Pit Bull Mix Attacks Lead to Debate About Breed Bans
Breakfast reading from the Village Voice Empire: The two dogs brutally bit a woman, but authorities didn't round them up until days later, after they'd chomped another guy in the neighborhood. Who was to blame: the owners, the officers or the dogs? Westword has the story.

You know people have said this about all different kinds of breeds. At one point it was the Golden Retriever. At another it was the Lab. Ect, ect. And now it's the Pit Bull. You know the funny thing though? Most of the people I personally know that say that pittys should be banned don't even know what a Pit Bull looks like. I'll have friends come over my house, play with my dog, then go on facebook and repost a picture saying how Pit Bulls are dangerous, then continue to go to my facebook and comment on how nice my dog is. It's always fun to tell them that my dog is a Pit, and they normally change their mind about Pit Bulls after they meet my dog and a couple other pits that I point out to them. Maybe you should get to know the dog before you deem it vicious, because I guarantee you that if you meet RESPONSIBLE Pit Bull owners then you will love their dogs. It's like that with any breed.
I'm an owner of a Pit Bull mix, and thank you so much for not judging them as a breed. I'm sorry for what happened to your daughter though. :(
I remember the black lab killing a baby making the news. Mom had to pee and for some reason left the baby in the hallway in it's bucket seat instead of taking the baby in the bathroom. Stories like that made me afraid to leave my newborn around my cats. I always took her into the bathroom, the kitchen, where ever I was basically. And we had netting hanging from the ceiling and blocking the cats from her crib until she started sitting (didn't want her to get strangled so we took it down).
My daughter was bitten by a pitbull like dog, I guess a "pit bull mix" the day before Memorial Day. I was letting her ride her bike, with training wheels, around the neighborhood. I will note the need for training wheels as she's only 3. We come upon this house with picnic tables in the front yard and people that look like they would fit right in with the "Deliverance" hill people cast sitting there. They had dogs barking like crazy but fenced up in their smelly yard. Seriously, it stank like cat piss and mold OUTSIDE. But this wasn't where we had a problem. We continued on, me wanting to get away from the noise and the stank. As soon as we're clear and I feel calm I hear this low growling. At first I didn't see it. Tall unkempt grass. Dog crouched down. My daughter is happily riding ahead of me. Two kids lean against the chain link fence watching us. The gate is not closed. I call to my daughter to come back, let's cross the street, she thinks it's crazy fun to to ignore or do the opposite of anything I say so she laughs and SPEEDS UP. Suddenly the dog bolts from it's yard, runs up along side her, seems playful, then growls and lunges at her. The *KIDS* run up and pull him away. I didn't think anything was wrong and asked my girl if she was okay. One of the kids tells me they think the dog bit her. My girl isn't crying or anything, but I look at her leg. There's a ring of teeth marks, but no blood. Mom runs out, apologizes, says something about shots are up to date. Some man comes out seems really irritated by the whole thing. Not mad exactly, just annoyed. The woman says she just ran in to pee. Wasn't gone 5 minutes. We're like staring at each other. She kind of look like she partakes of meth, but maybe she's tired and thin. I don't know. I tell her we're going to leave as it's evident neither of us is going to take charge of this situation. Girl wants to go see grandma. We start heading over. I pick her up and carry her for awhile. She rides again. I brush something off my pants from the corner of my eye then actually look...BLOOD. I take a better look at her leg. It's just oozing blood. There's a puncture wound. There's a teeth marked bruise starting to take form. My mom makes us go to the hospital. Get lectured about not immediately cleaning wound. No stitches. Traps in bacteria apparently. 10 days Augmenten. This is on top of 10 ten days of some other antibiotic that finished about a week prior. All these antibiotics led to a HORRIBLE yeast rash on my girl's "area". ANYWAY, this loose dog caused us a lot of problems and my girl more pain than the bite. Her rash had her crying. Not to mention the emotional trauma - she regressed to the point that she was trying to breastfeed and get diapered. Seriously. Was fine after a week, but that wasn't fun. AND I DON'T BLAME THE DOG. The owners should have had it properly restrained and properly trained. If it ever gets put down or chews off one of their own kids' faces it will be on them. I didn't report it BTW, I didn't think the bite was that serious, the nurse at the hospital filed the report. So then I had to talk to cops when we got home and identify the dog as it was put on a 10-day hold due to it's shots being expired. So on top of all the problems with my girl, they probably really upset their own children with their negligence.
I have seen a Great Dane give a chile a new face and that never made the news. I have meet all breeds being an ACO that have torn people up and the only ones that made any news was a pit. There is a case of a Pomeranian that killed a child that made news. We need to educate people more including none dog owners, I have seen bad things happen because of the person reacted in a way that caused the dog bite in fear. I could go on for a long time, but yes it is mostly the people and people who don't teach thier childern how to treat/act around animals.
Personally, I don't believe that animals are born mean. I believe that it's up to the owner to train their animal to behave around people as well as other animals. I also firmly believe that if an animal is trained to be an attack dog that the owner be responcible for any harm which is done by the animal. I had a gorgeous Border Collie once, black, tan and white, that would let anyone come into my house but if you were to take something and I was not there, he stood fast at the doors and would not let that individual leave, friend or foe. Now that's a helluva dog there. Sure wish he was still alive.
