Wheatland, Wyoming is a mellow ag town, population 3,600, located about 70 miles north of Cheyenne. Here, the sight of American flags flapping in the Great Plains' wind is commonplace. It's where sleepy quiet is a way-of-life. And it's where Everett Conant III called home...

For the better part of seven years, Conant and his clan -- wife Suzette and their theee sons -- live in a dirty brown trailer at 757 E. Oak Street.

While Suzette worked as a waitress at a local A&W, Everett -- at least until this spring -- labored unenviably at a Wyoming Premium Farms hog operation.

But Everett's stint at the swine farm would be short-lived. He quit sometime in the spring, citing problems arranging child care -- which was peculiar, considering his youngest son was around age 12 at the time.

Residents familiar with Everett have described him to reporters as "quiet" and "nice," although they are also quick to add he was "kind of different" too.

Last Thursday night, the odd exploded into the unexplainable.

Without warning or sign, the thirty something-year-old Everett -- his exact age is not known -- ambled into his family's trailer and unleashed a downpour of bullets. When the gunfire finally ceased, Conant's three sons -- Everett IV (also known as EJ), Charles and Joseph, as well as the gunman's brother, Nacuma Everett, lay dead.

All of the dead boys were between the ages of 12 and 18.

Everett Conant's wife, Suzette, was also shot in the arm and the foot. She survived the siege by fleeing on foot.

A neighbor took her into her care when she was spotted running down the road screaming and crying.

Police were called to the trailer park by another resident who heard the gunshots. On the scene, officers overheard Conant talking to himself. They reportedly saw him holding some type of black object in his hand they presumed was a gun.

It took only ten minutes for authorities to convince Conant to surrender peacefully.

On Friday he was charged with four counts of first-degree murder, among a laundry list of other charges.

The maximum penalty for first-degree murder in Wyoming is death.

At his initial, brief court appearance in Platte County Circuit Court, Conant barely lifted his eyes from the floor and his responses to the judge's questions were hushed.

Conant, who had no prior criminal record before Thursday's killing spree, has been ordered to be held without bail. Police have yet to establish a motive for the murders. However, the local rumor mill has spit out the theory that Conant and his wife had recently discussed divorce.
