garza-irene-1A former priest suspected of killing a Texas second-grade teacher in 1960 has been arrested in Scottsdale and officially charged with murder.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department’s Criminal Apprehension and Surveillance Team, coordinating with two Texas agencies, the Texas Rangers and the Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office, detained John Feit outside his apartment in Scottsdale.

He has been jailed in Arizona pending extradition to Texas, according to an MCSO spokesman.


When Gloria Hampton walked into Charles McCully’s office in the summer of 2010 with a story stranger than fiction, the sergeant was suspicious. “I saw my father kill my mother when I was 4 years old,” she said. “He put her body into an army-green bag.” McCully was still skeptical. But after Gloria left, he cracked open musty boxes of cold-case files. He flipped through yellowing photographs and police reports for hours before pulling out a thin binder that hadn’t been touched in years. It was the unsolved murder from April 4, 1985. At first, the murder-suicide last month in the Florida Keys seemed like a typically tragic end-of-life drama: An 80-year-old man killed his ailing wife, his cat and then himself. But long lives that end violently have a strange way of unearthing old secrets.
