Michael Gilbert, Sex Offender, Kills Homeless Man to Fake His Own Death (Again)

He was looking at yet another parole violation, so he called police in Biloxi, Mississippi pretending to be someone named Michael Brown and claiming that his cousin, Michael Gilbert, was drowning.
He isn't the brightest criminal. Police soon discovered the call was a ruse so Gilbert could fake his own death. He was charged with sending false distress signals and sentenced to another six months in the slam.
But he couldn't stay out of trouble. This time he was wanted to Fort Worth, Texas for sexually assaulting a minor and failing to register as a sex offender. So he decided to make himself disappear once more, though this time with a more lethal plan.
According to police, he found a homeless man he thought looked like him. Then he shot the man in the head, stuffed him in the truck of his car, and set it on fire. Police found the burning vehicle in a park. And when they popped the trunk, they found the body inside.
The license plate traced the car back to Gilbert, who apparently didn't believe police would look to hard for the murderer of a sex offender. But when they checked dental records to see who the dead man was, detectives found that the dead man wasn't Gilbert.
Police finally caught up with the very-much-alive Gilbert at a Fort Worth apartment building. But he wasn't inclined to go willingly. After a seven-hour standoff, the cops used tear gas to storm his apartment. They found Gilbert hiding in an attic, and he tried to slit his own throat as he was being arrested.
Unfortunately, the shitbag didn't die. But when he gets out of the hospital, police are expected to charge him with first-degree murder. (Special thanks to reader Moet for the tip.)

Too bad he didn't succeed...I'm all for rehabilitation but this guy was never going to change obviously and eventually his idiocy and life of crime led to murder. The cops should have just let him bleed to death - now he's just another taxpayer's burden.
That he honestly thought that police were not going to check dental records and look into what was an obvious homicide shows his IQ-level, too. I feel sorry for the murdered homeless man.
awesome...what a sick fuck. murdering someone is bad enough, murdering someone to disappear is seemingly worst than just outright murder. It seems more heinous, maybe due to the fact it highlights the lack of value on someone else's life.
He is a real stupid jerk. The maggot should have stayed in prison after his 4 parole violations. If the Grand Jury indicts; and the prosecution goes for DP I can deal with that. And if the coward decides to plead guilty thru a plea bargain LWOP is grand. And in general population. No favors for him. General pop don't like child rapists. He may not last long in there.

how many parole violations do you have to have before you get locked up for good? Does that make sense to anyone? How is it that an offender can offend then after doin some time he gets out on parole....then violates his parole.....then does some time....then gets out on parole again....and violates AGAIN! and again and again....now to me that says "HI I SHOULDN'T BE OUT OF PRISON BECUASE I CANT STOP DOING BAD THINGS" I bet he'll get out in 10 yrs only to go back 6 mths later...then get out again.....
The police should've waited outside while he finished off his sorry ass... Go figure a life long pervy loser can't even kill himself right, hopefully his 'new friends' in the slammer will find a fitting way to send this bastard off to the great beyond.

Since he wasn't able to successfully fake his death the first time, he decided to use a more elaborate method the second time? And this didn't work why? I don't understand how he even got caught. It seems that he covered all of his tracks and was a very intelligent man.

i would say he needs to just kill himself but its apparent he can't even do that right...so just lock him up in a padded room and walk away

This guy should never have been out of prison in the first place, after raping a child. When are the punishments for sexual attacks going to fit the crimes?
