It's sad what passes for an article these days. Could this be any more unclear or disjoint? Yes, I suppose it could, but it's still downright badly written. Pronouns have to reference a subject, folks. Also, if one of the victims was, indeed, the woman's son, as indicated, I'm guessing that was not supposed to be included in the article for a couple of reasons: 1) to protect his identity and 2) because all but one of the references call him "the boy" or similar. Which boy (5-year-old or 10-year-old) is anybody's guess throughout the story.
He needs life in prison with twice daily cattle prods to the scrotum and anus administered. She needs additional charges of failure to protect a minor so she can get a prison sentence for turning a blind eye instead of probation.
