I think his age was the only thing that saved him the first time around but now he is done for. The liver can take a huge beating over a lifetime and still heal so he must have drank a ridiculous amount in his short life.

I suspect you're probably right - either they don't care about living and are just taking an extraordinarily long time to kill themselves, or they drink / use drugs to dull out whatever pain they are going through - which you could argue is also a form of suicide even though you're only killing part of you consciously. I really don't understand it. What i want to know is, do these people that start on something like Krokodil, ever ask an already-addict whether the whole wasting away thingy hurts. I just can't imagine them happily starting on a drug to blur out their mental anguish, only to then end up with unbearable physical pain. Maybe i'm just giving them too much credit for even thinking anything at all.

I remember you posted about that quite a while ago and I had to look it up. The pictures of the side effects are horrendous. Your right, its ridiculous that people would do that drug knowing that it is certain agonising death. I think depression must play a role in it because they know what its doing to them but they still keep on. There is a kid in my town called Gareth Anderson (aka Liver Lad), you can look him up online as there were news stories about him. When he was 19 he went into liver failure because he was a chronic alcoholic (litres of vodka a day). Somehow, when he was on deaths door his liver began to heal and he made a recovery, you would think that would stop him drinking but it did not..if anything it made him worse. I just heard yesterday that he is in hospital again and this time he will not be coming back out, it may have took another 3 years but he finally fucked himself royally. Its sad a guy so young is going to die but when I thought about it practically it is going to make a lot of peoples lives go a hell of a lot smoother. He caused his family and friends nothing but trouble from police, gangsters and himself being a drunken menace, he was also a leech on society and the NHS. He knew drinking was certain death due to the MASSIVE warning sign he had but he refused to stop..I just cant think of one good reason he should live, which I know sounds harsh but its the plain truth.

To be fair though, i knew beer was an acquired taste and hated the flavour of the first few. Didn't stop me from trying again! :)
I guess the only explanation i can come up with is that people just always think "i won't get addicted, it's just a bit of fun, i'll just try this once".
As bad as the effects of heroin and meth are, look up Krokodil - popular in Russia and it literally melts away your body within months or sometimes mere weeks of use. That one i really don't get - when somebody is trying to get you to try a new drug and as he hands over a shot you notice all the flesh on his arm has withered away, why would you accept???
