Ka Yang Microwaved Her 6-Week-Old Baby to Death in Sacramento

It was March 17, and police were summoned to a Sacramento home on word that a baby was in distress. But 6-week-old Mirabelle Thao-Lo was already dead. Medics were told that she'd suffered a seizure, then fallen from someone's arms. But her injuries were extensive...
An autopsy revealed she'd suffered from deep and mysterious burns. Detectives suspected she'd been placed in a microwave. But since those cases are so rare -- there have been only three known cases in the U.S. in the last 10 years -- it would take months for them to pinpoint the source of the injuries.
They would need to consult medical experts from around the country. But they finally felt sure by yesterday, when they arrested the baby's 29-year-old mother, Ka Yang.
Detectives still have no idea why she microwaved the child. Neighbors describe the woman as something of a recluse who never came out of her home, despite having three other kids all under the age of 7. When she first moved in, one neighbor bought her a bag of rice and invited her over to visit. But Yang refused.
She's now charged with murder and assault and being held without bail.
