He didn’t want to go to sleep, because sleep meant nightmares, and nightmares meant reliving a rape.

Courtney Richardson, incarcerated in the Harris County Jail on charges of vehicular manslaughter, thought he was going crazy, and in many ways, he was. His eyes were so red from lack of sleep that it looked like he had been on drugs. He told the jail’s mental health staff he had been tempted with thoughts of suicide — the nightmares would stop then — and so he was placed in solitary confinement for more than a month, stripped of his clothes and given only a protective suicide blanket. He hated it there but, still, was fearful of leaving his cell, scared he would run into the guard he says sexually assaulted him on March 7.

UPDATE at 11:08 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2016: A suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with the crime spree. See details at the bottom. First posted at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, July 17, 2016.

City and county officials this week put up a $35,000 reward for information leading to the capture and conviction of a suspect they believe has been targeting women in a string of sexual attacks in Hollywood, East Hollywood and Echo Park.

Police say that on Aug. 1, the man entered a woman’s unlocked apartment in the 800 block of North Mariposa Street in East Hollywood at 12:20 p.m. He grabbed the woman before fleeing at the sound of her screams.

A suspect was arrested in a string of Westside rapes and assaults, including a July 2 attack that shocked a West L.A. neighborhood, according to police.

Pablo Carlos Pineda, 32, was arrested about 5:15 p.m. yesterday in L.A.’s Westlake district, the Santa Monica Police Department announced this afternoon.

A task force that included the FBI, the Los Angeles Police Department, Santa Monica Police Department and the Beverly Hills Police Department has linked Pineda to the crimes via forensic evidence and other “information,” according to the Santa Monica department.

But after making the busts, the cops realized there was a much larger operation at play — and the crimes committed in the name of meth were frequently horrifying. Westword has the story.
