CNN is reporting that a guard struck by gunfire today at the Holocaust Museum has died. His name was Stephen Tyrone Johns.

The following is from the Washington Post: "A security guard and two other people were shot today inside the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in downtown Washington, authorities said." Live reports on cable news indicate a sudden attack that drew an immediate response from museum security guards.
One witness interviewed on CNN described a guard shot in the back and bleeding on the floor. US Park Police Public Information Officer David Schlosser said in a press conference that a man entered the museum armed with a "long gun" around 10 minutes till 1. A security guard confronted the man and the armed man opened fire. Two other security guards returned fire. Both the guard and gunman are in the hospital, their conditions are unknown at this time.
The London Times has reported that the shooter was 89-year-old avowed white supremacist James W. Von Brunn. Von Brunn had connections to anti-government and hate groups and wrote quite a bit. Some work authored by Von Brunn about the "Jew Conspiracy to destroy the white gene pool" can be found at HolyWesternEmpire.org. From the beginning of Von Brunn's book promoted on that site, just a sample of his brand of hate:

Von Brunn was quite the Internet Troll, on the whole. Using the e-mail address vonbrunn@goeaston.net, he went after many targets, not just Jews alone. Google, for instance. Someone helpfully recorded some of Von Brunn's thoughts about the evils of Google at - where else? - Stormfront.org:

This wasn't the first time Von Brunn went to DC to make some sort of statement through any means necessary. In 1981, the then-61-year-old Von Brunn was convicted in the District of Columbia Superior Court of attempting to kidnap members of the Federal Reserve.
We're moving into a dreadful new phase of American history - when the hate-filled lone wolves all begin charging out of the woodwork to make their own blood-soaked statements.

The Village Voice has raised some questions about FBI Agent Robert Fuller, who is front and center in the investigation into four black muslims arrested yesterday in New York, charged with planning attacks on some New York synagogues. From the Voice's "Runnin' Scared," a post by Graham Rayman: "Special Agent Robert Fuller, whose name appears at the top of the federal criminal complaint in the case, had a hand in the FBI's failure to nab two of the 9/11 hijackers, had one of his informants set himself on fire in front of the White House, and was involved in misidentifying a Canadian man as a terrorist leading to his secret arrest and torture -- a case that is now the subject of a major lawsuit..." Rayman goes onto explore Fuller's experience with apprehending terrorists since 9/11, and the end result is this - you start wondering if this newest development in the War on Terror is as dramatic as it seems.
Let's all congratulate The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on catching up with True Crime Report. I broke the news of Poplawski's association with Stormfront.org in this post yesterday. This is from the Post-Gazette's article published today:
[Poplawski's] online profile suggests someone at once lonely and seething. He wrote of burning the backs of both of his hands, the first time with a cigarette, the second time for symmetry. He subscribed to conspiracy theories and, by January 2007, was posting photographs of his tattoos on white supremacist Web site Stormfront. Among his ambitions: "to accumulate enough 'I punched that [expletive] so hard' stories to match my old man."
I haven't checked to see if the Post-Gazette's IP shows up in this blog's stats, but then again, everyone knows how to use Google now, or should. Either way, you heard it here, first.

Richard Poplawski's buddy Eddie Perkovic told the press that his friend feared that President Obama would ban guns. Perkovic seemed to think this had some bearing on the crime for which Poplawski stands accused: the shooting deaths of Pittsburgh, PA police officers Eric Kelly, Stephen Mayhle and Paul Sciullo III.
According to the Associated Press, Poplawski was wearing a bulletproof vest and 'laying in wait' for the cops early Saturday when law enforcement responded to a domestic disturbance call at the residence Poplawski shared with his parents. Between SWAT teams who responded to the standoff that ensued after the initial gun battle and the shooter himself, more than 100 rounds were fired, overall. Poplawski suffered non-fatal injuries to his extremities.
Eddie Perkovic was interviewed after the tragedy, and he said that his friend feared "the Obama gun ban" that he felt was "on its way." Poplawski also "didn't like our rights being infringed upon."
I checked out Perkovic's MySpace profile (won't link because a: it's easy to find and b: he might make it private, anyway) and found that he had a friend with this profile:
Apparently, Richard Poplawski. Folks elsewhere online have photos from that page, but it was private by the time I found it. I did find Poplawski's Stumbleupon account. Stumbleupon is mainly for bookmarking interesting web pages, and Poplawski's account may be worth a close look just to get some idea of what he liked.
When I searched the full URL of Poplawski's apparent MySpace profile, though, I happened onto a thread at StormFront.org. It is a message board for folks who believe in "White Pride World Wide." Someone using the screen name "Braced For Fate" wrote the following:

Google's cache of the StormFront thread, made in late February of this year, showed that at that time, "Braced For Fate's" screen name was "RichP."
Eddie Perkovic, for his part, clearly must share some of Poplawski's views, as his profile revealed a fear of "Zionists" and some kind of ethnic takeover of America. Among Perkovic's recommended reads were "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" and The Turner Diaries.
The longer I do this crime blogging thing, the more I try to shy away both from editorializing and from fear-mongering. But I can't help but feel we'll hear from more Richard Poplawskis in the years to come. There are changes happening in the world that they, to say the least, don't like very much. After all, prior to 9/11/01, the worst modern act of terrorism committed on American soil was committed by Americans. And one of those Americans, Tim McVeigh, happened to have pages from The Turner Diaries with him when he was arrested.
I'm just saying: while we were searching for the key to eliminating Al Qaeda, guys like Richard Poplawski didn't go anywhere. Hell, they may have even multiplied. Just remember that.
An early, comprehensive news report from WMC Television in Memphis about the explosion that critically injured Dr. Trent P. Pierce. When this was broadcast, police still thought the explosion might be accidental.
At first, it looked like an accident. Perhaps Dr. Trent P. Pierce's hybrid Lexus had some sort of fault or malfunction. Perhaps that malfunction caused the vehicle to explode around 8 a.m. CST on Wednesday, critically injuring the well-liked physician. As the day progressed, however, it became clear that that the Chairman of the Arkansas State Medical Board was the victim of foul play. Someone planted a bomb in Trent Pierce's car.
Several hours after Pierce was airlifted to a Memphis hospital for emergency surgery, investigators say they found the remains of an explosive device close to the front of Pierce's Lexus.
West Memphis Police Chief Bob Paudert didn't mince words when he spoke to the press about the explosion that nearly killed the man who was also his own personal physician: "It was a terrorist attack on Dr. Pierce."
Dr. Pierce was a family practitioner and his specialty was asthma. A survey of news stories about this morning's bomb attack as well as articles found in newspaper databases revealed nothing controversial. Only an Arkansas Supreme Court decision published January 22 this year [PDF] even hinted at any problems for Dr. Pierce. Fox News reported on the case:
The lawsuit was brought by the estate of a deceased woman, Norma Louise Ramsey, against Pierce, a senior citizens' medical facility company called Golden Living -- formerly known as Beverly Enterprises -- the Memphis Dermatology Clinic and other defendants.
Ramsey was 92 years old when she died in July 2004, according to her obituary in The Arkansas Democrat Gazette. There was no cause of death given.
In 2005, the state of Arkansas paid $1.5 million to settle 26 lawsuits brought against Beverly Enterprises. The suits stemmed from allegations of mistreatment and neglect of residents at 12 of its nursing homes.
It wasn't immediately clear whether the lawsuit naming Pierce as a co-defendant with Beverly Enterprises was among the 26 abuse cases. His medical license is listed as active.
The January 22 decision agreed with Dr. Pierce's motion to dismiss the Ramsey Estate's appeal in the case.
Was Trent P. Pierce targeted for reasons that just haven't been made public yet?
Or was he the victim of a random bomber?
The second question will determine how much more you hear about this case. If the answer to the latter question is yes, Chief Bob Paudert's declaration about a "terrorist attack" won't seem like so much hyperbole, anymore.

The FBI showed up today at 170 Gore St. in Cambridge, MA. They were there to search the home of James and LeAnn Lewis.
He has faded from the public eye, but if you were following the 1982 Tylenol poisonings that took place in and around the Chicago area, you probably heard about James Lewis. He went to jail for several years for an extortion plot directly linked to the mysterious poisonings. Lewis was also the main suspect in the murders. It appears as though that's never really changed...

Police in Oregon have apprehended 57-year-old Bruce Turnidge. He is the father of former Navy Serviceman Joshua Turnidge, who is currently facing multiple counts connected to the deadly Friday, December 12 bombing of a bank in Woodburn, OR. The elder Turnidge was arrested not far from Jefferson, OR and charged with conspiracy to manufacture an explosive device. He has also been charged with conspiracy to possess an explosive device.
Court documents have also explained why the explosive device that took the life of State Trooper William Hakim and police Capt. Tom Tennant was inside the bank when it went off.
Simply put, the cops thought they were dealing with a hoax. They'd examined the green metal box as it sat outside the bank and William Hakim apparently felt confident that it was a fake. Tom Tennant was holding the box and Hakim was attempting to open it when it exploded.
As for primary suspect Joshua Turnidge, he was apparently tracked in part through tell-tale purchases he made at a Wal-Mart in Bend, Oregon. Turnidge was directly fingered, however, because a Wal-Mart security video caught him leaving the store and taking off in a blue 80s model pickup registered to his father, Bruce.
Joshua Turnidge made his first court appearance today. He is due back in court again the day after Christmas. As is too often the case, his neighbors seem utterly shocked by the whole thing.
Prosecutors have yet to reveal a motive in the case, but several media reports indicate banks were being targeted. So there's that. In these straitened times, it's surprising this kind of thing has only happened once, so far. [KPTV.com]
Oregon authorities say they've arrested a suspect in the bombing of a Woodburn, OR bank on Friday. The alleged bomber is 32-year-old Joshua Abraham Turnidge, of Bend, OR. Per KATU.com, the charges against Turnidge are:
* Manufacturing and possessing a destructive device * First- and second-degree assault * Conspiracy to commit aggravated murder * Two counts of attempted aggravated murder * Six counts of aggravated murder
Turnidge was arrested shortly after Marion County Sheriff Russ Isham released suspect photos culled from bank security footage on Sunday. Police say Turnidge was not apprehended as a result of tips from the public.
Two police officers were killed in the blast on Friday and another officer was severely injured. The victims are: Capt. Tom Tennant of the Woodburn PD; William Hakim, an Oregon State Trooper; and Woodburn Police Chief Scott Russell, who remains in critical condition.
Police are keeping details of how they tracked the suspect close to the vest. Turnidge's motives remain elusive as well. Suffice it to say, though -- bomb-making is something that requires a bit of planning and forethought.
Turnidge had a low profile online. At least it seems that way, so far. I was able to find evidence that he'd been an active paintballer in the past, and he had a denuded MySpace account under the screen name, "pink503." Turnidge's last login was November 24 of this year and he had only 2 friends as of Monday night -- one of them MySpace's ubiquitous "Tom."

A suspect was arrested on Sunday in connection with the bombing at a Woodburn, Oregon bank on Friday. Two police officers were killed in the blast and another as critically injured. Marion County Sheriff Russ Isham told the media that the arrest was "the result of an intensive round-the-clock investigation" by local, state and federal agencies. The suspect, who has not been named, was arrested near Salem, Oregon. [CNN.com]

Sometimes you spot a crime story and you just have to watch it, even though few details are available. This is one of those times.
A police officer was seriously injured inside a Woodburn, Oregon bank Friday night. He was on the scene investigating a suspicious device found outside the bank. The device had been taken inside the West Coast Bank on Newberg Highway after it was found in the parking lot outside. According to CNN, two bank employees also suffered injuries and trauma as a result of the blast.
Three law enforcement entities were actually involved in the investigation when the bomb went off -- the Woodburn PD, Oregon State Police and the FBI. It's probably no coincidence that a bomb threat had been called in earlier on Friday against the Wells Fargo branch located just a few yards from the West Coast Bank. Police checked that threat out around 10:30 in the morning and found nothing.
Bombers are serious business -- like I said, this may be a story to watch, unless the police can trace the bomb maker quickly. [CNN.com]
