Ten Executions Gone Shockingly Wrong
Lawrence Roberts, Moron of the Day: Tries to Cut Off Son's Cast With Circular Saw
![]() |
For the uninitiated, the circular saw is the alligator of the power tool kingdom. Traditional wisdom says you best not put your hands anywhere near its teeth, lest it bite the living shit out of you.
And seeing as how Roberts possessed an industrial grade circular saw -- which would be the equivalent of a super alligator from the Sci-Fi Channel -- safety provisions would be especially needed.
But Roberts decided to cut off the kid's cast anyway. It appears he overestimated his skill at the precision cut.
The boy ended up with a lopped off thumb and an index finger that was nearly severed.
It also probably really hurt. (That's just a rough estimate on our part.)
The kid was sent to the hospital for emergency surgery to reattachment his various digits. We're not sure if he'll be able to use them anymore.
Dad, meanwhile, will be on leave from his homemade medicine practice. He's been charged with aggravated child abuse.

so the guy made an error in judgement... Get over it!! it could happen to anyone.... u all comment on all these articles as if use are saints
Wow, the whole country of Australia thinks we're too hard on this guy?
I guess, if you live in a place where EVERYTHING wants to kill you, slightly maiming your child is just "meh".
I know plenty... everything on that continent is horrible and unholy and wants to destroy the world.
Just when ya thought you heard/read it all...here he comes. Hey dumb ass...where's you sign?
Reminds me of the story of a man who was cutting down a tree with a chain saw. He was up on a latter while his wife was spotting him. He lost control of the saw and sliced his woman across the neck and she died quickly. This is why I won't help my husband use a chain saw on our trees. I want to live!

Trying to find this particular link brought up so many more. A lot of people die because of saws~!
reminds me of the mikes hard lemonade commercials. The one where the guy used a saw and cut his leg off at the boot.
Hard to believe that was all he cut! Kid should have lost his arm or even his life......wow.
I once cut off a cast on my lower leg with a steak knife. It was the 4 week mark and it was supposed to by on for at least 6. Needless to say, it wasn't fully healed. 13 years later it still doesn't feel right.
Read this on DD a few days ago and I just dont c how dad saw this as a GOOD idea! Too fucking cheap to go to the ER I'm thinking! Bet this is the last time Dad is allowed to play operation with the kids!
I could (on a stretch of the mind) see someone trying to carefully remove a cast with a small handsaw or serrated drywall knife but an industrial grade circular saw?!?! At least with a hand saw or drywall knife you can make slow, controlled cuts. Yeah it might take awhile but if you were careful the cast could be easily removed if you absolutely had to take it off. I presume that if Mr. Roberts had a circular saw he must also own a small handsaw.
My dad worked construction for 10 years and spent almost 20 years restoring a turn of the century farmhouse in really bad shape and when he was working us kids weren't allowed within 10 FEET of the circular saw when he was using it. Those things are dangerous even when used for their intended use, let alone used for home "medical" procedures.
My husband just came home from work and filled me in on how casts are removed in a medical setting. He said that when he broke his hand, the doctor removed the cast with a large pair of scissors. I'm guessing that for a thicker arm cast a serrated knife or serrated pair of scissors is used. He said that all a cast is, is gauze dipped in a thin liquid plaster wrapped over and over again and that once the plaster hardens its kind of crumbly, almost like drywall. If you've ever cut through a drywall or plaster wall, its not that hard to puncture with a simple knife or small saw.
I hope Mr. Roberts lost custody of his kids over this because this is downright abuse!
WOW That is why you go to the doctor to have the cast remove This is sick the son had to go to the E.R. ANYWAY to have his finger reattachment so it cost BIG BUCKS$$
This is not even funny and would be a thing in the past if all people had access to healthcare regardless of income or employment status but of course Republicans and specifically teabaggers would rather parents cut off a child's cast with a circular saw just as long as we're not "socialist".
You hurt your back stretching that far? I don't care if we're a republic, a democracy, socialist, theocratic, or ruled by the man that lives in your finger who's been to the moon twice, government can't pass a law that will make people intelligent.
A Federally Qualified Health Center works with low income individuals with little or no insurance to get them the medical care they need at prices they can afford. Most have sliding fee scales based on income. This person deserves to spend a good long time in prison.
I when throw this when I became uninsurable. I takes mouths to get an appointment to even get to the point to gt the information in to get on a sliding scale. This is great to have, but some times your heath matters don't have don't always agree to not happen during the wait. This guy was a moron, I might be wrong ( not about him being a moron ), but I think he was not trying to hurt his child. Unless the broken arm was caused by him, or there is some other history of abuse, then he was a dumb asp dad, that did a dumb asp thing, that while he might meant to help caused much more damage to his son. I pray for the son, cause daddy was dumb, the son didn't fall far from the tree, he stood there and let his dad work on him with a saw. I love and miss my dad ( he passed last month) and my dad was a very bright man, on the most part, I was able to trust his judgement, but if he had came at me with a saw to play doctor, I would have ran like hell!
That might be true, but most people have no idea about it and know only that healthcare costs money.
If we had a public option or universal healthcare system like our Canadian neighbors this would not have happened.
And you don't think that costs money (in the form of economy-stifling tax hikes)? Where do you think health care worker salaries, supplies, utilities, etc., come from? Do you believe the fairy tale of "if government is involved, no cost"?
Well SOMEBODY...and I'm guessing a doctor...put the cast ON, so I would assume he has some form of healthcare access.
I said "regardless of income", meaning that they had no choice but to fix their son's broken arm even if it meant going into debt over it or scraping together money that probably goes toward basic ammenities like food and rent. People obviously have access to doctors but whether or not they can afford treatment is another issue.
I would think ANY reputable doctor would take a cast off a kids arm whether getting paid or not. I would think it was like braces, dentists HAVE to take them off whether they are fully paid or not
Never heard of being put in jail for a debt. Thought that was outlawed years ago. Hell we would have to build thousands more prisons in Texas if we put every illegal alien in jail over unpaid ER fees.
If you do not pay the ER bill in the county in Iowa I am in they will put you in jail.
He probably is an asshat and too lazy to take his son to the doctor--or, getting a cast put on is an emergency that federal law requires hosptial emergency rooms to undertake regardless of whether they ever get paid, while taking a cast off is not.
ever hear of Medicaid? Free clinics? Not pay the bill at an ER? I think he's just an asshat that was too lazy to take his son to a doctor.
No, I don't. And his story is like a lot of other stories about people who are uninsured and what they have to deal with when they have no access due to income or lack of insurance to healthcare.
Great. Because of this stupid fucknut we will have to have background checks to buy circular saws. Great.
