.Four weeks later it's still painful. Especially the force from a sneeze feels like a have cracked something. I cant imagine a baby having to live in constant pain like that. The "grandmother" needs some sort of punishment herself. • @ Jenn Thank you for that comment...when I got preggers with the alien I to wasnt exactly thrilled at the thought of becoming a mother. I had always thought of myself as one of those women who would never have kids....not that I didnt love kids but the whole noise factor and mess factor...my headaches and OCD for messes gave me nightmares all threw my pregnancy with the alien. But when the doctor's put her in my arms for the first time I fell in love and now I simply couldnt imagine my life without her and I am thrilled to be expecting another one. Your so right there are breeders and ovens....and then there are Mothers. This breeder needs to be jailed along with the grandmother who could look the other way. The sperm donner just needs to die. My biggest pet peeves are when I see little kids running ahead of their parents in parking lot, when I see kids obviously young enough to still be in car/booster seats-but are not even in a seatbelt, and little kids riding bikes without helmets. I always point them out and say to whoever I'm with, "there goes another kid whose mother doesn't love 'em"...a little extreme perhaps, but it's an accident waiting to happen. And before someone says 'we didn't wear helmets when we were kids' - I realize that, but there wasn't as much traffic back then either.

• I said this to my husband this weekend as we watched a woman let her what appeared to be 4 year old run around a busy parking lot with an infant in a stroller while she talked on a cell phone -- some women have children not because they want to but just because they aren't smart enough to prevent it. There is a big difference between wanting to have a baby and having a baby. A lot of women can have a baby - wanting a child is a different story. Stupid fucks.
