On today’s episode of Great Moral Dilemmas of the Day, we bring you the vexing case of 17-year-old Daniel Kovarbasich. It began when he was just 12. 55-year-old Duane Hurley hired him to walk his dog in North Ridgeville, Ohio. But the relationship would later turn sexual…
Duane Hurley was a pedophile who plied Daniel with money and the use of his car in exchange for sex
Hurley was a pedophile. Police would later find thousands of porn photos on his computer, many depicting underage boys.
But Daniel was no saint himself. He’d been kicked out of school and busted for various low-rent kid crimes. He also manipulated Hurley, agreeing to sex with the older man in exchange for money and the use of his car.
The relationship apparently went on for years — until January 22, 2010.
Daniel says Hurley had sodomized him two weeks before. He now wanted to do it again. That’s when Daniel snapped. He repeatedly bashed Hurley in the head with a pickle jar, then began stabbing him. And when his knife broke, he went to the kitchen and got another one.
By the time it was all over, Hurley had been stabbed 50 times. Daniel was eventually convicted of voluntary manslaughter.
Yet he would only spend 16 months in prison. On Sunday, a judge released him to home confinement. He’s scheduled to be sent to a mental institution until he’s 21.
In one sense, we seem to have a clear case of the abused finally summoning the will to take out his abuser. Few tears will be shed over the killing of a man who preys on 12-year-old boys.
The problem is that the victim in this case was a willing participant — at least until he was no longer willing. Though he wasn’t old enough to consent, it didn’t seem to bother Daniel that he was trading his body for money all those years. He surely had a beef with the older man. But did his own behavior justify murderous revenge?
We’d like to know what you think, dearest reader.
