Don't look now, but Canada and Texas could be overtaking Florida and Ohio in the race for the prestigious Gooberville Cup. Today's story takes us to Blissville, New Brunswick, where 58-year-old Graham Currier had been dating his sweetheart for three years...

Graham figured it was time to finally pop the question. So he bought her a diamond ring and waited for that special moment to bust out his query of matrimony.

The problem is that Graham, being ill-advised in the romantic arts, figured the perfect time to ask her was after a night of heavy drinking. When he pulled out the ring, she said no. Then, adding insult to injury, she decided to go to bed.

This didn't please Graham. In fact, he seemed to think she owed him wedded bliss. So he followed her to the bedroom and yelled, "You've just been baiting me on for the past three years, haven't you?"

Then he punched her in the face, put his hands around her throat, and gagged her with a bra to keep her from screaming. He also threatened to blow her son away.

Point of interest: None of these techniques are recommended for stimulating the reconciliation process.

Graham then told the woman that if she called police, she better tell them that he was armed. So as she called the cops, Graham grabbed some shotgun shells and fled to a neighbor's house. He was later arrested.

Canadian police thought Graham's method of romance pretty much sucked, so they charged him with assault. He was sentenced to six months, and can't have any contact with the woman or her son for three years. He's also banned from owning a gun for a decade. (Special thanks to reader Tara for the tip.)
