Jeffrey Jason Cooper lured Asian college students to Florida for the summer with the opportunity of doing clerical work for his Miami Beach yoga studio. When they arrived, the students were informed that no such yoga studio existed. Instead, Cooper ran an erotic massage parlor and forced the students into performing sex acts for money instead.
Those are the claims made in an indictment handed down this morning from the Southern District of Florida U.S. Attorney’s Office. Cooper faces 11 charges related to the sex-trafficking scheme.

Lonnie Franklin Jr., accused of killing 10 women and attempting to murder one more, was convicted of the crimes by a Los Angeles jury today.
A woman identified as Juror No. 2 read off the verdicts in Los Angeles Superior Court Department 109 today. Nine of the counts against Franklin included firearms enhancements, which likely will affect sentencing. All but one of the counts was for first-degree murder.
At the end of a semester-long study-abroad program in Genoa, Italy, in December 2014, a group of architecture students from Florida International University went out for a celebratory dinner. After the meal, many students and a handful of faculty members grabbed drinks at a local bar. At 2 a.m., three of the students were ready to leave.
According to one of those students, Adam Drisin, then FIU’s senior associate dean of architecture, asked if the students could walk him back to his apartment. Inside, Drisin offered the students some Baileys liqueur, which they all drank.
They have handcuffs, guns and badges, and they’re around children a lot, so you’d hope that Los Angeles Unified School District Police are upstanding.
In one recent case, a district officer was anything but, federal prosecutors allege.
A United Airlines pilot has been accused of running brothels in a half dozen office or apartment buildings across Houston. Fifty-one-year-old Bruce Wayne Willis is charged with aggravated promotion of prostitution and engaging in organized crime. Prosecutors said during his probable cause hearing that Willis charged women $400 a week to solicit sex through his operation using online advertisements. About six to ten women were at each makeshift brothel, according to prosecutors.

On June 1, 2012, when she returned to the shelter after her eighth escape, a staffer offered to help her run away once more. Instead — the girl and her family now say — that employee sold the teen into a sex-trafficking ring, where she was forced into prostitution for 41 days, held against her will by captors who threatened to kill her, and eventually contracted a sexually transmitted disease.
