All you're accomplishing with your rant (besides giving me a CAPS LOCK headache) is confirming the way we see your friend / gang buddy. 'Being in a gang' conjures up images of  certain attitude and behaviour - exactly the kind of attitude and behaviour you are exhibiting. It's sad that someone who still had his whole life to live died, but it was HIS choices and decisions that put him in that situation. He didn't have to waste his life any more than you need to waste yours.
